Snare Drum Rudiments

The snare drum is a very common drum that is often used in a wide variety of musical genres.  These genres include rock, pop, rap, orchestral, country, drum and bass, and many more.  

Snare drum rudiments are specific combinations of rhythms and embellishments that the drumming community has accepted as a standard vocabulary.  There are the "Essential 40 Rudiments" that consist of rudiments developed prior and during the Civil War.  There are also "hybrid rudiments" that are more modern rudiments that have swept the drumming community.

Essential snare drum rudiments include rudiments such as a single drag, paradiddle, double paradiddle, triple paradiddle, flam accent, and flam taps.  

Hybrid rudiments include book reports, cheese, flam fives, and inverted flam taps. 

It's important that you learn your rudiments so that when you talk with a drummer and exchange ideas you can both be on the same page as to what you're talking about.
