"I must say." The man came closer, inspecting the work. The chalk circle. The candles. "This is very cute." He hummed, facing back to her. "You've done your research. Like a good wine I'm sure I can figure the origins...hm..." He rubbed his chin, looking over it again before snapping his fingers, pointing at the other. "The Black Book? 1695? Come on - I must be close, right?"
she can only gape for a moment, taking in his appearance. he only looks like a man dressed in oddly opulent clothing, but inaaya is certain that if she takes a proper look, she'll find textile manufacturing techniques that haven't been in vogue for at least the last two centuries. "close," she manages to echo before finding her own words, "the third revision completed by his apprentice, forty years after." it's hard to see him in the flickering candlelight, but something in her doesn't wish to get too close. "you heard my summons?"
"i don't like the word lie .... i prefer the word deter or deceive. lying implies there's a malicious intent behind it." though, some would suggest that cece was so full of malice it was hard to see anything but. "i know all too well how some of your colleagues feel about the type of woman i can be. i was merely protecting myself. can't you understand that?" manipulation was a form of witchcraft, she thought. though, she could do that without the dark power that had grown inside of her since she was a little girl. she didn't often use it for terrible things, but she certainly didn't like people nosing around where their noses didn't belong. "can you forgive me?" a smirk played upon her lips, though she knew the answer was likely a no.
"protecting yourself?" the words blurt out, incredulous. these ones isadora can't stop in time. she really should sign herself up for sensitivity training when this is over, she thinks wildly to herself. if she's in any fit state to sign up for sensitivity training. but the bullshit in cece's words are clear; there's no reason she'd be telling isadora all this now if she really felt any threat against her own person. maybe the other agents had been right to tell isadora not to get too friendly with witches, even the ones they consulted with occasionally. her request goes right over isadora's head, thoughts whirling as they are. "where is he? what did you do? cece, you didn't kill him... did you?"
On evenings like these, moments seemed to lazily seep by. There's but a couple of regulars, talking in hushed voices in the corner booth. A few lost souls who dropped by, left after but one drink, deciding Hongxian just wasn't their sort of place.
Xiaoyin busied herself with wiping glasses until a subtle meow of a ginger cat lounging on the windowsill brought Xiaoyin's attention to a new client. She gave them a few moments to find their seat and get comfortable before approaching, planning to take their order.
"What would you like to---" the directness of the stranger almost took the Jade Rabbit off guard but she quickly readjusted, scanning the other closely. There's the anomaly, she noticed, in the way dimness clung to their person. And like that, it's no longer Xiaoyin the bartender standing in front of their client but the physician Tu'er Ye. "What troubles brought you here, esteemed guest?"
"a glass of house pour, please." zinn knows what they want. the person behind the bar may find their issue more pressing, but zinn's lived with it for a few good years now. a little bit longer won't make them any more damned than they already are.
drink in hand, zinn gives it an experimental swirl before taking a sip. "cute place," they comment, keeping their voice light. "hate to darken your doorstep with my problems, but..." now they draw back their left sleeve, revealing a hand covered with a black glove. with one tug, the fabric begins to slide off their hand— but the colour stays. an inky stain, beginning in the middle of their forearm, spreads over their skin, coating their hand entirely. the light around zinn pulls away even more, as if taking a step back at the sight of their curse.
"fun cosmetic," they sigh wistfully, turning the hand over to show the physician. "strong magic. but it's eating me alive." eyes flick up to xiaoyin's, the casual demeanour gone. "i don't suppose you've got a remedy for things like that."

sorry i gotta get a little pissy and this is the only place i can do it without the person involved seeing. and normally i wouldn't care so much but she's a mutual friend and we're going on a trip together soon so i am trying to keep the peace. ai and religious (dismissive) talk below
recently in a chat group the bf & i were confused about something this friend said so she sent a screenshot of google ai explaining the thing along with the message "sorry [bf & jihn] but google ai says this" and it's so like. use it or don't but girlie you NEED to be comfortable with the fact that refusing to examine your principles means i'm going to think less of you. apologising isn't going to fix anything and i don't owe you absolution for your sins. even the POPE said this shit is b a n a n a s perhaps as a catholic girlie there are more people to apologise to than me for your laziness and apathy. don't say sorry jihn. say sorry your holiness. say sorry jesus for squandering my one wild and precious life on ai.

I’m blindsided by authors using ai in their works. how can readers and writers tell if the writing is ai generated?
I’m gonna assume writers know whether or not their own works are ai because they either write them themselves or have ai write for them.
but as for readers (or writers who read other writers’ works), no, you can’t tell unless the writer themself says their works are ai generated. anything else is witch hunt, speculations and possibly wrongful accusations — all of which harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.
so if at any point you think an untagged work is ai and if that bothers you, quietly click away. but you can never know for sure based on vibes. because everything ai writes, a human writer does. that’s what ai was trained on and what it was trained to mimic.

You can notice certain telltale signs in some of the writing, such as short sentence stacking and usage of "not x not y but z" structures. But you have to be familiar with AI writing styles to be able to notice that.
I’ve been writing “not x, not y, but z” way before gen ai became a thing. I’ve read works that have “not x, not y, but z” in them, and I’ve read those works way before gen ai became a thing. I’ve also been using em dash way before gen ai became a thing, and I’ve seen em dash used in so many written works way before gen ai became a thing. I know for a fact some human writers actually prefer short sentence stacking too.
every “ai telltale” is something humans write before, otherwise ai wouldn’t have been able to mimic it in the first place. because it needs human-made works to mimic on.
when I say ai witch hunt, speculations and accusations harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more, “not x, not y, but z” and em dash are one of the main things I’m talking about.
As I saw someone say recently, when you start declaring "obvious tells," from punctuation to sentence styles, to be proof of AI, what you're actually spotting is trace amounts of the original source material.
seeing a gifset of em/ly bad/r got me thinking about how i'm sometimes a little bit dismissive of commonly used fcs (and don't let that make you anxious; it's my own need to be unique and indie that drives this instinctive reaction and it's something i should work on) and she was one of those fcs in my mind, but right before i took my mental health hiatus i was in a group w someone using her and they were so nice about my leaving that her face is forever associated w this really sweet and kind person i might never meet again and it fixed my impression of her as a fc. sometimes it's really the unexpected kindnesses for me.
