SMS Security Tips For Protecting Your Home From Burglars
A theft is a very personal crime, one that shakes people to their core. A home is a person's safe space, it's where they have the things and people they care about.
People come to us here at SMS Security for the best products they can get to get the best home security, but, no matter what we provide them, if people don't practice good security habits, then their homes will be targeted. Thankfully, there are simple and effective ways to reduce a home's likeliness to be invaded, and we've listed a few of them down.
Use your keys wisely.
Your house key is, well, the key to get into your home. As a result, don't be careless with them; don't leave them in obvious places like under the mat, atop the door frame, or anywhere else that people will look. On the off chance that you do lose it, make sure it doesn't have your name, phone or address on the key ring, since it's basically giving directions to an easy target. If you've moved recently or lost some keys, change the locks ASAP!
Watch the trash.
Most people ignore their trash, which is actually a security issue. See, if you leave trash unchecked, criminals can victimize you. It's not uncommon for us here at SMS Security to have people come in saying that someone's going through their trash, and that's because people leave their documents in the trash. If it tells people what you've recently bought, and/or contains sensitive data regarding your identity, make sure to get rid of it, or putting some locks on your bins.
Visibility (and lack of thereof)
If you have any points of entries or security systems, you'll want them to be as visible as possible. They're good deterrents, both of them, as hiding the former is what criminals want; they want to be as hidden as possible, while hiding the latter counters their point as possible deterrents. Make sure that entry points aren't hidden behind bushes and trees, make sure that locks are checked regularly, and make sure that your security system is in plain view, but not their weakness.
Don't tell people you're gone
A lot of people tend to put up social media posts that say that they're not at home, and/or cancel regular deliveries. Bad idea. If a company like us here at SMS Security see a Facebook posts that say "I'm on vacation!", or that they leave their home unattended, we sigh wearily; it's basically people hanging a neon sign that says 'easy target'. Have a neighbor pick up packages and receive the mail, make sure the lawn is mowed, the bills paid, and, if you're the type to pack your car before leaving, make sure it's not visible.
