Birthdays are fun, you get presents, cake and a birthday message from that one guy from high school that you never actually spoke to in person but for some reason added you. But do you know what's not fun? When people feel the need to sing happy birthday to you even when you plead with them not to. The happy birthday song is the most frequently sung song in the world and yet I've never met anyone who enjoys having it sung to them. The main reason why it's so awkward is that you don't really know how to react to people singing it to you, so most people just sit there with their shoulders tensed and a stiff smile waiting for the torture to end. But it doesn't need to be like this, here are a few things you can do to ease your embarrassment. 1. Creepily stare at everyoneThis may not ease the awkwardness, but it may put some people off enough for them to stop singing. 2. Sing alongIt's your birthday, you can sing to yourself if you want to. This is a great way of relieving the shame you feel while transferring it to everyone else. 3. Pretend to be Simon CowellPretend that you're concentrated very hard while they're singing, and then when they're done tell them how out of tune they were. If you're mean enough they'll never sing happy birthday to you again. 4. Ignore them and start eating the cakeEat away the pain as you continue to use food as an escape instead of confronting your problems. 5. Leave the countryAs soon as they open their mouths just get up and head for the nearest airport. Pick a destination, change your identity and never look back.
