Two tiger salamanders making their way in the world

Hello!! I made this side blog for my household’s two Tiger salamanders, Smoliv (right) and Delilah (left). They are delightful creatures and I very much enjoy having them. More info under the cut!

Smoliv and Delilah are sisters from the same clutch. I’m calling them tiger salamanders here, but they are actually hybrids between a tiger sal and an axolotl that were bred to be fish bait. It’s very unethical to hybridize salamanders and in particular axolotls with terrestrial salamanders as axolotls are fully aquatic and neotenic, and have a very different lifestyle than salamanders that morph after their larval stage. Axolotls also tend to have a lot of problems if they DO morph, such as failing to eat and thrive.

Smoliv and Delilah did morph and are terrestrial critters. Thankfully they are both good eaters and they seem to be growing well. I’m told they may not live as long as normal tiger salamanders (10+ years) or get as big (11-12in!!) but I’m going to take care of them as best I can!
