I like how, after having spent his night observing the Count’s nefarious baby-thievery and having spent his day climbing the castle walls in search of a means of escape, Jonathan makes sure to check the dates on all the dust-covered gold coinage and to count all fifty of the ominous boxes.
“I’m under constant threat and possibly about to die… time to fall back on what everyone in this book does best: noticing and recording seemingly meaningless minutiae!”
Let us not forget, he is engaged to a woman who memorizes train schedules for fun. They were made for each other.
I feel this sort of exacting dorkitude is pretty common amongst the entire narrating cast. I sort of imagine that the bulk of the journey on the Orient Express was spent with the Harkers and the two doctors killing time by seeing who could recite the most digits of Pi, or possibly playing “Name the obscure Latin quotation,” while Arthur and Quincey sat around feeling awkward.
“As to the tall, curly-haired man, I suppose it was the one who was with me at the last Pop. Someone has evidently been telling tales.”
“Pops” or “Popular Concerts" were regular series of Saturday afternoon and Monday evening performances at St. James Hall which ran during the winter season. As Lucy wrote this passage in early May, the “last Pop" probably refers to the season’s final performance, which (using the commonly accepted 1893 date for the novel) would have been on Monday, March 27. Based on reviews in The Athaeneum, the program for the evening would have been as follows:
Brahm’s sextet in B flat, Op 18.
Schumann’s Pianoforte Quintet in E flat, Op. 44
The last two movements of Rubinstein’s sonata in D for pianoforte and violoncello, Op. 18
Two movements from Spohr’s Duo Concertante in A for violin
Three of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances
Four Lieder by Schubert and Brahms
While I had pick and choose the Hungarian dances and Lieder, I did my best to roughly reconstruct this playlist on 8tracks [link], in the event that anyone else shares my love of delving into really obscure Dracula minutiae and wants to listen to something close to the soundtrack of Lucy and Arthur’s only known date.

"grace. grace! grace give attention. rocky perform human ritual of escape closet now. statement."
"come again?"
"i learn more from thinking machine. human gender preference. attraction to same gender, means word 'gay.' all eridian same gender." rocky stands straight up. "rocky come out to grace now. all rocky plural gay, statement."
"...wow, that's... rock, i'm not sure it makes much sense to apply human ideas of sexual orientation to a monogendered species."
a long and judgmental pause. then:
"grace HOMOPHOBIC, question????"
Clip of Lucy Dacus on the Las Culturistas podcast.
You can tell this film was made with so much love and passion just from all the little details. Like the 3D board replicating everything Grace has written on the white board so the children can see! So cool
The finnish language doesn't make a distinction between modern formal "mister", some forms of the title "master", and is also used in some contexts where the english language would say "lord". The guy who runs our local game store has a habit of referring to me and my boyfriend in this way - I don't know if that's what he does to all customers, or if it's just us two specifically - and while I perfectly understand that in context it's simply "gentlemen", it does have a mildly renaissance feel to it.
