It probably was a dig at both, thought the insult is subtle and not entirely intentional. He’s always approached things brutally, so this strange passive aggressive doormat approach is a little odd to him, especially with how comfortable the other is with it.

the worst is having a dream where someone loves you and you can practically feel them touching you and it feels so real and then you wake up and it’s like the life is being sucked out of you and the happiness just drains out of your body and you feel empty again

It’s very likely he’s not doing nearly enough with his life to be witness to such a question, or if he’s actually thinking about it with the intensity that he is.
