‘Flatness’
“It is probably not wrong to assume that deep in the mind of every Japanese person lies the culture of the kimono. In the making of a kimono, an uncut length of fabric is put on the human body, resulting in an excess of fabric that creates drapes. The Japanese see this excess as ma (roughly translated as ‘space’) and never consider it illegitimate. The Japanese designers’ baggy, shapeless dresses were also, in many cases, asymmetric - another core element of Japanese aesthetics. Their designs demonstrated a universal approach to clothing, breaking down the barriers of gender, age and body shape just as a kimono does.” -Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion

BRUTUS 1992年11月1日号 NO.283 絶対裸体 The Art of Absolute Nude マガジンハウス 表紙:Title Design=堀内誠一、Photography=三好和義
A preparatory drawing by Kunichika for an aiban shunga print. Sumi on thin tissue with extensive pentimenti (giving an alternative position for the female).
Kansai Yamamoto (山本寛斎) embroidered “SUMO YAMAMOTO” stadium jacket. This is a Kansai Man piece, believed to be early 1990s. Two huge sumo wrestlers face off in the embroidery design on the back. The Kansai name is on the front of the jacket and the oversized sleeves are black leather.
