Assumme that this is the thesis for the paper: In his “Learning to Read and Write”Frederick Douglass argues, through the use of different components of literature, that literacy is power. With your group, include an XES that goes with the given assertions. When you have completed your AXES, have one person in your group post it on his or her Tumblr account.
Assertion: By using diction that evokes religious, Douglass assigns a particularly spiritual quality to reading, writing, and language.
Assertion: The characters in Douglass’s narrative are invaluable to his argument, and each relationship helps define “power” and“literacy” in unique ways.
Assertion: Although Douglass’s argument applies to a wide range of historical contexts, the setting of his narrative lends an enormous amount of credibility to his argument.

This image "Ideas Books (Marilyn Monroe)" by Peter Jaworowski attempts to promote a few things: literacy, seduction, sex, biographies, Marilyn Monroe, and so on. The text in the advertisement is relegated to the bottom in small font. Why? We do not see the models face. Why? Why does the model have her leg lifted and why is she opening her robe? What does equating that particular book cover and a robe imply? These and many more questions could lead to interesting commentary about the advertisement itself!
This video is making many claims about freedom, the internet, President Obama, progress, law, etc.. Part of the chorus says, "Let us get together; let us unite. Don't let them get away with that...We will make history" but the audience cannot be certain who those pronouns refer to. What can we be certain about with this video and song? Who made it? Does the creator have much influence in the way some audiences may receive the content of this video and song?
"Same Love" by Ryan Lewis & Macklemore ft. Mary Lambert is accompanied by a video directed by Ryan Lewis and Jon Jon Augustavo. Both the song and video follow a young male narrator's journey in accepting and affirming his identity as gay. The beginning and end of the video start in a hospital room: the beginning shows the birth of our narrator and the end shows the death of him and his partner. Before the credits roll, the audience is shown a final glimpse of a mother's hand holding the hand of her newborn. Using images from birth to death to birth again, this video argues that life is cyclical. Paired with with lyrics of the song and bulk of the video's content, the audience is lead to believe the issue of same-sex oppression is also cyclical; however, the video's characters overcome such oppression through marriage and growing old together, suggesting that this cycle can be a positive one. But how do we make it a positive cycle? The video suggests at its conclusion to "Approve Ref 74" which refers to Washington State's Referendum 74 legalizing same-sex marriage. But how much in the video has to do with the legislative piece itself? How much does the song lyrics have to do with the legislative piece? These are two of many questions we can ask about such text!
