Williamâs eyes filled with tears of relief. Yew wasnât upset with him. It made William very happy. âItâs alright, I understand. I will try to be better.â he promised. He really cared for Yew and wanted them to be close. He never meant to hurt him in any way, neither physical or emotional, and he was very serious about that. He wanted to protect Yew, even from himself.
When Yew crawled into the bed with him, William scooted over to make some space for him, and pulled the covers over them both. He hugged the nurse back, holding him in a gentle embrace. His face nuzzled into Yewâs hair, he closed his eyes and inhaled his scent. It was soothing and relaxing. âI do want to be gentle with you. Never want to hurt you. I want to protect you, and give you affection.â William murmured softly. âI like this feeling⌠being with you makes me feel good and safe. And I want to make you feel the same.âÂ
In the following months, William was working really hard. He was diligently attending therapy, taking his meds. He tried to eat properly to be healthy too. He worked so hard to show Yew, and everyone, that he can get better. He even started to believe it himself.
He mostly kept to himself, but was friendly with a few patients. Ringabel mostly. They werenât letting Tiz out at all, even though he was hearing rumours that he was getting better too. But if they werenât letting him out, sometimes William suspected theyâre just saying so to keep him calmer.
Autumn came then, Williamâs favourite season. When Yew came to wake him up this morning, William sat up on the bed, rubbing his eyes with the sleeve of his pyjama. âIs it nice outside?â he mumbled sleepily. âYea, I want to go out. Through my window, I can see that there are chestnut trees growing on the hospital grounds. I want to go look for chestnutsâŚâ
{âŁ} âItâs beautiful out there. Itâs a bit chilly though. Youâll probably have to wear a coat and scarf.â It wasnât quite freezing, but it was definitely cold enough to wear a sweater and gloves. âWeâll go look for chestnuts then. And what do you want to do after? Do you want to take a nice, hot bubble bath? You are moving into your new room today after all.â They decided it was time to upgrade his surroundings a bit. Heâs been doing so well that they decided it was time to take the next step in reintroducing him to society and being more independent. His new room would be more like a small studio apartment with his own personal bathroom.
Yew set down Williamâs breakfast on a tray in front of him and he poured him a cup of hot coffee. âBig things are happening today. Are you excited?â
William got excited already. Yes, he loved autumn. He wanted to go look for chestnuts with Yew. Outside of the hospita building⌠it will maybe feel like a little date. A little⌠normal.
âMhm, bubble bath sounds great. I would like that very much.â he agreed, taking a sip of coffee. It was so nice and warm. He smiled immediately. He started eating, looking up at Yew happily. âIâm excited for the new room. It will be nicer than here.â he hummed, sitting cross-legged on his bed. He had good appetite, so he finished his breakfast quickly.
âAnd what after bathâŚ? Do I have therapy today?â
{âŁ} It made Yew feel so happy, knowing that William was not only doing better, but feeling better. âYou donât have therapy today. Youâre more or less free to do anything you like. Did you want to hang out with Ringabel today?â He was sure Ringabel would love to spend some time with him. They always got along so well. And who knows? Maybe he could help William make more friends too.
âIâve got your clothes all ready for you. Did you want me to assist you? Or would you prefer if I gave you a little more privacy?â He asked, setting the clean and neatly folded clothing down on the end of the bed.
âHmm⌠yea, I may go hang out with Ringabel. He said we could paint together. I would like that.â William decided after a moment of thought. He sipped his coffee, enjoying how nice and hot it was. âNo, donât goâŚâ he said quickly, almost like a little kid would. He just always felt more secure when Yew was with him.
He crawled out of the bed, and started taking off his pyjama, changing into the clothes Yew brought for him. Soft fabrics. Everything felt so nice today. âAnd laterâŚâ William spoke, pulling on a nice soft cardigan. âIn the evening⌠can you stay for a bit and cuddle me in my new bed in new room?â he asked hopefully.
{âŁ} Yew remained in the room, taking a seat on the bed while William dressed himself. He didnât mind sticking around in the afternoon either. Maybe he could stick around after heâs clocked out for the day?
âOf course!â Yew replied cheerfully. I donât mind staying a little longer. Iâve got nothing to go home to anyway.â He was actually much happier staying with William. He wished he could spend the night. âAnd Iâll bring some tea for us later too. To keep us warm.â
He wrapped his scarf around his neck, standing up and taking William by the hand. âReady to go?â
William smiled at this perspective. A nice evening with Yew and nice hot tea. This sounded perfect. A little bit of normal in his life was always much cherished by him.Â
Once he was dressed, he happily took Yewâs hand, and was eager to go out. âYes, Iâm ready! Letâs go!â Finally some time outsideâŚ
As they left the hospital building, William already felt a little better. The fresh air, the smell of grass, and rain, since it was raining last night⌠everything seemed wonderful. He started walking further into the hospital grounds, towards where the chestnut trees were growing, closer to the fence in the back. âThis is so nice⌠I like autumn. What is your favourite season?â he asked Yew. He wanted to wrap his arm around his shoulders and walk like this, hugging, but they couldnât. Someone might see, and he didnât want Yew to get in trouble because of him.Â
{âŁ}       Yew sighed, breathing in the crisp autumn air. âHmmâŚthatâs a tough one. I do like fall. Itâs the season of cuddles, getting togetherâŚitâs got some of the best weather and holidays. But, I also like spring tooâŚâ He wished he could be closer. Maybe rest his head on his shoulderâŚbut he couldnât. Not out here. He had to remain content with just holding hands for now.
He glanced over at another tree and stopped. There were a few other patients in the yard this morning too, but they were all having fun in the leaves and throwing fistfuls of them at each other. However, there was one patient sitting quietly under a tree alone. He rested with his back against the trunk of the tree, and a walking staff at his side. He lookedâŚfamiliar? His faceâŚ
âDonât look now, William. But I think thatâs Tiz over by the other treeâŚâ
âMhm⌠I like spring too. But autumn the most.â William hummed, happily walking around, enjoying fresh air, and how the leaves were crunchy underneath his feet. It was such a lovely day, he had some time off from the therapy, was going to have new nice room, and got to spend time with Yew. It seemed that everything was perfect today.
Until Yew brought Williamâs attention to another patient sitting by the tree nearby. William literally froze, and couldnât turn to look even if he wanted to. âWhat?â his voice seemed strangled. âNo, no, letâs not go there. If he sees me he will get scared, I donât want toâŚâ he panicked a little, and literally just walked away into the opposite direction.
The image of Tiz from his dreams was still fresh in his mind, even though those dreams werenât haunting him for a while now.
He walked off, to be as far away from Tiz as he could. There was a big chestnut tree at the other edge of the hospital grounds, and William went over there, starting to pick green, spiky chestnut shells from the ground to distract himself.
{âŁ} Yew stayed close to William following him while also keeping an eye on Tiz to make sure they didnât spook him. Though, it seemed William was the one who had been spooked. He seemed nervous and antsy, wanting to stay as far away from Tiz as possible.
Tiz looked up from his book, glancing over at the two people nearby. He recognized Yew immediately, and thought it would be nice to say hello. The company of another was always welcome. He used his staff to help him off the ground, then he began making his way over to Yew.
Yew didnât panic, but he did alert William. âWillâŚTiz is coming this way. Act natural. I wonât let anything happen, okay?â
William just picked a chestnut shell from the ground, and began carefully opening it to take out the nice, shiny chestnut from inside. When Yew told him Tiz was coming towards them, William looked over, and got so anxious that he squeezed his hand too tight, and the spikes from the chestnut shell pierced his skin.
âKeep him away from me.â William spoke only, and turned around again. He was trembling, but tried not to act on edge. He needed to seem calm, and non-threatening. He hoped Tiz will just speak with Yew for a second and then go away again. Surely, Tiz wonât want to be around him for longer eitherâŚ
{âŁ} âWhat?â Yew was definitely surprised when he heard William tell him to keep Tiz away. âButâŚI thought youâd like to see him?â Of course it may not be the same feelings on Tizâs end. He thought maybe Tiz would go away or stay where he was if he saw William. Maybe he hadnât noticed William yet.
Tiz was getting closer, so Yew walked toward him to keep him at least a few feet away from William. âHello, Tiz. Beautiful morning isnât it?â Tiz smiled softly and nodded. âItâs lovely. The leaves changed colorsâŚautumn always reminds me of home.â He sighed, knowing those days were far behind him now. âWhoâs the new patient? Iâve never seen him out here before.â Yew swallowed. Oh God what the hell was he supposed to say?!
âNowâŚdonât panic. Itâs William.â
William? The same bastard that stalked him through Mount Massive? The same William that took advantage of him over and over again? At first, Tiz froze. Should he run? Should he beat William to death with his staff? NoâŚ.he had to calm down. Suddenly Tiz closed his eyes and started counting aloud.
He stopped at twenty, taking a deep breath. Surely if William was out in the gardens then he must not be a threat anymore right? At least, he hoped he wasnât. âMay IâŚsee him?â
William really didnât like this. He kept to himself, standing on the side, playing with the chestnut in his hands, but he still observed Yew and Tiz with the corner of his eye. And he didnât like one bit that it was taking so long. What were they talking about? Why wouldnât Tiz just walk away?
He cracked the spiky chestnut shell with his fingers gently, and took out the nice, round and shiny brown chestnut. He smiled a little as he saw it, and ran a finger over it smooth surface.
And then he overheard what Tiz said. He wanted to see him? William already knew this is not a good idea.
{âŁ} Yew stiffened a bit. âAreâŚare you sure, Sir?â Was Tiz really certain about wanting to see him? Wouldnât he panic? He had to be sure that both of them were ready, otherwise this meeting could be a disaster.
âGive me one second, okay? Iâll ask William if heâs okay with it.â He stepped away from Tiz and joined William at his side, gently touching his shoulder. âWilliamâŚI know you said you didnât want to see Tiz because you donât want to scare himâŚBut he seems calm now. Do you want to let him see you?â Tiz seemed harmless now. He was even tempered and level headed. Yew doubted things could go wrong between them. âIf not, I can send him awayâŚâ
William played with the chestnut, moving it between his fingers, staring down at it, how shiny and smooth it was. He was nervous, and wasnât sure if it was a good idea to see Tiz. But on the other hand⌠maybe he would get some kind of closure? Yew said that Tiz seemed calm, maybe⌠maybe if he will see that he is indeed feeling better, then the nightmares would stop too?
âFineâŚâ William said eventually, agreeing a little hesitantly. âBut you donât go away. Stay with me. I donât want to be aloneâŚâ he hummed, looking at Yew with begging eyes.Â
{âŁ} Yew waited for William to think things over for a moment. He could see he was a bit tense and nervous. He couldn't blame him, with all the nightmares he'd been having recently. He was certain the last thing William would ever want to do would be to hurt Tiz in some way. Once he agreed, Yew nodded. "I won't be going anywhere. I'll even hold your hand." He held William's hand, interlacing their fingers as he led William over to Tiz.
Tiz gazed up at the taller man with his one brown eye. His hair had been cut away, revealing his face. He nearly looked how he did in William's nightmares and visions, minus the blood. He even still had some of the old scars. Tiz almost immediately seemed to cower. It was as if William was towering over him. He had always found the other's height to be intimidating. Tiz quickly averted his gaze, unable to look up at him without recognizing him as that beast that hunted him down. "H-hi...I see you're out and about now..."
