you know looking back on my previous flings/relationships and just generally all the times i developed strong feelings for someone, every single time it ended i thought “i’ll never recover from this” and i did. every single time i did. and i know i’ll go through a bunch more of these experiences and i will feel hopeless for a bit and i will get back on my feet every single time. i am literally best of friends with my exes nowadays, people who i swore i would never let back into my life.

Now, see, this pisses me off.

Not everyone learns the same way.

When I was in nursing school, I didn’t take notes in class. You know what I did? I played endless games of pocket tetris. The chair of the nursing program approached me about it once, going so far as to say that she thought for a time that I must have copies of her tests, since I aced everything she tested us on, even though I never appeared to be paying attention.

Visual learners, auditory learners, hands-on learners - everyone’s heard of those types, sure. But that’s not all there is. There’s a 4th learning style that is actually best suited to splitting the focus between disparate activities to learn most effectively. For me, that was playing repetative games or doodling, coloring print outs of Sailor Moon characters or fiddling with small ‘fidget’ toys. An English Lit professor had identified this as my learning style a couple years earlier and lo and behold, I started learning better when I started catering to my actual learning style.

I was lucky; the chair of the nursing program knew about the learning style I exhibited and didn’t bother me again about the fact I sat in the back and played mindless games in her classes. The goal of class is to learn, right? What the fuck does it matter if the person learning does so via note taking or doodling or looking at puppies? To this day I most effectively form associations and recall memories of things I’ve listened to by doing something very different with my hands and eyes.

Don’t assume people are slacking off just because they’re not learning the way you expect them to be.

Had this very same problem throughout my entire time in school from elementary to college, where I’d get publicly reprimanded by a teacher for doodling during class. Some of them even threatened to dock me for ‘not doing what I was supposed to be doing’, ignore the fact that I was passing tests on a regular basis and for the most part understood the material better than most of the other people in my class.

I thankfully had some teachers that understood, and remember a particular instance in English class when there was another training teacher sitting in on a session and she came to my teacher at the end of the lecture to basically tattle on me about doodling the entire time. My teacher looked her right in the eye and told her “Oh, I know. That’s just how she learns.” I’m thankful for people who understand that kids learn in different ways, that a lot of times what kid you consider disruptive is not being necessarily disrespectful, or they aren’t “stupid.” They just process and absorb information differently.

I’m sympathetic to teachers who have to worry about broadly teaching a whole spectrum of students, and you can’t cater to everyone all the time, (and, another memory, some teachers don’t understand that you need to do these things to pay attention; I had my music professor approach me sheepishly about doodling in class, because he was hurt that I wasn’t listening to him, but after explaining to him that I was listening and that doodling was necessary for me to absorb information he accepted that as it was and left it alone). But jumping to punishment is unfair.

I spent too much time getting in trouble and thinking that I was a problem to people in my public school career and it didn’t take me until I was an adult to reason that my compulsion wasn’t a bad one. It really fucking sucks to be shamed in front of a class for trying to learn.

I had this issue with math. I basically accepted that I couldn’t do math for years. Geometry? I was so good at that my teacher had me mentoring other students. When I tearfully thanked her for helping me feel smart about it she was shocked. She was surprised I had issues with math because she said I was a natural at it. Her class was very laid back and didn’t have the clipped judgmental style that every other math class I had taken had had. I could ask questions and it was okay. I didn’t feel like I was taking up the teachers time. She never seemed to mind me drawing in the margins. One of my best science teachers was totally cool with me READING LOTR while taking notes. A laid back classroom environment is so useful. Playing to your students teaching styles is so helpful. When you stop seeing and treating your student as an adversary you get a lot further with them.
