At first, you hadn’t realized how gifted you are in the arts; you had just found an outlet that you found fun and stuck with it—your dad, however, was aware instantly. He praised and supported your creativity, encouraging you to explore and express yourself in a way that felt natural while also honing in on a remarkable talent that very few are gifted with. And you did just that; your love for art grew along with you, and you came to understand that you weren’t just good at art—you are an artist and an exceptional one at that. You signed up for every elective related to the arts, all the way through high school. Naturally, this path led you to major in the Visual Arts at university.
Now as you sit in class, the familiar scent of paint and the murmur of student chatter filling the air, you’re confident that choosing this journey was one of the smartest decisions you’ve ever made.
You look up from your sketchbook when you hear your professor calling for the class’s attention at the front of the room. As always, Professor Hwang speaks cheerily, a bright smile on her face, “Okay, everyone, the end of the semester is slowly approaching, so you know what that means… midterms!”
A wave of halfhearted applause and cheers fills the room.
“I can just feel the enthusiasm radiating throughout the room,” she jokes, clenching her fists together in enthusiasm. This earns her a few scattered laughs, “Which is wonderful, because before we wrap up today’s class, we’re going to talk about the final project.”
A smile spreads across your face; your mind races with all the creative directions this project could take you. You pull out your hot pink floral notebook to jot down points as Professor Hwang outlines the details. There are many reasons you wanted to enroll at Borahae, not the least of which is its reputation as one of the top universities in Visual Arts, but also because Professor Hwang is a highly acclaimed and well-respected educator and artist. Her final projects garner significant attention in the art world, and the success stories of her students who’ve earned top marks and subsequently gone on to do remarkable things are definitely a highlight. Throughout your time here, you’ve built a great rapport with Professor Hwang, who genuinely admires your art and your passion for it.
Professor Hwang stood at the front of the classroom, the SMART board illuminating the space as she began to speak, “As some of you may know, every year we hold an exhibition to display your final projects to raise money to help fund art supplies; this year it will be held at the Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa Art Gallery. I change the final project every year, and this year I want you all to create a unified triptych of large-scale paintings. The specific motif and concept you choose are entirely up to you, but I want you to explore a theme that is, in many ways, universal: love.”
She paced the room, her voice steady but passionate, “I know that may seem trite to some of you, but often, when confronted with something as profound as love, we tend to trivialize it and simplify its essence. The ancient Greeks categorized love into distinct types, helping us understand our connections—with ourselves, our partners, family, and the world. This is an opportunity for you to depict what love means to you personally.”
Professor Hwang leans against her larger wooden desk, her expression thoughtful, “Good art doesn’t just create an emotional impact; it captures the artist’s originality. I know you’re all talented artists; that’s why you’re here. You’ve demonstrated your technical skills all semester. However, what I truly hope to see is conceptual depth in your work—art that invites multiple interpretations.”
Her gaze bore an intensity you wonder if it made hearts race in the room like yours, “Art should elicit feelings—joy, sorrow, awe, discomfort. It doesn’t have to mirror your own experiences. So, I urge you to dig deep within yourselves. Love can inspire an array of emotions; I want you to reflect on what it stirs in you: excitement, fear, anxiousness, hope, comfort. What is love to you?”
The room fell silent as her words hung in the air, sparking ideas and introspection within each student.
“You all have a lot of freedom with this project; it can be familial, self-love, or romantic—anything. It just needs to involve showcasing the theme of love. And from the conversations I’ve overheard in passing, I know a lot of you have had your own puppy-love flings or whatever you kids call it nowadays. Let your imagination run wild. Every single one of your artworks will be displayed, so keep it PG-13; this is still a school project. I can’t have the Borahae student body be represented to the community by an exhibition of raunchy paintings, even if there are no rules in art.”
Professor Hwang received some genuine lighthearted laughter from you and the class. Whatever the remainder of what was discussed about the final project is lost on you because you spend the entire rest of the time scowling at your notes as you try to do a deep internal search.

You hear the classroom bustle and glance up at the clock on the wall; it’s 3:00 pm, which means you are done with classes for today. You put the cap back on your pen, place it in your pencil case and pack it into your tote bag. You’re about to pack away your books as well when someone catches your attention.
“Hey, Y/N, can I talk to you for a moment?” a deep voice asks you.
You glance up once more, this time to your right, and see Hyuksoo standing beside your desk. Hyuksoo is a senior graduate who is now working as a teaching assistant to help with tuition waivers and gain teaching experience for his resume.
Hyuksoo is a standout; he carries with him a reputation that resonates throughout campus. He is a Borahae legend, a title that seemed impossibly grand but is undeniable given his talent. Despite just a two-year age gap between you, Hyuksoo had carved a name for himself far larger than you could ever aspire to.
Out of the hundreds of artists to come out of this town and university, Hyuksoo is one of the best. His selection by Professor Hwang spoke volumes about his skill and potential. Known for her discerning eye, she only chose students she believed could achieve greatness, and Hyuksoo’s role as her teaching assistant was a clear endorsement of his abilities.
You have also formed a real bond with Hyuksoo; your relationship with him is much more casual than the formal one you have with Professor Hwang. With him, there was an ease that came from closeness in age and the fact that you are his junior undergrad. You’d go so far as to say it felt like a friendship, a rarity in the competitive world of art. Having someone who not only shared your passion but also possessed remarkable talent was incredibly refreshing.
Conversations with Hyuksoo were always invigorating. They spark creativity and push you to think outside the box. You appreciate the connection you forged, knowing how hard it can be to find genuine friendships in the cutthroat art scene. You learn so much from him—he had a wealth of knowledge about techniques, inspiration, and the intricacies of being in the art world. With every interaction, your own artistic horizons expand, and you feel more motivated than ever to create.
You smile at him, “Hey, Hyuksoo.”
He looks down, a playful smile dancing on his lips as he adjusts the strap of his bookbag, “Lost you at the end there, huh?”
You scrunch your brows with a little glossy pout, “Huh? I didn’t go anywhere; I was sitting here the whole class?”
Hyuksoo chuckles, shaking his head, “I meant, you seemed to get lost in your thoughts after Hwang brought up the theme for the final project.”
“Oh…” your voice droops as you stare down at the page in your notebook, the weight of the project pressing down on you.
His playful expression shifts, softening as he tilts his head, “Yeah, oh.”
With a gentle tap of his finger against your forehead, he adds, “You have nothing to be worried about, Y/N. You’re a beyond talented artist, especially when it comes to painting. This project is practically designed for you. Just do what you always do, and you’ll pass with flying colours—pun intended,” he winks.
You let out a sigh, your shoulders sagging as you slouch slightly in your seat, “It’s not that I’m worried about painting; it’s that I have no idea what to paint.”
Hyuksoo nods, his hands tucked into the pockets of his slacks, exuding an air of understanding, “I know the theme may seem broad, but once you pull from personal experience, ideas should start flowing right out of you.”
“But that’s the problem, I’m not really sure what my experience with love is. At least, I don’t think I am. I haven’t really thought much about it, honestly.”
Silence envelops the room for a moment as you both consider your words. You can feel the weight of your confession hanging in the air. It’s true; love is abstract, elusive, and when you try to begin processing your experience with it, it leaves you feeling vulnerable. But as you watch Hyuksoo ponder your admission, the tension momentarily eases, replaced by warmth.
“That’s fair. Well, try starting with a simple approach,” he suggests.
You hope the conversation starts a shift, igniting the creative spark you desperately need. As you talk, you want to unlock that well of inspiration buried deep within that usually surfaces when aided by this brilliant artist.
“What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of love?” he continues.
You frown, feeling a knot tighten in your stomach.
More like who comes to mind when you think of love.
At that moment, a notification goes off in your head and on your cellphone simultaneously, almost as if the universe is answering Hyuksoo’s question for you.

You shake your head quickly, trying to clear your thoughts, reluctant to dive deeper. You’re not ready to carry those unresolved feelings any further right now.
“What was it you wanted to talk to me about?” you ultimately respond, trying to hide the flurry of thoughts about the project swirling in your mind.
You notice the brief flicker of surprise in his eyes at your sudden change of subject, but he swiftly transitions back with a smile. He makes his way around the desk and pulls out the chair next to yours before settling in.
“Right. As Hwang mentioned, the money we raise from the exhibition ticket sales is going towards supply costs. She mentioned that she’s inviting a bunch of her friends in the art scene, including some really big names. Which means there will be some seriously important people checking out all the artwork exhibited.”
You raise an eyebrow, nodding slowly, not quite sure where he’s going with this. Your heart flutters a little, excitement bubbling beneath the surface, even as a wave of confusion washes over you.
Why is he telling you this? You can’t help but bite your lip, feeling a mix of nervous energy and curiosity buzzing around in your stomach.
“Okay…” you draw out the word, squinting your eyes at him in a way that shows your suspicion, “Didn’t you just tell me not to worry? That sounds like something to worry about.”
Hyuksoo tilts his head and shrugs, “Maybe for other artists, yeah, but not you,” he replies, his expression earnest and continues.
“This is an incredible opportunity for your work to be seen by exactly the kind of people who could really help launch your career as a newly graduated artist. Just think about it, what better chance to make an impression,” he leans in slightly, excitement bubbling over, “I know for sure one of those people invited is Edgar Gray.”
Once you weigh what he said, suddenly it clicks. Your heart races. Your eyes widen, and you gasp. Without thinking, you grab him by the shoulders, shaking him in pure excitement.
The words escape your lips in a hushed squeal, “Edgar Gray? He’s one of my favourite artists!”
“I know! I thought of you immediately when I heard. You have to keep it a secret, though. I’m not supposed to mention it to anyone,” he points at you and huffs a laugh.
You nod vigorously, your eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. With an adorable grin, you bring your fingers to your lips, mimicking the action of zipping your mouth shut. Then, to add some sprinkles on top of the gesture, you pretend to lock it tight and toss the imaginary key over your shoulder, a giggle escaping your lips. Playfully trying to show how appreciative you are that he chose to share this information with you, even though you are beyond eager to scream about this from the rooftops.
His shoulders shake gently as he laughs through his nose, then his gaze drops from your face, and he fidgets with his watch band, a hint of nervousness in his demeanour, “I’m not supposed to pick favourites, but honestly, you’re definitely the best in this department. If anyone deserves to get recognized and have their talent celebrated, it’s you.”
“Really? You-You think I’m good enough to make it?” you ask, a small smile breaking through, disbelief and hope swirling inside you.
“Without a doubt. I don’t call you the star student for nothing,” he shoots back without hesitation.
“But this is Edgar Gray we’re talking about! He’s just going to spare a glance at my painting and move on. This man has painted literal masterpieces. Masterpieces, Hyuksoo. And me? I had to redo my eyeliner twice this morning! I’ve never painted something worthy of being called a masterpiece!” you exclaim, your voice tinged with anxiety. You pause, catching Hyuksoo’s gaze as he watches you with an amused smile, “It’s just… it’s not like he’s going to be impressed.”
Hyuksoo’s grin widens, and he leans forward a bit, his confidence radiating every time he speaks, “Then it sounds like it’s time to create a masterpiece of your own for the exhibition. Every iconic artist has created an influential piece. And I know you will make yours, Star.”
His words sparked something within you, a mix of excitement and apprehension, “But—”
“No buts!” Hyuksoo interrupts, his tone playful yet firm, “You’ve got this. You have ideas; maybe inspiration hasn’t struck yet, but it will. Your style is unique, and it’s time to show it off. Imagine Edgar Gray looking at your work and being inspired! Just think about that moment.”
You take a deep breath and nod with a flutter of determination igniting in your chest, “Okay, okay! I’ll try.”
“Good!” Hyuksoo encourages, giving you a gentle pat on your back, “Now get to it! Who knows? This might be the piece that ends up being studied in this very class in a few years.”
He checks the time on his watch before getting up and putting his bookbag on his shoulder, “I’ve gotta run; I’ve got grading to do. But I’d love to hear what ideas you come up with. Remember, I’m here if you need any help.”
“Thanks, Hyuksoo. You’re the bestest!” you beam, your heart full of gratitude.
“No, that’s all you!” he smiles and winks before heading out.
As the door closes behind him, the chaos of brainstorming fades as you get absorbed into thoughts of Edgar Gray. Just the idea of someone with his talent backing you as an artist is worth more than gold. You can’t wait to impress him with your work!
