@anannua mentioned a little post-injury amnesia as a story concept this week and these mini plot gremlins came along
----
She’s in the kitchen mixing up a dose of anti-inflammatory tea for Obito when she hears the commotion- rustling and hissed, hushed shouting and the distinct sound of someone’s limb colliding with the headboard.
“Did Obito wake up?” she calls warily, hearing the grunting and shuffling of two extremely guilty boyfriends trying their best to avoid her wrath.
“Yes!” Kakashi yells back, voice rather strained.
When she makes it back to the bedroom, hurrying down the hallway and using chakra to stabilize the cup just in case it spills, Rin can immediately see why. Obito is pressing Kakashi into the mattress, guarding his bandaged ribs and shivering slightly now that he’s out from under the many blankets they’d piled on top of the bed. His hands, trembling from sudden exertion, are wrapped tight around Kakashi’s shoulders, and his face is red with anger. Kakashi’s saying something quietly, as close to a “de-escalation” voice as he ever gets with their hotheaded partner, but she can’t quite make it out.
“Obito,” she scolds, setting the tea down on the bedside table carefully before climbing onto the bed to tug him off their boyfriend. “Obito, lie back. You’re going to hurt yourself even more, and I just finished putting in all those stitches.”
“Yeah, heel, boy,” Kakashi mutters sullenly, when Obito gives him another shove as he grudgingly obeys Rin’s sharp tone. He’s clearly embarrassed about something, from the faint pink cast to his ears to his grumpy expression. And Obito’s enraged, fuming silently at him despite the fact that he must have woken up bare minutes ago while she was waiting for the water to boil. He takes the cup of tea from her carefully, still, cowed by her single raised eyebrow and stern expression.
“Let me check you out now that you’re awake, and then you can tell me what all this nonsense is about,” Rin leans forward, rubbing her hand comfortingly along Obito’s still-too-cold arm. He startles at her touch, though, badly enough to spill a little liquid on his chin as he sips, and suddenly his anger’s melting into the tell-tale Uchiha Obito guilty face. Her immediate instinct is to frown, because she’d literally left them alone for twenty minutes. While they still bicker even now that they’re all in a relationship, the boys generally aren’t tight-lipped about their issues when it comes to her, eager to get her on their side of the argument. His eyes dart towards Kakashi briefly, then back to her, then down to his lap like he can’t even make eye contact with either of them.
“Well?” Obito snaps, voice heavy with guilt after a long minute of silence, while Rin’s glowing hands feel over his bruised leg and start encouraging the tissue to heal. “Are you going to tell her what you did?”
“Are you?” Kakashi asks, pointing one long finger at Obito before crossing his arms and flopping back on the bed. “You started it. All I did was kiss you, and you flipped out on me.”
“Because Rin’s right here! I know you’re a cocky bastard, but you’re gonna come on to me while your girlfriend’s like twenty feet away? And, what, expect me to keep it a secret? That’s fucked up, even for you-”
“Hold on,” Rin interrupts, pushing Obito’s flailing arms back down and coming right for his head, palms aglow. “Why would it be a secret, Obito?” she asks gently, feeling over his temporal bones and pressing in softly, probing with chakra to feel for the fluid surrounding his brain.
“You’re his girlfriend!” he blusters, looking at her with that sweet, confused face she fell in love with when they were children, trying to understand the situation and knowing somehow that he’s missing a vital piece of information. “He can’t just- just cheat on you like this!”
“Obito,” she says patiently, gently tugging at the jutsu now apparent over his hippocampus. “I’m also your girlfriend.”
“You thought I would cheat on Rin-” Kakashi starts, disgust and anger tinging his voice even though Rin can tell he knows something has gone wrong.
“What else am I supposed to think? I don’t remember you ever asking me out too-”
“That’s the problem,” Rin interjects. “You don’t remember, because there’s a jutsu here sealing your memories that we’re going to have to get a Yamanaka in on. Obito,” she cups his cheek gently, smiling down at their sweet, defensive boyfriend. “It’s okay. I promise that we asked you out months ago, and Kakashi wasn’t trying to start something secret with you. He was just kissing you hello, because you worried both of us on this mission.”
“Hmph,” Obito huffs, cheeks flushing red once more as he unconsciously leans into her touch. “You could have just told me that, dumbass.”
“I did,” Kakashi whines, his leg twitching like he’s thinking about kicking at Obito but also thinking better of facing her ire if he actually does it. “And you thought I was lying.”
“You say all sorts of shit,” Obito says, matter of factly, before accepting a kiss on the forehead from Rin and settling back into the bed. “How am I supposed to know what’s true?”
Rin leaves to the sound of Kakashi’s exasperated groan, ignoring the way Obito calls out for help behind her. She’s got a sensei to call, and from the sounds of it, Kakashi’s hitting him with a soft enough pillow that she won’t have to patch him back together too much more by the time she gets back.
