The trauma of his parent's murder is when it started. They didn't die immediately. He didn't speak for years afterwards, until he was in his teens, and Alfred nearly had a heart attack when Bruce walked up and bullied his way into a hug and whispered thank you against his shoulder.

Dick is also selectively mute. He has a better support system than Bruce did, though. They can read each other with a nil fail rate when they're both mute, and it baffles everyone else.
