the city at dawn—just as garbage truck engines started to rumble and sunlight was beginning to peak in between the buildings—was matt’s favorite time of the day. the streets were peaceful, quiet and abandoned. the coffee shop he visited on the same corner of his apartment building had just opened their doors. he had hours before anyone else would even step foot in the establishment, which made it the perfect place to enjoy his coffee and a book, occasionally. as the elder woman behind the counter took his usual order, matt could hear footsteps approaching. as if right on cue with his senses, the door chimed and in walked another costumer. surprised by the unexpected company, the red head extended a kind gesture. “ … i’ll cover whatever they’re having, too. ” he said, coughing up a folded ten dollar bill.
“ oh, uh ... thanks, man. “ peter says with a small smile. “ you don’t have to do that though. “ he makes sure to add. he can’t deny the fact that he’s thankful because he’s a broke college kid and any act of generosity is nice. “ just the usual, pam. “ he says to the woman behind the counter before turning his attention back to the savior of the day. “ so ... you an early riser ? or an insomniac ? “
