                   What was she laughing about, and even giving her a ridiculous pet name of her own! Miffed by the strange older being’s remark, Manji’s tail bristles from her under her karaginu, turning her head to the side as a sneeze erupts for her mouth. She covers it in embarrassment, turning to give Hikari an unpleasant look.

      "I doubt it," was the fox’s muffled comment as another sneeze made way from her long sleeves.

          Covering her mouth with a gloved hand, Hikari let out another giggle. The fox could be rather... cute. She didn't dare say this out loud though, for fear of insulting her new companion. She wouldn't say friend just yet, but... who knows what could happen.

          "Ah? Isn't it more fun to be with people?" Hikari shifted her bag over her shoulder. "I always think so..." She looked around the landscape, before tilting her gaze up to the sky. "Do you want to walk, or look for shelter for the night?"

             "I suppose so, Riki," Humming with an obnoxious voice, the kitsune’s tail swayed lesiurely as she huffed. "If we travled together I would die from the cold." Manji snuffed in a matter of fact tone, "But I would die regardless without help since the trail home is gone. Do what you will."

"Riki?" For the first time, Hikari was taken aback. A nickname? She has never been given a nickname before. Most of her companions just called her by her full name... still...

"I'm sure we'll have fun together, Mugi." Hikari gave the fox a nickname too, thinking it cute. She stifled a giggle, her fist covering her mouth. "I can help you navigate this, place, though it might take a while. You managed to wander fairly far."

                 "As figured, no wonder you reek of flesh and snow." Manji makes a distasteful look, turning to sniff the air from the West. The kitsune quickly picked up the rest of the scraps from Hikari’s skinning, eating it all piece by piece from being straved for so long, ears flopping from a well earned meal.

        "For now, you may call me Komugi (小麦).” the demon chirps, licking her bloodied fingers lazily before playing with her dark locks. The old hag may be kind enough to be honest for her name, but Manji knew other wise to put trust in whatever creature she’s mixed with.

              "Is that all, mutt?"

          "Its nice to meet you, Miss Komugi. Not many demons fare into this area."

          A large friendly smile finally appeared on Hikari's lips. She watched the fox with earnest fascination, once again letting the sharp words wash over her calmly. She played with the hem of her skirt, humming and looking around. They were rather deep in the tundra...

          "Would you like to travel together?" HIkari questioned. "Maybe you could like some help navigating this place, and my journeys are always more enjoyable when I have a companion."

             Shifting back into human form, the fox licked up the trailing bood on her hands, swallowing up left over meat hanging from her teeth.

                   "I was never the politest person with foul stinking breeds like yourself, so maybe your name first, grandma." Names were never just for show and tell, it was enough to destroy lives and places you lived; something Manji had watched in the past.

          "I suppose I should tell you my name first then?" Hikari tried to decide if she wanted to bring back the rabbit hide. Maybe someone could use it, she supposed... She started skinning the rabbit of what she could salvage.

          "My name is Hikari." The half elf wasn't afraid of sharing her name. "I used to live in here, before I was with humans."

              Manji paid no mind to the girl’s talk, eating ot her heart’s content and pulls the dead corpse over to the girl, barking again. She had paid her part, but asking for a name in return as payment? 

   "Cheeky cheeky," The fox purred out, using her hind foot to relieve the itch behind her ears. "Why should I give such information to one such as you?" Her eyes pierced through the half human, challenging her answer to be pleasing or she could say goodbye to the pact they’ve made.

          "Is it not common to exchange names? Do demons such as yourself ignore such simple customaries?"

           The pale elf rested her elbow on her knee as she crouched, her cheek resting against the heel of her palm as she used her other hand to investiagte the rabbit corpse. Her pale lips, tinted blue from the cold, showed a the tiniest of frowns, expressing her disdain for the state the fur was in.

          "Survival in these parts is dependant on making friends, not enemies." Hikari's words were conversational, though they held a hint of caution in them. "Not many survive out here alone."

          More and more the half human rambled, causing Manji to slip into her much smaller fox form to prepare for the meal ahead of her. The place her eyes set targets on once her guide pointed to the frigid bush a good feet away. The hare seemed to be grazing on sprouted grass in the snow, alert from the sounds of the snow as it looked in their direction. Luckily the hare had only noticed the girl as her paws quietly slipped into the snow.

                She watches the hare, paws clawing as soft as possible as her tail flattened at the closest proximeter to attack the prey. Ears listen ing toto the munches resume as the kitsune stepped ever so closer to the hare. Without warning, the hare dashed out of the bush, allowing Manji to speed after it the best she could.  

        She made a quick leap of faith to the soon to be dinner, snapping her jaws tightly around its bac enough to make it still, ending its life quickly to not cause any pain. The demon spat the hare out, chirping at the half human watching the scene as her snout returned back to the kill, teeth tearing messily in.

          Watching quietly as the fox girl snatched her prey, hikai shifted into her bag, taking out  dagger, the blade carved and decorated and the hilt plain. She once again crouched down, wincing as the fox tore up the hare.

          "Ah, be careful, I want the fur to be salvageable..." It looked like that wasn't going to happen though, as the fox kept sinking it sharp teeth into the meet and bones, tearing up it skin.

          Still, Hikari watched curiously, hands on her knees.

          "Miss Fox, What is your name?"

"Enough prattle mutt, and show me the way." The smaller girl stood, watching every movement her now shady ally did in order to not be caught off guard. Manji raised her hand, a soft green glow of fire drying off the wetness of the snow pattered on her robes enough to not feel chillded and sniffs her sensitive nose.  

"You reek of distasteful weeds as well. No matter, let me feast before I consume you."

           Blue eyes watched the fire with awe. It was the polar opposite of herself, so she was always amazed by those who could conjure the warm flames. She waited Patiently for the fox girl to ready herself, hands clasped behind her back.

           "You have a fine sense of smell." Hikari lips twitched up into a smile. "Though I suppose that is no surprise."

           Boots crunching through the fresh powder, Hikari turned, and began walking, keen eyes searching for any signs of movement. Like herself, many of the animals blended well into the landscape, hiding themselves in plain sight, camouflaged by nature.

           "I have no real need for eating meat." Hikari spotted footprints, almost hidden by the falling snow, and followed them. "Sometimes I will indulge myself, but I find the tastes of greens more satisfying."

           Crouching down, Hikari spotted something in a frozen bush, and she pointed to it.

           "There is one. Be careful. Holding it to long while it's alive and it will give you frostbite. Creatures here are rather crafty."

       "…Fine." The demon coldly spit out, aggitated that a feeble being such as this half breed would be the one to calm her hunger. "But know this, if you so much to dare and lie to me, sweet or not I will devour you piece by piece." Her pride as a stable huntress felt a bit broken in, as her head bowed in defeat. This girl should be thankful that the great kitsune, Manji, from the great orange plains of Miroku had spared her life. Though great kitsune was a bit of a stretch. More like feeble and lazy Manji from the orange plains of Miroku was fitting.

“Lead me away, mutt.”

          The smile on her pale lips grew more genuine, and she pushed herself up on her feet, boots sinking a few inches into the snow. She pat her skirt, brushing of the layers of snow that had gathered.

          "...I assume you... only eat meat, correct?" Hikari tucked a lock of hair behidn her slight pointed ears. Hikari herself didn't each meat, or at least she tried not to, but this fox probably wouldn't eat the native plants that grew here.

          "Maybe we can find some hares... I can use the fur after you eat."

           The opposing meal  held her ground, something the kitsune had disliked about her prey when they tried to reason with her. Except this girl was too kind for her own good. It would make her stomach churn from disgust. She growled in failure, allowing the mixed breed to inche closer within reason.

    "Are your eyes as dumb as you behave, mutt? I am a fox demon, hungry for flesh." Manji snaps out. She begins to move, eyeing the defenseless prey in a circle as she drawls out more, "I’d eat you if to end this useless prattle, but your flesh would prove to be a hassle than a prize."

        Plopping down at a relative distance, she returns to her human form, blank and disapproving.

"Tell me, why should I let you live for now, half human."

          "...you won't find much to eat here."

          Her voice was soft, watching the fox circle her. She brought her hands together, setting them on her lap as she knelt in the white powdery snow. She wasn't put off by the creatures attitude. Most demons Hikari had met were not very pleasant. Especially the ones that ate humans.

          Watching, she was vaguely surprised when the fox turned into a human girl. This calmed the half elf, even though she wasn't in any less danger.

          "The only even people here are the elves on top of the mountain, and they would kill you before you even made it halfway up."

          "...if you wish, I could help you find food here. It won't be human flesh, but maybe it can satisfy you."

        The beast tilts her head to the side, ears alert and cautious as she plops closer to the scared girl. Ears too long for her face, like a rabbits, and pale as snow skin…

           ”Hurt me? You needn’t worry about that, child. What you should worry about is your life between my claws.” She grins, licking her nose to sniff at the scared figure. “Tell me, despite you being older than I am, what made you stink of human strongly. Are you a demon?”

          "I-I..." Hikari lowered her hands, clasping them in her front. Falling back on her bottom, Hikari swallowed, hands propped up behind her. It wasn't strange for animals to talk. Many demons took the form of animals, whether for survival or for hunting.

          "I am no demon..." She was cautious, on edge. It was true she had encountered demons before, but it was still best to approach such creatures with discretion.

          Her voice was small, but curious, and the pale girl leaned forward to the fox. "You can smell... it?" Her gloved fingers twitched. "I am... half human."

          "Tell me, what are you?"

            The scream was easy to shrug off, her form shifting from pale skin to extremely orange fur, mouth snapping into a large snout as her bark echoed to the girl. To her slight surprise, dull sheen of translucent blue spouted from the frost, ready to slam into her face first if she didn’t take action. Barely turning to her her side, the impact to slam into the ice was a touch painful. 

              Manji collasped to the ground, springing back up immediantely with fangs bared. Talking would through her off, it would be better to use that tactic for last as she took off to reach over the freezing sleet and attack once more. She was extremely hungry, and if she didn’t eat, it would be a shameful defeat of wailing back to the plains.

          Able to see a shift from behind the sheet of ice, Hikari let her shield melt into the ground, becoming one with the snow. She backed up, pushing herself with her legs, watching the creature. She was able to recognize it: a red fox. Hikari briefly wondered what such a fox was doing here, but crawled onto her knees.

          "A-ah! Wait..." Hikari held her hands up in a passive gesture, but she was ready to defend herself again if she should. Her eyes were wide, and she was chewing on her bottom lip.

          "I-its okay!" She tried pleading. "J-just... i-its okay. I-I won't hurt you..."

                Even more strange, Manji had thought, as no human would be able to relax so leisurely in winds fierce as these. Perhaps the woman was a snow woman of sorts, easily able to defy the winter’s howling. No matter, dinner is dinner, and perhaps her resistance to snow will lessen from the flesh of a demon as such.

Sneaking closer to the girl, Manji sniffed the air closer and lessened her presence to the willow figured girl. Of human and demon it seems. Manji’s lips quivered in surprise, peeking up from the billow of snow to watch her even more thoroughly. Perhaps eating her would be easier than originally palnned.

'No matter, things will start from here,' the kitsune quipped, springing up from the snow with jaws ready to bite.

          Quickly, Hikari put her journal away, only writing quick notes about the plants she saw at the base of the mountain. She held her traveling sack in her lap, curling her knees up to her chest. She was tired, not as alert as she might have normally been. The packed snow crunched under her hands and feet, and she looked up at the forever cloudy sky.

          Still, it seemed the snow would alert her itself. She heard an unfamiliar shift in the snow, one not made by her, and turned her head, just in time to see something, something that didn't belong here, lunge at her.

          With a scream, Hikari threw her hands over her head, and up from the ground at her side sprung a wall of ice, following the arc of her arm as she held it trembling above her head. She couldn't get a good look, but just by the colors, she knew this creature didn't belong here, not in this pale white world. Something so vibrant could never have been born here.

                       "A child that smells of winter and flesh, how unsual." Manji mumbled through the snow, taking shelter a good distance from the girl in the mountains. She has never smelled this scent from this far up before the kistune mused, shaking the frost from her thin hair from inside the hollow of the tree.  Would she be a decent meal, or an interesting friend?

     Regardless, the fox eared woman yawned as quiet as possible, sneaking out from the dried bark to observe her prey more in motion.

          Ah, she felt so at home here. The constant storm and snow, the frozen winds whipping harshly at your skin, to most this place would probably be a nightmare. But to her it was filled with a sense of childhood nostalgia and an aura of peace and tranquility.

          She could never go far up the mountain. She wanted too, looking up as it tipped into the clouds, letting out a visible breath. Sometimes she had to come back to her homeland - for herbs, or animals only found there, or just to quench her longing of somehow, someway being back home.

          Hikari sighed, a little warn out from her journey. She had scaled as much as she dared too and came back down the mountain in one day. As she laid against a tree, blending in almost seamless to the wind and snow herself, Hikari dug out a tiny journal, and began scribbling in it.
