Terrence was way better with the puppy eyes.
It suited him so well.
“I care because, uh… um…” Henry didn’t know why he cared so much. But it mattered to him. What she thought of him meant something to Henry. He wanted her to hate him, but he didn’t want her to laugh at him. He wanted to talk to her. “…Why do you wanna go inside so bad, huh? What’s so great about in there? What do they have? Fake flowers and twinkly Christmas lights? Well, out here, we have real-life twinkly Christmas lights! Er, uh, stars, we have stars. Twinkly real-life stars. A-and they have fake flowers? We have real ones! And, and, uh… we have real trees, not fake-o painted wood ones! Well, trees are wood, but, uh… Oh! I brought my iPod! We can listen to anything we want! That’s way better than a preset playlist made by some douche with expensive headphones! Come on, it’s nice out here! And your aunt will come pick us up, and we can go home and snuggle instead.”
“Well...” Terrence said. Henry wasn’t wrong, and it really was kind of nice out here, but he would still much rather be inside and at least go to prom for at least a few minutes. The offer of just going home and snuggling instead was very tempting, though. Maybe they could compromise. “...Could we just go inside for a minute? Just dance to one song, maybe? Come on, Henry, what could possibly go wrong in just a minute?” Terrence asked. “Gail probably won’t even know you’re here. ...Of course, if she doesn’t see you here at all, she’ll probably think you chickened out,” He added. Maybe that would get Henry inside, since he only seemed to care about what Gail thought anyway.

“But Terrence…” Henry whined, lifting his head up and giving his friend the best puppy eyes he could. He wanted to go inside, he really did. He wasn’t sure he wanted to stay long, but he did want to steal snacks and at the very least see what Gail’s labor had produced. Maybe she’d been right, maybe it would look better in the dark. Or maybe he could nag her later about the fact that her garlands still weren’t straight. And he couldn’t say no to a chance to see Gail and the other girls dolled up all cute and sparkly. It would be nice. But he couldn’t. He couldn’t! Knowing she was in there, waiting for him to show up and make a fool of himself again? Waiting to see what his secret master plan had been, even though he never actually managed to think of one?! It was unbearable!! “I’m not good at this stuff! And she admitted that she went off and laughed about me to her boyfriend already! And he told her that I’m gay! Which, I mean, makes some sense– But they probably laughed about it! Did I tell you she kicked me today? In the balls. For no reason!”
“But Henry,” Terrence replied, pointedly ignoring Henry’s puppy eyes. He knew they never worked, and yet he still tried them anyway. Terrence still didn’t know exactly what Henry had done to get himself into so much trouble. He wasn’t sure he believed that Gail just hated him for no reason- even if she was a bitch, Henry had probably given her a reason. Terrence did know, however, that it was cold, it was dark, and this was most certainly not the date Henry had promised him. “What aren’t you good at? Going inside? Why do you care so much if Gail is laughing? And why do you care so much that her boyfriend told her you’re gay? I mean, we’re dating now, so... you pretty much are,” Terrence said. “...Okay, I’m pretty sure she probably had a reason to kick you. But I’m also pretty sure she won’t do it again if we run into her inside!” He added, giving Henry the best puppy eyes he could muster himself.

“Nope. Not goin’, Terry. This was a stupid idea, I regret it, I’m sorry. But she’s in there! Having a good time, dancing, laughing– probably laughing about me, Terry!” Henry said, burying his face in his knees. This was stupid. Everything was stupid. Well, Terrence wasn’t he stupid, but almost everything else was.
Henry didn’t know how this all could’ve gone so horribly wrong. This was supposed to be fun! But now he too scared to even step foot inside for fear of ridicule. He’d even made Terrence act gay for him! All for nothing! All he was now was cold, sad, and partially alone.
“Did you call your aunt back yet? Can she come pick us up?” Henry asked, not bothering to lift his head. He pulled his legs up closer to his body, making himself as small as possible.
“Come on, Henry. Do you seriously think she doesn’t have anything better to do with her prom night than laugh about you?” Terrence asked. “I mean, she’s probably dancing with her boyfriend or whatever. You know, the one you thought was probably going to kill you?” This was getting ridiculous. After all the trouble Henry had gone to over Gail, he was just going to give up now? Because he was worried she would laugh? “...Why do you care so much if she laughs, anyway? I mean, who cares about Gail, right? At least you have me... right?”
“No, I didn’t call her back yet... are you sure you don’t want to go inside? Not even for a minute? ...Not even just to wait for my aunt to get here? It’s kind of cold out here,” Terrence said. If Henry wanted to sit on the floor and be miserable, he might as well do it inside. At least they wouldn’t freeze. And maybe if they went inside, Henry would decide that sticking around to join the party for a few minutes wouldn’t be so bad....

Ever since Henry had sent him the text message explaining that he was in deep trouble and Terrence had to be his boyfriend immediately, Terrence had been looking forward to nothing more than the upcoming prom night. He supposed he should feel a little guilty for not really caring about the circumstances that had led to this. But then, he was still just surprised that after all his agonizing over it, in the end, Henry had asked him instead of the other way around.
Although, his excitement had been slightly dampened when they reached the school and Henry seemed extremely reluctant to actually go inside. Instead, they were still standing outside on the pavement, squashed together under Henry’s jacket to try and escape the early-spring chill. The sounds of the ongoing party inside were clearly audible even out here, and as the night dragged on and only got colder, it was only getting more grating. “So, Henry,” Terrence said. “It sure sounds like everybody else is having a good time....”
TERRENCE: 1 new TXT from: HENRY

Terrence: I don't care how many hearts you send me, I am not budging on this one.
Terrence: Come on we're not even really dating yet isn't one pet name enough for now?
