The concepts of NSFW is being cleared of the Internet under the false pretense of children’s safety when it’s really about the people in power sanitising for advertisers and pushing evangelical narratives AND that not enough is done to keep legitimately harmful content off of spaces that minors have access to are ideas that can coexist
can adults have their own fucking space?
a lot of people are misunderstanding this post. minors arent taking away your spaces. the internet is not being made safer for children, it is being sanitised for advertisers.
And also: minors’ spaces are being taken away.
When I was a kid, “barbie.com” looked like this
But now, if you type “Barbie.com” you’re taken immediately to Mattel’s online shop, surrounded by nothing but “shop now” links and toy collections.
Disney channel’s website is now “Disneynow.com” which still has games and shows appropriate for kids, but is aimed towards a younger audience as it combines Disney Jr and Disney Channel properties, and the look of the entire site is very juvenile and not very appealing to kids in the tween and young teen demographics.
Nick.com has been similarly streamlined and is focused primarily on streaming its shows, and the only games still left are 10 apps that can’t be played on browser.
Kid-friendly sites like icarly.com, Poptropica, Club Penguin, Neopets, Webkinz etc used to be insanely relevant and popular spaces built for kids and tweens.
Now, kids are being funneled into less moderated, more exploitative, and more public spaces like Roblox (its dangerous and exploitative nature exposed in these videos from People Make Games: (x) (x)), Fortnite (known for its gambling and microtransaction issues), and social media sites like TikTok, YouTube, and Twitter.
My elementary aged cousins spend their time on Roblox, YouTube, and some less than reputable game sites that are full of ads and stolen/reposted/reskinned games. My sister was on Musically/Tiktok and Twitter in middle school. They don’t have the same options for having fun online that I did when I was a kid, especially not when they get too old for nickjr and disneynow.
The internet has been condensed into about 5 popular sites that are full of ads, and it’s not fair to anyone.
Dropping a brick on the post below

A thing that I think about a lot lately is how we sometimes follow some subconscious “rules” that make things harder for ourselves.
Like, when I travelled, I used to unpack everything when I got home, and then before the next trip, I was always stressed because I still needed my toiletries to get ready the day of the trip, and then had to make sure I didn’t forget to pack anything. Until I realised that I could just buy a second of everything and just… keep the toiletry bag packed.
(Ironically, I realised this on my last trip before covid hit, so I didn’t actually get much use out of the idea yet.)
Or putting the bathroom cleaner in the bathroom, instead of with all the other cleaning stuff. Makes taking it out and quickly cleaning the sink so much easier.
Or, taking pills. I always saw people putting the pill in their mouth and then taking a drink of water. Tried that, constantly gagged and choked. Turns out, I have a much easier time if I put the water in my mouth first and then put in the pill, because it dulls the sensation of “there is a thing in my mouth that I have to swallow whole”.
Or, literally last night, I realised that instead of putting all my underwear in one place, and all my socks in another, and all my shirts in yet another, I should just make little bundles of a work shirt, a pair of socks and a set of underwear, so I only need to grab one thing in the morning instead of several, and then standing in the bathroom and realising I forgot socks.
I’m pretty sure I had more, but of course now I am forgetting them. Like the socks in the morning.
Oh yeah. Food. You know how parents always tell you, “no, you can’t have candy now, dinner is almost ready?” I kept telling myself that, and then getting hangry, and clumsy because my blood sugar is low, so I’ve started having a glass of water and a piece of candy before I start cooking, and then I can do the cooking much more easily.
(A friend linked this when I told her the candy thing, and yes.)
I keep a broom in every room of the house, usually behind a door. They’re cheap, and I’m in a small apartment but it makes everything so much easier.
I keep a suitcase with the travel toiletries already in it.
I think the most damage this site has done to me is making me think "It's fucken wimdy" when it is, in fact, fucken wimdy outside.
I taught one of my ranching buddies “it fucken wimdy” and now he says it around his older more established ranching buddies
The exhilaration I get- upon hearing an old rancher (I’ve never met before) in cowboy boots and a cowboy hat while on a horse, grimly saying “it fucken wimdy” in a thick west Texas accent as he looks down upon his cows- is incalculable
