over the course of the subsequent weeks, though, what felt peaceful quickly turned unsettling, and it felt eerily quiet in her life all of a sudden. she noticed that a lack of distraction in her life had become more disruptive than its presence. she felt lonely, and found herself missing being flirted with and teased. she realized she hadnāt spoken so much as a couple sentences to james, and he felt distant and indifferent ā something james had never been to lily in all the time heād known her. it had gotten so bad and so bothersome for lily that she lost focus in class more often than not, catching her eyes wandering to james during lectures. usually, heād have bent over backwards to catch a glimpse of her gaze and give her that big, toothy potter grin she had grown accustomed to seeing. now, all that was left was accidental eye contact and a tight-lipped smile that left lily wanting more, silently wishing she could go back to being the subject of his attention again.
sheād walked through the common room one evening occupied only by james working on his history of magic essay on the couch. his textbook lay on one thigh, and he scribbled lazily onto his parchment on his right. the late night fire provided enough light and warmth to fill the space he occupied, but the rest of the room was dark.
before she even realized what she was doing, her body had betrayed her, and she felt her legs begin to carry her across the room and in between james and the fire.
āwhere have you been?ā the words spilled out before she could stop herself.
james didnāt look up. āiāve been right here, lils.ā
lily felt the impatience grow inside of her. āyou havenāt spoken to me at all in weeks.ā
his eyes remained trained on his assignment, his gaze shifting between the parchment and his book. āyouāre always telling me how much youād wish iād fuck off. well, here it is. this is me fucking off. i thought youād be delighted.ā
āwell, iām not.ā again, she spoke before she could think, and instantly went wide-eyed in shock.
finally, james looked up, pushing his glasses over the bridge of his nose. āyouāre not?ā
completely embarrassed, lily tried to wake her senses up and made an effort to turn on her heels and run to her dorm, but james was faster. he grabbed her hand, making every hair on her body stand up, and stopped her dead in her tracks. he pushed his work off his lap and stood up to face her. there was no going back now, thought lily, and she slowly began to turn around to meet his eyes.
her gaze dragged up his body, starting at his hands. one was still wrapped around her wrist, the other dangling at his side, his silver ringās reflection winking up at lily in the firelight. her eyes travelled further up his figure, his crisp button-up now worn from being under his robes all day, seeing his tie loosened for the first time in years. the glass of his spectacles was crystal clear, allowing lily to see right through to his eyes, suddenly ignited with hope heād thought heād lost weeks ago.
ān-nothing.ā now hyperaware of their closeness, lilyās mind fogged. she could feel everything all at once, and it was too much for her.
ātell me, lily.ā his words were soft, but his eyes were pleading. he was afraid to let go, afraid that if he did, sheād run away. he tried not to squeeze her wrist, but his grip was firm.
lily was overcome with a wave of heat. maybe at his touch, maybe at his gaze, maybe from the fire a few feet away. maybe from the realization she might love the boy sheās pushed away for years.
āiā¦i miss you. i feel empty without you.ā
those words were all james needed to lay his worries to rest. he anxiously closed the gap between them in a kiss inconsistent with everything lily thought james potter stood for. the kiss was gentle, sweet, intimate, patient. like heād been waiting for so long to taste her lips, and this moment satisfied the hunger heād stomached all this time for her love. he placed his hands on her waist, his strong arms handling her like glass, and her arms snaked around his neck to pull him closer.

the prank had elicited an extremely emotional response from lily. she was enraged that james and the boys put severus and remus in the danger they did. she hadnāt gone to see james the morning after that full moon and instead opted to visit severus in the hospital wing. she had genuinely wanted to make sure he was alright, but upon seeing her, severusās gaze hardened and turned cold. heād called her a traitor, a liar, a backstabber ā every horrible name he could think of, he threw her way. she knew thereād be a rift in their friendship the moment she pursued james, but she had never expected their relationship to turn so venomous.
james had come down to the hospital wing that morning to pick up remus after the full moon, like he always did. he saw madam pomfrey on her way out, healing potions in hand, and obeyed when she requested a few moments to get remus awake and on his feet again. heād aimlessly stared at the walls, restless from the prior night, when he heard shouting coming from inside the infirmary. he recognized the voice as snapeās, anger beginning to stir inside of him, and nosily peered into the room, when he caught sight of the fiery hair he knew belonged to lily.
confused, he walked further into the room, and noticed lilyās head was in her hands and her shoulders shook from small sobs. without registering all the nasty things snape spat at her, james ran to lily and pulled her into his chest, shielding him from a bed-ridden snape, only hearing one word from his mouth before pulling her out of the wing: mudblood.
even though her anger with james persisted still, she couldnāt help but crawl back to him in her time of need. she grieved the first friendship she had in the wizarding world, she grieved the part of her childhood severus had taken that she would never get back, she grieved the redemption she hoped he may have had in her life. now, she felt as if her relationship with severus was a lie.
james vowed never to let him hurt lily ever again.
