What About Those Who Are Not Social Butterflies
Office party is a cheerful event where staff members get candid with lots of mindless music, food, and booze. It is what everyone loves, at least, that is what most of them think. The ones who love going out and talking to people about all sorts of things they do not mean. Parties are haven for extroverts and they can never have enough of it. The moment the news arrives that there is a party, through either email or just word of mouth, the party enthusiasts already begin to think what is it they are going to wear and praying the booze does not get over before they are drunk. But those very mails and words of office events becomes the cause of dread for the introverts. And while everyoneâs heart is throbbing to explode with enthusiasm and the true spirit of party, the introvertâs heart begins to skip beats. Their mind becomes anxious and their hands and feet begin to shiver. What are they going to do now? Then the mental iterations begin to find a possibility, if only one in a million, to avoid the social gathering.
And from practice, they know they will not be able to make it and will end up attending the party, they do not know what to do. Mostly they try to find a quiet place, where they do not have to face many of the people, they anyhow try to avoid in office. The awkwardness and the discomfort is better felt than written or talked about. They hide their anxiousness behind the drink and a blank face. They avoid eye contact as they do not want any conversations. The best trick if all times, that all introverts believe works, is to just look somewhere else but at one person. What introverts should really do to make through the whole ordeal, unscathed by an unpleasant comment or overreacted moment, is drink less. Keep the intake of alcohol to the minimum to stay in control. The worst that could happen to an introvert at a party is to get drunk.
Remember, that others are also humans, made of blood and bone and they too have similar feelings. Try to mingle with a a few of them or find another fellow introvert with a drink in the corner. Who knows, you might find a friend. Though office activities and parties have a formal touch, you do not have to continue a conversation you do not like. Excuse yourself politely if the person is boring you. And the last thing, try not to avoid it. Go to the party, have a drink, smile and chat a bit, and then make an early exit.
