Lydia Villa-Komaroff (b. 1947) is a Mexican-American molecular biologist. She is a founding member of SACNAS, The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science.

She completed her PhD in cell biology at MIT in 1975, and later was part of the team that discovered how bacteria could generate insulin. In 1996 she started working for Northwestern Unviersity and became its Vice President for Research.

One year ago, a car rammed into counter-protesters during a violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va. Dozens of people were injured and paralegal and activist Heather Heyer was killed. Now, her mother is trying to fulfill a promise made at her funeral.

“They tried to kill my child to shut her up,” Susan Bro told mourners last August. “Well, guess what? You just magnified her!”

Susan Bro now spends her days in a cozy office at the law firm where her daughter worked as a paralegal. It’s the headquarters of the Heather Heyer Foundation. Near her desk is a sign with her daughter’s favorite motto – “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”

“I think that’s what we have with Heather’s legacy is a call to action,” says Bro.

This one dates back a way to the late 1990s. A friend of mine had a small flat as accommodation, partly subsidized by the university he studied at. There were about 20 flats at this location, and they were built in pairs, so everyone shared a wall and roof with their neighbor.

My friend’s neighbor was a mess of a kid I’ll call M who came into second year uni having barely scraped through the first and spent just about all his available time with loud music, smoking, and getting drunk with friends over.
