Grunkle Stan was utterly surprised, firstly, he was no way in hell- a father. (cringe worthy). Secondly, last time he checked he got heels for Great Uncles day which he may or may not wear while he’s alone and or very… very drunk, “Mabel sweetie, thank you for the card but I’m no father.” He stared at the glitter now sprinkled upon his hands. He will never get it off.

“I know you’re not silly! You’re my grunkle! It says it riiiigght ther!” she pointed out the spot where it said happy grunkles day. “Look waddles even helped!” She pointed to the back where there were rainbow hoof prints.

Ford accepts the card with a blink, a warm smile and the slightest tinge of a blush. “ You..made a card just for me?”

He thoughtfully, carefully opens it  ( mostly so he wouldn’t get too much of the glitter on his hands.. ) and read over the words fixing upon the picture of Mabel holding his hand  with a smile

“Thank you sweetheart, how… very thoughtful of you.  How about a big hug for your Grunkle Ford too?”

“Of course I did! I couldn’t let my grunkle go without a card on grunkles day!! Waddles even helped!” mabel said as she pointed out the hoofprints on the back. “OF COURSE!” she cheered and gave him a tight, mabel patented hug.

Chuckling softly, he r u f f l e d the girls hair affectionately before getting down on a k n e e to be eye level with the girl, “Thanks, sweetie. I didn’t realize G r u n k l e s Day was on the calendar.” he teased.

“Yup!! “ It was too, mabel had written on the calendar in glitter pen. “Waddles even helped look!” she pointed to the back of the card where there was rainbow hoof prints.

“Oh you wont slow me down silly!” she said as she playfully punched his arm. “Okiley Dokiley!” Mabel grabbed her picket basket and started to make lunch for her and her grunkle. She was SO excited that he was going to come along for her day of fun.

In the basement, Ford gathered up Journal 1 and his gloves, stuffing both into carefully sewn inner pockets in his coat lining. Hm, perhaps he might consider bringing along his gun? Again… just in case. Yes, especially since he was accompanying an innocent youngster. He fit his holster to his cross-chest strap and nodded, making double sure the safety of the gun was on.  Finally ready, he bounded back up to the ground floor and called out, “Mabel? Ready?”

“IIIIM READY!” mabel hopped out, picnic basket in arm, waddles at her side. Are YOU ready for an awesome fun day!?” She questioned as she bounced to her grunkles side.

“Certainly!” Ford offered her his hand and they set out together from the Shack into the breezy summer day. In many ways this was just the antidote he needed to some recent low feelings - the chance to get out and explore once more. Only this time, he wasn’t alone; he had a friend.

Taking her grunkles hand she skipped along, waddles at her side. “So is the rainbow rose a big rose? OhOh Does it sparkle??” she questioned as they walked along.

Ford was somewhat surprised. But really, he should have known. He knew that it was Father’s Day, and he certainly knew that he didn’t exactly have a shining example of living fatherhood to tell that to, and up until this point he was content with forgetting that it was a holiday.

Mabel was always full of surprises, and a ‘Grunkle’ card just suited her fine. He shook his head, grinning at her as he took the glitter soaked card from her.

It was no wonder that she had been all secretive about what she was working on earlier in the week…

“Thank you, Mabel. That’s..” And then he opened it, and the little drawing just sealed it. If possible the grin grew and his eyes, which had been slightly questioning before, softened. He got down to her level and hugged her.

“Thank you so much Mabel, it’s perfect.”

“I’m so happy you loved it!!” Mabel squeaked as she hugged her grunkle back. She had worked so hard on the cards for her grunkles so she was happy he loved it. “Waddles helped me!” Mabel pointed out the hoof prints on the back of the card.

It felt quite strange indeed to have a family again. Now and then it seemed remote and unreal to Ford, like another dream - even if it was a pleasant one.“Did you make a card for Stanley too?” he asked her, curious. He wondered, but didn’t have the courage to ask, whether she liked him or Stanley better…

“That’s a pretty talented pig,” Ford grinned, amused at his niece’s antics. “Oh?” Ford then looked surprised for a moment. “Where did you last see him, Mabel? Is there something he needs my help with?”

“Yes he is!! waddles is the smartest pig ever!!” Mabel cheered and giggled. “I think he was with grunkle stan. Umm I promised dipper I wouldn’t tell, but I know you are going to loooovvee it!”

“Heh, as long as you don’t mind an old man slowing you down,” Ford teased Mabel, with a wink and a broad grin. Then, he nodded. “You prepare the basket, let me go downstairs a moment to get the journal. It’s been a while, so I’d like to update my maps in the book anyway.” He slugged down the Mabel Juice, set his glass down and rose to go back to the basement. “Won’t be a second.”  He sprinted off, eager. This could be fun! He thought he might collect his energy gloves too… just in case. One never knew what perils might emerge from the woods.

“Waddles and I are going to into the forest and get flowers to press for our scrapbook! Then grunkle stan found this REALLY big bag of bird food so i’m gunna roll in it and be the queen of the birds!!!” With a loud Wurrr soon the mabel juice was ready.

“Ah, exploring the area’s flora… That sounds like an excellent afternoon. I certainly spent a great deal of time in my youth doing the very same thing. There are some wonderful flowers in the area, particularly the Rosaceae arcus- er, I should say, the eight-colored rainbow rose. That might be an object worthy of your quest. It’s quite stunning, actually.”  He poured himself a big glass of the Mabel juice, though he carefully plucked out the plastic dinosaur with his fingertips before drinking. “Actually, if you’d like, I think I remember where the flower blooms, if you’d like me to show you. If you want to go alone, that’s fine too, but you should probably take my Journal with you, as some areas of the woods are extremely hazardous to humans and pigs.”

((Hi there)) He’d managed a whole year without glitter … and to be honest he kinda missed it… He pulled a grumpy face, shook the card over the little girls head. “Y’know kid, this stuff looks a lot better you on!” His face cracks into a grin and he bends to sweep the girl into his arms for a hug. “Thanks, pumpkin,” he says softly.

“Ah, Mabel! Good morning!” Ford emerged from the basement, stretching slightly and all smiles. “I don’t suppose I could impose on you to make me an batch of your fabulous Mabel Juice, could I?”

“COULD YOU! I already got ya covered grunkle ford!” She skipped into the kitchen where she already had the blender out. “One batch of mabel juice comming right up!!”

“Perfect! Atta girl.” Ford placidly followed his great-niece into the kitchen, preparing himself a couple of slices of toast while she made the devious, insanely powerful beverage. He found it far more stimulating than coffee with the positive bonus of somehow jamming Bill from bothering his thoughts. Of course, it DID tend to make him a little excitable afterward while the sugar rush was on, and was probably bad for him in some greater sense. Probably.  “Any interesting plans for today, Mabel?” Ford chattered conversationally, sitting down at the table with his toast.
