Duke Gardens

A tribute to the former Doris Duke Gardens, NJ. These were designed by the late heiress Doris Duke and opened to the public in 1964. They were her legacy to mankind. Apparently the current managers of the Duke estate dont share Doris Duke’s vision. In 2008 the gardens were closed to the public. It is my understanding that they will be destroyed. The Doris Duke Gardens were beautiful and short lived, just like the flowers they contained. Visitors who want to see a Duke Gardens need to go to Durham NC, where the Sarah Duke gardens still exist, and are maintained by Duke University.

Regrowing Store-Bought Meyer Lemons

Some of you folks might recall last year, I started a little indoor gardening project in my office. I grew some tasty lettuce for myself, but this year, inspired by @biodiverseed‘s 10,000 trees mission, I wanted to help spread the joy of plants within my sphere of influence. I saved a bunch of seeds from a box of Meyer lemons I bought from Costco. Most of these seeds germinated. I decided to plant the seeds out at my office, then give them out as gifts for the New Year. I have about 17 pots, each with multiple seedlings. The coworkers seem to be getting excited as well! Updates soon.

Yesterday this Eastern Tiger Swallowtail let me get up close and personal.

What a lovely lovely butterfly. You can see it here enjoying one of its top favorite flowers, Echinacea or Cone Flower.

If it is really lucky it can live up to one month in this form. The yellow tiger can be a male or a female and there is also a black tiger that can only be a female.

Found a baby Sakata melon! We also ate our first two tomatoes – a Mr. Stripey and a Japanese Black Trifele. Mr. Stripey was too acidic for me but the black tomato was amazingly smoky and will be in next year’s garden.
