do i… emotionally… support communists….?
im thinking
tiktok is actually the worst place ever bc its a bunch of young lgbt teens running around with absolutely no knowledge historical context or queer theory saying shit like “once i was called a d*ke in 7th grade therefore i think all lgbt ppl should be able to reclaim it” and theres no way to explain these extremely nuanced and complicated pieces of lgbt history in the 2 sentences ur allowed to type. so u just keep scrolling.
Yes most of the live stream has been brought out of proportion but the sow joke is another hurtful joke in a long line of the crews wrongs specifically their representation of poc. Mara's whitewashed character design and racist storyline (brown girl dies so/whilst white girl has a happy ending) is just one example. I can't accurately describe the impact of the sow joke but if you'd like to educated yourself azzylon explains it really well (also being gay does not exempt you from racism)
Alright I would like to point out that I never said being gay didn’t make me racist, just as being any minority doesn’t mean someone can’t be homophobic.
And I did read the Azzylon post, I found that it reached. Saying that the joke was as bad and on the same level as black face? Saying that drawing a black man as a farmer was making a slave joke? I’m sorry but I can’t see that.
I’m white but there gets to a point when people are over reacting. It was a bad joke and she apologized. Has she made mistakes? Yes! Do those mistakes deserve to be called out? Yes! Does Noelle Stevenson deserve to have hate poured on her and be cancelled or have any future She Ra stuff taken from her? Nope
@she-ra-cat-ra also made this post here and said:
I didn’t say it wasn’t racist but you do know that there are levels to this kind of thing right? No one in the crew meant to harm anyone but I realize harm can be unintended. Do I think anyone ever thought that the joke was racist? No. Do I think people have a right to being upset about it even though no one meant the joke to be taken that way? Yes. Do I think it’s an overreach to say that the joke links back to Black Face, Minstrel Shows, and over forms of racist media? Yes because it is. None of them were even hinted in the show. Not one line. How can it be a call back to all that when it hadn’t even made it to air? Again she didn’t draw a picture of a happy slave, she drew a line up of Bow’s brothers who had pun names, one of which happened to be Sow. A tasteless joke? sure. One that she apologized for. I’m not going to ‘stay in my lane’ when people are taking something way out of context in an effort to cancel a lesbian showrunner who fought very hard to get a popular show with lesbian lead. Do I think Noelle Stevenson is the greatest person ever and can’t do wrong? No, I’ve said that a million times now. Do I think she’s trying? Yes and that’s more than what I can say for most. She can do better and I hope that she does.
and then this post here:
But that post was drawing lines that didn’t need to be drawn. The happy slave is a real trope, it’s an awful part of history and I can understand why people would think about that trope when having a black man dressed as a farmer with the name Sow. Nothing in context was about him being a slave. Nothing at all that hinted that was EVER a thought in anyone’s mind. Nothing at all that the crew thought of any of Bow’s brothers as real characters, they were clearly a gag. Anger is understandable when someone messes up. The level of anger here? It isn’t. I’ve seen people posting that they don’t have anything to do with Noelle Stevenson anymore, that they want She Ra taken away from her, that Noelle must have lied about wanting more PoC in She Ra…. etc.
Normally I would block and disengage with this, but I felt the need to respond because you used my name in these posts and put them in my tag.
1. I have been dealing with white people all day long telling me I’m stupid, wrong, blowing things out of proportion, overreacting, that I’m “reaching” etc. (Reaching is hilarious, because that is AAVE that you are trying to weaponize against me, a Black person.)
That is so far out of your lane, as a white person, I’m honestly stunned you posted this and used my name in it. What you did is called racial gaslighting, and it’s absolutely unacceptable. You have absolutely no right to tell me how to feel about issues that affect me as a Black woman.
2. You are putting words in my mouth, taking my post in 100% the worst faith possible and creating a straw man at the same time. You missed the point. I did not say the joke was on the same level as blackface. If you needed clarification on my post, you could have asked instead of making things up that I did not say.
3. Not once have I ever told people to cancel anyone or find anything offensive. I literally said these words in my post: “Both of these situations assume that Noelle wasn’t being explicitly racist, which I believe to be true, but do not absolve Noelle of their harmful impact to Black people, which is fair.”
I am completely aware that LGBT+ creators are held to impossibly high standards, and in fact wrote a Twitter thread on it. We can still hold LGBT+ creators accountable for implicit racism and anti-Blackness. Also, so not cool to accuse me, a bi person, of purposefully attacking a lesbian creator when you wrote that.
I have been nothing but calm, polite, and civil with anyone who interacts with me, because I know what happens to Black women when anyone perceives us to be mean. And to assume I have been aggressive or calling for people to be canceled is incredibly anti-Black. I will not tolerate anyone projecting aggression onto me when there is none.
Maybe you should go and read Rae’s apology, because they specifically said:
“I’m going to put this right up top here so you don’t gloss over it. LET BLACK PEOPLE SPEAK. I don’t want to see a single fan stepping in and explaining or minimizing or arguing on anyone else’s behalf, whether its for me or Noelle or anybody else. Let people who are hurt talk and explain why they’re hurting, or even just unproductively vent their feelings with no end goal. People have every single right to voice when something’s hurt them, and quite frankly NONE of you have any right to speak for or in defense of me. Its counterproductive and disrespectful to both me and people who are speaking out about their problems. This behavior does not help anyone and only serves to confuse the conversation, not to mention gaslight and endlessly frustrate and antagonize BIPOC people, right NOW, in the biggest active American civil rights crisis of our lives. I cannot stress this enough. Let people speak.”
I am also calling directly on any fans who have done any bootlicking in defense of internet strangers or a cartoon just because you like them in order to minimize the feelings of real black people on this topic to fully stop talking, delete your posts, and pick a charity or fund benefiting BIPOC to donate to as well. If you’ve eaten up any POC’s time directly arguing with them on this topic in any way, send THEM money if they’ll take it. I am absolutely not kidding, and I think its the least you can do.
I get that you’re angry and defensive because there was a ton of misinformation going on, but to go and do that same thing to me is so hurtful.
Update: @she-ra-cat-ra saw this and proceeded to make fun of the way I typed because I… bolded something? Anyway, they called this post “disc horse” and that leads me to believe they are quite young in which case I’ll just block and move on.
(Please don’t send them asks on my behalf.) I am truly above this kind of behavior and will not think about this person ever again because I try not to focus on irrelevancy. Tbh, I am so jaded to entitled white people at this point, it’s become very easy to shrug it off.
As an aside, I think it’s interesting that white “stans” of She-Ra like this person act this way to Black people, when the creators of the show absolutely condemn that.
Also, I am just going to start bolding things randomly.

I’ve seen the complaints about the She-Ra panel and here are the parts in the stream so you can watch/listen to them in context:

Ngl seeing so many white people use this to try to prove how woke they are and paint Noelle as the sole problematic one is really rubbing me the wrong way. We should absolutely hold Noelle accountable and criticise them, but this should really be a moment for white allies to analyse and reflect on their own racism and anti-blackness. Cause if they think this couldn't have easily been them or they haven't pulled racially insensitive comments like that before too, they're only fooling themselves.
i get that some of u white allies want to be supportive, but i think some of u are also going a little bit too overboard? like the things some of u are saying run along the lines of “she ra is cancelled forever!!!!! horrible worst show!!!!! if u like it ur a demon!!!!!!” and like. that kind of invalidates some of the feelings fans of color are having? i think y’all should focus on just listening and uplifting voices of color, mostly black voices on this issue. like it’s not ur place as a white person to decide that Everyone needs to stop liking she-ra now Or Else nor is it your place to stop poc from being upset. just focus on self-reflection and educate yourself. of course if any black she-ra fans or fans of color wanna completely denounce the show, that’s fine, that’s perfectly fine, if you followed me for she-ra and now want she-ra out of your life, i completely understand u wanting to cut me off too. but white people shouldn’t be leading these discussions or conversations at all, so keep that in mind
also yes i think people are putting this all on noelle in a way that’s a little bit... confusing? because i get that they were she-ra’s showrunner but this whole thing wasn’t Just them. and they didn’t have As much power as people think they did and also the show is over now? it’s not like they were forcing those other white people to be racist. and i think there are a lot more people we should be criticizing too, and i think some of she-ra’s white writers deserve more criticism than noelle, actually, and are taking even less action to hold themselves accountable for things they have perpetuated
also some of u are mad that noelle didn’t shut down the cishet white male host for saying the d slur. and i get that but also i think about. what if someone said a racial slur like one targeted at asian people, in front of me, because it was part of the name for like an asian show. would i be able to tell them not to say it? i would feel v put on the spot. so i don’t think i can personally feel mad at noelle about that. idk. also there were so many people there why is it noelle’s job to do the calling out just because she’s a lesbian? like if you wouldn’t hold Me responsible for calling out people using anti-asian slurs why not extend that to lesbians re the d slur u know? but yeah it’s just. a thought i have. i’m not trying to defend noelle like maybe they just didn’t care but it made me think
