Shadows of Heaven fanfic I may never write: The Obsidian Cascades is a band built around their dark-fantasy-meets-glam-metal aesthetic and the unclear lore around all of the bands' "characters", since the actual members maintain anonymity through costume and controlled appearance. Carys is a photographer who struggled to make ends meet so he often takes up work as a paparazzi despite hating how intrusive it is. His luck turns-- though for better or worse is to be determined-- after he gets a beautiful shot of the band at a show he snuck into and is contacted to become their official photographer by the band's lead member himself, "the Dark Prince".

I feel like Carys is unreasonably good at some niche sport that he and Ilyian really liked from before the war. And then when he’s human, Carys sees the first company playing it as a form of cross training while on their travels, maybe when they’re traveling to the altar after the baron/dawn episodes. Carys, beloved by the guards at that point, asks to join in for some reason. They let him on the (unspoken) rule that they would all go light on him, and Samiel stands by, ready to intervene and brutally murder reprimand the guards if they go too hard on him. Except Carys is like unreasonably amazing at the sport and beats the first company without any additional training. They’re all amazed and he’s brushing it off like it’s nothing, and when Samiel asks him how he knew that, he’s like “oh idk it was just instinct 😇😇😇😇”

Cue the bleak guard trying all kinds of different sports with Carys to see what else he’s secretly good at, except he’s absolutely miserable at everything else

I think Carys has a secret collection of cheesy romance novels that he makes Maive buy for him so that no one suspects anything. And then Samiel totally found out and has been quoting the worst lines from them to see if Carys notices, except in order to find those lines he had to read the novels and unfortunately got hooked on the genre. So he also has a super secret stash that he makes Jinhuo collect for him from discreet locations
