rambling rant ahead
deactivated my twitter today. it was the place that most often made me compare myself to others and feel like i wasnt enough- not sharing enough, not doing enough, not getting enough attention or clout or whatever.
makes me jealous of others, makes me feel worthless or bad at what i do because i dont get the same validation that i see others getting through twitter. and i never wanted to share anything there anyway, i dont have the personality for it and it all feels like overly friendly shallow bragging anyway. the site just made me feel bad and i kept going back to it because thats what the algorithm does, it makes it seem like everything there is important.
am i also feeling down because i was rejected from grad school and i have no idea what to do, like, at all, in the broadest sense? sure. but twitter wasnt helping

I’m posting on instagram again!!
2011 vs 2019 — (13 years old vs. 22 years old)
boo lagoon progress!
rant about current journalism industry
so like i’m a freelance science writer
not by choice, but because i graduated in 2019 and there were no (ethical, non-clickbait) jobs out there, right? so, fine, i’ll be self employed until i can find something better.
well, the pandemic hit and lots of news outlets laid off lots of journalists because advertisers pulled their ads, and revenue plummeted.
so now, all of these news outlets are so helpfully publishing “pitch guides” for all of these new freelancers who are still trying to do journalism, because it’s their calling or whatever, but no longer have a staff job.
And I’m just bitter about it, okay.
They’re publishing these pitch guides because these news outlets still need content. So they’re like, “Here, we are ~generously~ offering you this guide so you can more easily work for us without the promise of stability or benefits.”
And here’s how it works, right?
Freelancers email (overworked, overwhelmed) news editors with an idea for a story. Usually in like 200-300 words, already did some research and talked to some experts. So work has already been done. The editor says either: Nothing, “No thanks”, “Yes, this sounds like a good story and we want you to write it,” or “This sounds like a good start, but... (asks questions that require more work.)”
So eventually, the pitch might reach a point where the editor says “Sure, you can write it.”
And then they say: “We’ll offer you $0.25-$0.50 per word for a 800-1200 word story and we want you to talk to 2 to 3 experts.” (Rarely, some outlets pay $1/word)
And the contract says: “The <news outlet> owns this story forever and ever and if a movie company wants to pay Big Bucks for the story, you don’t get any of it.”
And the writer might be able to negotiate the contract, but maybe not, and so they write the story. They submit their story to the editor. The editor sends it back with comments. The writer fixes the story. The editor takes a week to post the story online.
THEN.
The writer sends an invoice for the $400 or whatever.
And the outlet has 30 days to pay it. And they often pay late (which is illegal but it happens anyway because this industry sucks.) So from pitch to payment can take like 2-3 months, all for $400.
Anyway, publications posting pitch guidelines is not actually more helpful for the publication (which is getting cheap labor more efficiently) than it is for the writers (who are providing cheap labor.)
just applied to adopt an extremely fluffy cat and i am excited and nervous and she is SO FLUFFY AAA
update the app was approved and we’re picking her up next weekenddddd
update, her supplies are all here! new litter box, litter genie, fresh cat bed, brush (for the fluff; my current cat is a shorthair), fruity patterned collar, food and water bowls, all set up in her introductory room! we’re set to pick her up on Saturday morning and i am so excited guys omg. just can’t hype about it anywhere else so i’m venting my happiness into the void hi
i really hope the cats get along?? we’re planning on slow intros, keeping the current cat out of the office for the next few days so she gets used to the idea, have lots of treats on reserve to help them make positive associations...
new cat has arrived!!
she meowed the whole 30 minute drive home, small cute meows. when we let her out into the office (the room where she’ll start) she wandered around a little bit, found a few hiding places, and settled down under the couch. four hours later, she’s alternated between the back corner of the futon and the back corner of the nearest closet.
So far, the other cat is mostly leaving the area alone. I was afraid she’d sit outside and scream at the office door, but she hasn’t so far. four hours later and she’s just starting to scratch at the door a little bit. so far so good?
