I was emotional. Seeing the devastation that Katrina caused hit me hard. It broke my heart to see families lose their loved ones. I can hardly believe this year marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The images from that devastating day are still fresh, the after-math and repercussions from the storm, still very real. This tragedy affected our entire nation. As a resident of Georgia at the time, we experienced the wrath of the storm with some physical damage but more so with the displacement of people affected from the storm. People seeking shelter, supplies and hope that our community readily embraced but it was not nearly enough to buffer the effects of the storm.

I was recently in New Orleans for a graduate school trip, drawn there precisely because of Katrina and Sandy and a curiosity about life after the storm. One of our assignments was to investigate the mental health resources in New Orleans and design an advocacy and intervention program for the people of our host city. What I learned was that for all of the shiny new buildings and sweet music coming from Jazz clubs that signaled restoration and rebuild, the devastation is still very present in many of the people of that city and the many others who may still be away after being displaced that August after the storm. There were as many as 5,000 children separated from their families after Hurricane Katrina. For some, it took months to be reunited and you can be sure even those who were separated for hours felt that trauma and may still recognize it today.

As the emergency crews set in and tried to clean up the mess that was left behind, another horror materialized. Along with all the flooded and ruined homes, buildings and schools, there were over 1,800 people dead and countless missing. For those who were unable to evacuate the storm and stayed, many families were separated and over 5,000 children were missing. It took seven months to connect the last child with her parents. It was every parent’s worst nightmare and even more tragically, as a nation ten years later we are still not prepared.

Save the Children has been working with the children affected by Hurricane Katrina for the last decade. After Hurricane Katrina, 5000 children were reported missing. It took weeks, and even months, to reunited these children with their parents. After Katrina, The National Commission on Children and Disasters made recommendations on keeping America’s children safe during a disaster. Ten years later, 79% of these recommendations have yet to be addressed.

I actually had a nightmare about a similar situation. Back when I was still working full time and my kids went to a sitter, I had a dream that a massive tornado ripped through our area. Of course, in the dream, I was trying to run and couldn’t move, but most importantly, I could not connect with my children.

Most school aged children spend a good chunk of the day outside the house, separated from their parents. It’s how our society works, how kids grow up and learn. Some of the most heartbreaking stories of loss involved children that were separated from parents who were nearly impossible to locate because of the chaos, destroyed homes and mass re-locations.

This summer, during the height of the hurricane season Save the Children wants parents and their children to be prepared should disaster strike again. Save the Children is imploring parents to make sure their children have an emergency contact card with not only information for local family, but also family who live out of town. This is critically important because during disasters local networks and telephones lines are usually down. Being able to call family who are not affected by a storm is important to connect children back to families.

When my children were small I made sure they knew phone numbers for me and for their grandparents in case they needed to call in an emergency. We also had a designated meeting spot in case they had to get out of the house because of a fire or intruder. If there was a tornado, they knew to get in the bathtub. I taught them when with friends "if you see a gun, run." They also knew how to dial 911.
