Absolutely true.  Staying above it does not necessarily mean ignoring it, though.  Sometimes you will need help, but that help is never sinking to their level.

Some people would call it “just lashing out” or similar, but if it were lashing out: it would be at you, not others.  Make no mistake, this is calculated (to some degree, even if they’re no mastermind), and this hits the nail right on the head.

One example might be escaping an abuse situation and finding out they’re telling people that you abused them (or giving you an ultimatum that they will do that, if you don’t do X).

Another example is them telling people you still want to sleep with them.

Or posting compromising photos/videos.

None of the above specific examples have happened to me, but I have learned that if someone’s personal narrative casts themself as a victim for each of their past relationships? Run.
