the great thing about being completely off your rocker when you commit to the plan to fake-yet-not-really-fake torture your friends for a prank is that it never goes through like you want. sure, he didn’t think ashley would ever talk to him again, and chris probably wouldn’t by-proxy. sam was a bit of a toss up, and mike seemed to feel too bad about leaving him down there to die to want to come around. matt seemed to want to see how he was doing, but was too busy making sure emily was alright. but jess- he hadn’t done anything to her! he hadn’t! yeah, he had cameras set up in that cabin to humiliate them, but they weren’t even set up right. they were the last thing he did, and apparently he was a little fucked by then. but– but that means she isn’t as mad, right? and– and no matter what mike said, he did not hurt her. he’s so sure that he’d remember that. so so sure.

but when she walked in he as still anxious. he as a little scared, afraid maybe she’s mad anyways. maybe the others already got to her so she’s just mad and came to hit him! he wouldn’t blame her. okay, yeah he would– he was like the prime instigator in everything and he didn’t even go after her first! damn ! but, instead, he takes a deep breath. (okay, it’s a normal breath, but feels deep with the shallow breaths he’s been taking with his broken ass ribs). “ i– hey. it’s– it’s good to see you. ”

jess had quickly become accustomed to the hospital, people in white coats and blue scrubs scurrying around sterile walls. her injuries from the mountain had been extensive with several broken ribs, a fractured ankle and a concussion to name a few major causes to her long stay and repeated check ups. it was one of the only other places she had come to since the mountain, jess otherwise staying secluded in the safety of her home. she had been on her way for another check up, her mother driving her while jessica sat on the passenger seat, knees up and her body engulfed in a sweater as she stared out the window when she heard the radio host speak, “--it has been several days since josh washington has been found. one of 8 survivors up at the---“ her mother had shut off the radio abruptly, something about stress and not having her worry.

the next time she’s in though, jess walks over to the receptionist asking about him and she’s given his room number. she tugs the sleeves of her sweater further down as she approaches his room, her fingers tucking behind them as she licks her lips. she doesn’t know what she expects to find, maybe a mirror image of what she had looked like after she came out of the mines or maybe he would be completely unrecognizable. she certainly felt unrecognizable to herself. her brows furrow as her eyes roam over him and he looks rough, half of his face bandaged up and his complexion paler than she remembered it, although that could have been the fluorescents of the room. underneath it all though, jess could still recognize him. her mouth runs dry, all the words and thoughts dissipating into the air like smoke. there she was, miss jessica riley with nothing to say. ( say something, be a normal human being! ) there’s a long beat before she finally speaks. “you’re alive.” her voice comes out hoarser than she expects, jessica clearing her throat. “I heard over the radio they found you” jessica looks around the empty room. “has anyone else come to see you?”
