The Neighbor Children

I've recently moved into my own apartment, and have gotten to know my neighbors a bit more - particularly the kiddos.

Have always gotten along well with kids. Not in a weird way, but in a way that I treat them like tiny people and don't belittle them for wild ideas or stupid questions. I speak to them as I would anyone else, just with more reserved language.

The oldest one actually pointed out to me, in a very intellectual discussion about minecraft, that the underwater "boss" didn't have a health bar - and therefore wasn't a "boss" like I'd thought. He seemed very happy to teach a 2011 minecraft veteran something new.

He also keeps my outside plants watered, which is cool. Howecer, I can't leave water in my can. He hasn't quite grasped that plants can have too much water.

As much as I would fight for these kids if the need arose, they can be pretty wild in ways I'm not used to coming from my previously isolated living space. Constant screaming being the biggesg one.

Why children feel the need to do this? I can't remember?

I've also been hit with both a large stick and a ball - accidentally of course, and these were learning lessons- but like, OW.

I made them cookies today.

They were so proud of me. They asked how I made them and "dollar general" slipped out. The "oh" that followed made me take physical damage.

Oh, and I've convinced them I'm a wizard!

My backstory ("living on top of a hill in a big rock house wasn't really working, so now I rent an apartment" <-true) combined with the fact I'm regularly crafting on a large staff and handmade broom out front in the breezeway?

Tbh, I'd think I was a wizard too.

Going from living secluded out in the middle of the woods to living in an apartment is an utterly fascinating experience

Give me unique clothes, pieced together from scraps of worn, used, and/or tattered clothes that would've otherwise gone to some landfill in a 3rd world country.

Give me more one-of-a-kind DIY pieces that the love and care shows through more with every stitch.

Give me patchwork pants and darned socks and make knit sweaters cool.

I refuse to feel like the only one taking the time and mending my old clothes.

Learn how to sew, even if just to repair your own buttons and small holes

People need to read the UN Conventions On The Rights Of The Child before becoming parents and regularly while parenting and I am so serious about this.

Everyone SHOULD read it, and it is often a distressing experience to do so. Back in 1929 it was internationally recognized that children in particular needed to have a codified set of rights, it has been improved on since - in many ways it is still not perfect but it needs to be understood that the rights contained within are the BARE MINIMUM.

If any of these are breached - whether on the home scale or on the cultural one, particularly for signatory countries - that is a fundamental issue.

I promise that learning what the established bare minimums are in universal human rights frameworks will enable you to cut through so much propaganda immediately.

Children and teens are full human beings and by becoming parents an immense responsibility is applied to treat them as such. They need open and clear communication, not to be talked down too, and to have their questions answered. They have the right to autonomy and life.
