What and why?
I met a kid that was fucking convinced that the US wasn’t actually a part of the UN, but instead is simply an ally. IDK where he pulled this from, considering we’re on the FUCKING SECURITY COUNCIL AND A FOUNDING NATION. I just don’t anymore.
What do you mean "This is etymologically incorrect and silly and it makes me angry" (this is not in a rude way, just a question because the answer should informe me) i think this definitivamente sounds rude, and its not my intention 😔 if so sorry 😑
Mankind has nothing to do with male people just like the word woMAN has nothing to do with being a male person. Man or mann meant human person both male and female in Old Saxon, while wif and wer were the words for woman and man respectfully. The etymology of woman literally suggests that its formed of the words wif and man, literally female human. The shift in meaning mann > male person is quite recent and it equals the same change that saw Latin shift from ver (adult male) to homo (earthling, human being, person). So when people are saying man or uomo, they’re actually using its original and truer meaning of mann meaning human, they’re not excluding feMALE huMANs.
To say that the history of man (humans) (mankind) is named after male people is quite stupid, especially because it leads people to believe that it’s true. Also kind in mankind means species, so techincally when you say mankind youre referring to the human species, not to a male kind, nor to a kind man. Cfr. Kindered for example.
although they have their etymology sort of mixed, I think the principle of “excluding females” is still there in the fact the word meant either specifically adult male or general human beings but never just adult female.
I mean in the sense that if you read older literature you will often find ‘he’ used for the general reader because that was the gender that mattered, in the same way I find it hard to believe it’s just a coincidence & there was no sexism involved that man originally meant both male and human species (because males were the ones that mattered)
frankly the etymological argument is bullshit (and a well known linguistic fallacy tbh). i love etymology as much as the next historical linguist, but unfortunately most people don’t walk around with little etymological dictionaries in their heads. words are not understood through their etymologies, but rather in their sociolinguisitic context, and in this case that context is a patriarchal schema (that already existed even when the word was supposedly “neutral”).
Oh god fuck off with this patriarchal bullshit that you like to mention every time. it’s just a word like huMAN, feMALE, MANicure and other words containing words related to the male people. This is not even a feminist argument here this is just pure bs. by this logic let’s all stop using the word ‘hello’ because it contains the word ‘hell’ and that’s ungodly and demonic.
1) the etymological argument is literally a logical fallacy. justifying the current words and their criticism/lack of criticism by claiming their origin is justified does not logically answer the argument.
2) language is a tool in which we help describe the world. all language is loaded with an agenda, and is on some level, idiomatic. to say ‘mankind’ shouldn’t be criticized because it was used differently some 1200 years ago doesn’t make sense - because the tweet in particular describes the use of the words as they are today. 3) it’s different from ‘hello’ because we have categorized hello and hell differently. ‘mankind’ rests in a category that describes the human experience, the human history - which is exactly what the tweet in question criticizes.
4) i am guessing you were socialized as a man, and thus, when you were a child and taught about mankind and human history, you weren’t grasping for the “but where are the people that look like me?” so don’t tell me that it isn’t loaded. yes, we need to teach girls accurate history (though accurate history would include a lot more important women), but the word and the framing of teaching constantly erases women in history class. language frames our thinking, and this frame of thought aids in excluding women.
5) we constantly criticize language and word use despite etymological origins. as i stated, the way we speak frames things. we are constantly criticizing the media about how they are framing their rhetoric, and what kind of rhetoric politicians are using. again, the etymological argument fails to answer real criticism of speech, the tweet in question is no different.
ah yes the truer, relevant, correct meaning that i needed to research for five minutes to find out about
Erm I didn’t have to research anything and its sad that all this issue has originated from a post where I explained the etymology of a misleading millenia old word. This didn’t even have anything to do with feminism and I have no idea why it’s become a “feminist” issue. Y'all need to calm down and have a cup of tea and pet a cat.
lol well do some research next time & you might not look like such a menonist eejit. There’s a reason most people are disagreeing with you.(majority of whom are wifmen & more suitable to give opinions on whether something is sexist than either of us tbh)
Only thing is you dont have to necessarily be a bitch about it and insult me because I was literally explaining the ETYMOLOGY and only the etymology of a word. Like, how dare you call me a meminist.
I’m gonna go ahead and take langsandlit’s stance on this. This really isn’t a etymology discussion at this point. Y’all have gone off-topic, not to mention the entire notion that it, in this very moment of linguistic continuum, is an issue is simply fucking asinine.I’m so miffed that everything is somehow a feminist issue despite it being nothing of the sort. Seriously fuck you, I just want to learn shit.
I’m so done
Today, in my law enforcement class, I met somebody who legit thought that AIDS was caused by the gays. Though yes, statistically, there are more gay and bisexual men with aids, that is both a) correlation, not causation, b) mostly caused from needles, not the actual sex, and c) AIDS stands for ACQUIRED immunodeficiency syndrome, cause by HIV HUMAN(FUCKING KEY WORD) immunodeficiency virus. This fucking misinformed tool.
