dean telling cas “i need you” instead of i love is so much more meaningful to me because dean was raised on the idea of need being a currency. to be needed is to be valuable, to need is to be weak. he is told by john, you must be able to hunt on your own, survive on your own, raise and protect your brother on your own. you cannot rely on anyone or need anyone else — to do so is to fail. and then he says i need you to back me up on hunts, to protect your brother when i go out on my own. your brother needs you to help him and keep him safe. this is your job, your responsibility, as you father this is all i want from you.

dean has existed only to be needed and never to need, and despite that, he looks at cas and needs him anyways

cas pretending at the the beginning of s10 that he’d be okay taking out demon dean was just as much a cope as sam telling dean in s9 that he’d let him die if their situations were reversed and im obsessed with it

the difference is, however, that sam is entirely aware that he’s a lying liar who lies. peak younger sibling moment who isn’t getting his way pulling out his arsenal. cas though? he believes, even after the draping yourself in the flag of heaven monologue and hannah trying to make him kill dean, that he’d be capable of ending dean’s life.

which is why it’s nausea inducing when cas doesn’t fight back at the end of the season when moc dean is trying to murder him.

i think dean would be more giddy over the fact that him and cas are best friends than if they were in a relationship.

like they are laying together on the bed, cas is on his phone and dean just randomly turns to him and asks “hey, i’m your bestfriend, right?” and cas just gives him a look wondering if he’s serious and he is. and cas goes a little soft and says “yes, dean.” and dean lights up and smiles and shuffles closer and just says “awesome” in that little whimsy voice like he can’t believe it. and for the next ten minutes is like “you’re my best friend too. like, ever. you’re my best friend, cas.” and all cas does is smile and mumbles “yes, dean. i know, dean.” and keeps holding him.

if you post a clip or reference a scene of sam and dean fighting or bickering and say that one is evil to the other and a terrible person because of it i immediately assume you’re an only child because that’s just how siblings act. they’re bullying the fuck out of each other one second and then best friends the next like that’s such sibling behaviour.

like nobody is meaner to me than my little sister, and im just as mean right back, but at the end of the day shes my best friend and we can tell each other anything like thats just how siblings work
