once upon a time rpc and race.

with  the  new  arc  ,  there  opens  up  even  more  of  a  room  for  characters  of  color  to  shine  .  i  mean  ,  i  appreciate  the  fact  that t here  is  an  increase  in  women  of  color  (  and  while  i  think  there  needs  to  be  more  woc  and  more  moc  it’s... good for  ed  and  adam  considering  who  they  are )  .  but  there’s  also  the  issue  of  portraying  them  accurately  . 

if  there’s  magic  why  should  race  or  culture  come  into  play  ? 

that’s  a  great  question  !  that’s  why  i  brought  up  the  new  arc  .  ella  and  regina  are  from  magical  realms  where  their  latina  background  may  not  come  into  effect  .   but  when  they’re  not  ella  and  regina  ,  when  they’re  jacinda  and  roni  ,  i’m  going  to  assume  they definitely  do  . because... y’know... life .  and  it’s  the  same  for  tiana  .  tiana  may  not  have  a  different  background  because  of  where  she’s  from  (  which  makes  no  sense  because  her  background  lies  in  new  orleans  but  whatever )  but  sabine  definitely  has  different  experiences  because  of  her  race  .    this  is  the  same  for  mulan  but  since  there  aren’t  a lot  of  mulans   ( hm )  i’ll stick to those  three  .  

dania  ramirez  is  dominican  .  meaning  ,  she  has  dominican  roots  .  meaning  ,  she  doesn’t  have  puerto  rican  roots  .  her  culture  is  not bbased  in  cuba  or  mexico  or  guatemala .  because  while  these  all  fall under  hispanic  countries  ,  they  have  very  very  different  foods  and  cultures  and  even  slang  .  i’m  cuban  and  i  definitely  don’t  have  the  same  accent  or  use  the  same  type  of  spanish  as  my  dominican  friends  .  

it’s  the  same  thing  for  lana  .  she’s  puerto  rican  and  italian  .  being  a mixed  ,  whiteish  passing  latina woman has  its  own  background  and  experiences  that  you  should  probably  research  before  you  dive  ass  first  into  writing  a  character  with  the background  .  

and  with  mekia  ,  you  need  to  take  into  consideration  the  experience  she  faces  as  a  black  woman  without  making  that  the  only  thing  about  her  .  how  will her  interactions  change  ?  how  will her  life  change  ? 

it’s  good  there’s  an  increase  in  characters  of  color  .  i  love  it  .  but  if  you’re  going  to  half ass it  then  don’t  write  them  at  all  .
