Alright, I'm finally done watching mlp Make your mark and some episode of Tell Your Tale. I'm still watching 'Tell Your Tale,' but it's going to be a while. After all, that show has 94 episodes. I can only take so much.
So , I'm going to break down in three sections. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I will only talk about the movie and Make Your Mark. Tell Your Tale may not get a review from me and that including the comics that I recently discovered (Although, I may use some for comparison). I'm doing this review/ rants just to express some frustrations. With that say, Let's Begin....
So, the movie, Mlp Next Gen. Not bad at all, it set up a Foundation for the show itself and established being Continuity from Mlp gen 4. Some of the music I did enjoy, particularly my favorite is 'Fit Right in' and 'Danger, Danger'. The New Mane 5 is also nice. Especially Hitch, the colt is skeptical at first but turn around at the end. Izzy Moonbow became my favorite throughout the movie. She lil bit like pinkie pie but so much more grounded which I appreciate. The Pegasus sister was also nice too, with me loving pip's design and her being the shortest of the bunch. I also love the antagonist, Sprout at first start as comedy relief character and coward that now turn to a villain. With that say, the movie story was straightforward and was enjoyable. Now Next, the series "Make your Mark".
Make your Mark is interesting to say the least, I did enjoy some of the episodes and the lesson. I like the new addition characters to Mane 5, which is Misty. She really well develops in my eye, and I enjoy her every time she appears on the series. Some of the chapters in the series is really fun, particularly my favorite is chapter 4, just cause the beautiful colors and everyone dressing up for that Bridlewood party. I also like some of the music in the show such as Starshine Time, and Portrait Day. I also can appreciate that they try to keep going from the movie and build up more lore in some way and like some characters development. Especially how some the characters interact like Misty and Zip.
I think that's how far I can speak on What's good in Make your Mark.
"Make your Mark" is a series that I believe have so much potential but fail at every corner due to many facts that play a part of being a failure. First off, if a series is meant to be a continuity, commit to be a continuity. The series barley touch on the gen 4, with only making a few easter eggs ref or sometime mention Twilight which barely few and in between. Or when the plot need bring up Twilight. (kudos to Zip for being the only one to investigate and try to connect what Twilight was trying to do.)
The series also fail to use the foundation from the movies. I mean they never explore more from just being scene or using to make new events or never expanding on preexisting lore that was established in Mlp 4. More like breaking lore to fit their new story, actually.
Just the Same three locations, and if you want to argue with me about the Bridlewood's Night Market being a new location go right ahead or the fact the new dragon isle (dragon land by the way) was introduce, that's fine. Honestly though, dragon land barely gets explore and Night Market is still set in Bridlewood. Other than that, you can't convince me otherwise.
This Serie have so much potential, but I feel like it was wasted especially since Hasbro try so hard to make mlp gen 5 connected to gen 4 which by the way, can be really good if execute properly. The problem is when the writers doesn't do research or even watch the past show to understand the lore. Which end up becoming a confusing mess with inconsistency, plot holes, and established lore getting destroy and just more questions all together.
Prime example of Plot hole is...
1. Opaline was a Fire Alicorn since a small child, but Spike say she became Fire Alicorn due to taking the Dragon's Fire magic
2. Misty pulling pages from a book that Zip was looking into but never came back up. In fact, it was completely forgotten.
3. Misty saying she wasn't going to work with Opaline again but proceed to work with her and Steal Sparky. (Although, she may have changed her mind...but she seems very firm when she spoke about this. So, I'll take this part on me and my thinking.)
There is a lot more, but these are the most obvious ones.
Now for the inconsistencies, biggest Elephant in the Room, the dragons and Spike. Oh yes... Spike. What did they do to him?
Spike is Four-legged dragon and have the deepest voice I have ever heard, 1st being Flutterguy. He also is dragon lord, granted, he did earn it fair and Square but it was pass onto Ember. So what happen to her? You see what I'm talking about? Getting More Question than Answer.
And for some strange reason, dragon now have cutie mark too. Oh, I also forgot to mention that my little pony g5, only have one side cutie mark instead of both sides. (I figure I just let that be know, and add that to the inconsistency)
I will never understand why turn all dragons to all four and give them cutie mark. If this Hasbro's way to make them marketable, they could had still done it even without doing this.
Who that's Ugly or What's that Ugly? Well...It's the Villain. Let me explain, Opaline is the villain of Make your Mark. When she first appeared.... I was not impressed. I say this because she really doesn't do much until later down the chapter and not much of a threat until then. Every plan up until chapter 6, been failing her and not to mention, she is completely oblivious to a lot of stuff.
This is the same Alicorn that somehow manage to unravel Twilight's hard work despite all the safety net. I'm sorry but how? Especially without a team?...How could she take down a season Alicorn like Twilight that has been ruler of Equestria? I'm sorry, I just don't believe that. I would had believe if she had a group of her own that assist or join up with other ponies that were like Cozy Glow but Nah. She took it like a champ.
I also have a beef with Opaline's. design. It might just be me, but the color scheme of her come off way too strong or just doesn't fit for her. I have nothing wrong with Villain having a dark color scheme. Nightmare moon was done nicely! but for her. It's not. That strong Magenta isn't working for her and cyan highlight within the white hair is not helping at all. In their attempt to contrast the color, it just comes off too strong and not right. I would have preferred they play with the color scheme with her name. "Opaline" which no doubt is connect to be Opal, (at least that what I'm thinking... >.>) But other than that, Opaline is the most underwhelming villain ever.
I will admit, she does have some of her shining moments. In chapter 6, her plan was actually working, and she was getting more powerful. She does show cruelty towards sparky the dragon. As she plans to drop the dragon in the ocean once she was done with absorbing their magic and just being very mean to Misty. I love all those interactions. So that was solid.
So, I thinks that's it, I could talk more about it, but I think the post is long enough and I believe I spoke what problems and frustrations I had. As I say before, Gen 5 could have done good without connected to Gen 4, since that's whole entire reason why I was frustrated. Hasbro did a oopsie...
anyway, thanks for reading this. Now back to other stuff.
