Benefits and risks of inversion therapy for low back pain.

Patients presenting to the office with acute or chronic low back pain often ask questions about the potential benefits of using an inversion table to deliver inversion therapy, essentially head down. If you were to ask 10 different healthcare providers from different disciplines if inversion therapy is beneficial, you would probably get 10 different opinions. While inversion therapy in one form or another has been around for centuries, it only started gaining popularity in the West in the last 40 years. In the 1980s, the original form of inversion therapy was performed in gravity boots and hung upside down from a pull-up bar. It was kind of an all-or-nothing method. If you were in appreciable pain or lacked the athleticism to put your feet on the bar and then control your descent, this really wasn't an option for you. Shortly after the release of the Gravity Boot system, the same company released a very bulky but useful type of table. This allowed him to lace up his boots while seated and then stand on the table.
