One of the happiest nights I’ve had this summer was being able to pull out my tablet and paint a portrait of a good friend. I hadn’t made any sort of painting in a long time, so it felt good to reconnect with seeing and translating into lines and color.

Protective mechanism – To tickle the head with a smile in the buttonhole and laying in ruffled scattered flowers which never wither – just getting spots maybe a blind one – lurking for the winking reflex who spit the foreign body out of the warm inside – subdue the arrhythmia – we have to protect us – for everything and everyone.

These are microapartments in Japan…which is funny because this basically looks like the set-up and size of my dorm room here in good old Texass.

“It was a new type of architecture that attempted to overcome the problems that plagued traditional urban planning,” says Noritaka Minami, a photographer who has studied and documented the tower. Its 140 capsule units are very small–just over 100-square feet each–and very modular. The plan was to replace the “capsules” themselves every 25 years: a new, flexible way to accommodate the rising Japanese economy. “It had a very specific intent that it was going to serve a certain clientele: businessmen who needed an urban home during the week,” says Minami. “In a way, it didn’t necessarily follow his original intent.”
