dusk of february 22nd, 2025 at tallulah gorge, rabun county, georgia. this was the filming place of the southern appalachian horror hit Deliverance (1972) - although we don't usually see this film as a positive hit for our public reputation. along with scenes nearby along the Chattooga river (Georgia/South Carolina state line), it shows the Mount Carmel church and cemetery, which was in the middle of being flooded to create Lake Jocassee (Oconee and Pickens county, South Carolina) and now lies on the lake's bottom, about 130ft (40m) underwater now. despite locals hating this film and refusing to see any benefit for the public's view of northern georgians and northern south carolinians, the movie is an amazing representation of the beautiful rural land that our families have settled in for decades. i camped at lake jocassee last year in autumn and it was the best camping experience i've ever had. having representation in the public media for my home county (pickens) is amazing, and the film is a disturbing and uncomfortable watch, but it's one of the best horror movies i've ever seen, genuinely scaring the shit out of me! i need to revisit the gorge soon and take better photos, the park was closing since it was sunset and we had to get back before dark. definitely a gem, the pictures don't do it justice with how high up they were taken. the overlooks are sickeningly high up
