I love Lupita and support her films. She’s an absolutely beautiful woman perfectly fitting to play Helen of Troy and the vile hatred spewed towards her and other Black actresses should be put down whenever and wherever it happens.

The women all got thinly written parts in this film. Penelope and Athena are aggressively underwritten compared to the original The Odyssey.

Nolan does not write female characters with interiority he’s known for and has been called out for this.

Charlize Theron and Zendaya have the same level of acting quality in this film, in my opinion, because they’re given nothing to work with.

Nolan wrote this film as well, so that’s on him as well in addition to his boring directing choices.

Compare this to another film that recently got snubbed at the Oscars where every single female character (in a large cast with male leads) got written with a voice and interiority.

Nolan just doesn’t seem to think much of women as characters and is uncomfortable exploring the female psyche and sees them as objects to motivate men.

I'm really happy as a culture we are pushing back against dumb art, saying we want complex things, not just things that look cool and can be watched while also scrolling on one's phone. But I will say I hope everyone takes the energy hating on Emerald Fennel's Wuthering Heights and brings it to Christopher Nolan's Odyssey. It looks equally bad and brainless AND I don't want the Wuthering Heights dogpile to be majority informed by misogyny and an adversion to sex. Because I do think that even when art is deserving of criticism, art by women (and other minorities groups but this is Ms. Fennel's) always gets more vitriol. The point is demanding better, not allying ourselves with conservatives
