Socialmon - Evolve virtual pets by being active on facebook

Socialmon is the virtual pet for the social media generation.

How it works is simple, the more you post on facebook the bigger your socialmon grows. Like tamagotchis of old - Socialmon are cute virtual pet monsters that live on your phone. The more one Interacts with their Socialmon or feeds them the happier they are. Do this consistently and your Socialmon will evolve as well as grow.

You can battle other Socialmon to gain gold that can be used to complete quests or purchase Nom packs, containing monster food. Monster food have various hidden effects.

The battle system is simple and is all about hitting the centre of a meter. If you have been feeding your pet you have the option of aiming for the food items to get stat buffs. 

Socialmon is the only virtual pet app that rewards  you for being active on Facebook.

A seed-shaped creature, will it grow up to be a plant monster, or a giant potato dude? The answer I have for Doran, is neither. It becomes a proud warrior monster. Many creatures are especially weak-looking in their infancy, and I think nature has always intended such so that they can be nurtured.

Romus is based off the firebird, a majestic creature of mythology. We tend to think of the Greek phoenix at the mention of firebirds, but other cultures have an equivalent, such as the Chinese Fenghuang or the Persian Simurgh. I once read a story where the firebird was inspired by an extinct, real life colourful bird that became the symbol of rebirth. But most people prefer the bigger-than-life versions of a story as it is much more exciting and memorable.

The Greek Cyclops and ogres from many cultures are quite often lumped together over a long era of mutations in fiction. I gave Yurmo here pale-coloured hair, as one would see in modern Japanese animation works. We live in a time of plenty, where cultures have blended from multiple sources.

Two heads are better than one, three heads are better than two, or so the sayings go. Tatato's idea explores the many ways to create a multi-headed totem monster. Each head gets smaller in this design, perhaps a different totem monster would be closer to the original wooden ones.

Bochic is directly derived from the mythical cockatrice, a monster that's basically half-rooster and half-dragon. I'm leaning more towards the chicken elements for Bochic, because cool dragon designs have their own class. Half-dragons should "sell" their own uniqueness.

Everyone wishes to grow up to be a hero of some sort, and Iggle is a monster that's hero incarnate in concept. Starts off cute and weak-looking, but as it progresses it becomes a much stronger creature. Little does Iggle know, a journey into herodom is less subtle in our real life.

The idea started out as a little squidly monster, but it soon grew to have many possibilities in its final forms. We tend to see squids and other cephalopods as lowly creatures, but think about it: they're more ancient than any creatures on land. It's probably true that humans tend to think of most creatures either as food or enemies.

We tend to see growing as increment size changes, with different body proportions over time. What if growth was a total change in form, size unaffected? Mallo is the result of this idea, a little creature who blooms and matures into its true form. There are two paths I explored, and in the end I found the back-wings version much more satisfying to look at.

Some creatures are designed first as bio-weapons, then the designers change their mind, and the creature turns less weapon-ish and more pet-ish. Such is the history of the artificial creature Treppy, whom I omitted the mouth to give it a more unnatural look.

This colour sketch helps us spot a couple of potential problems early on, like how the two yellow monsters might be indistiguishable. To try and fix that we will try to use yellos that are as distinct as possible.

The chameleon form is quite an identifiable one, among its reptilian cousins. Opato is a monster who has elements of the chameleon, but not quite chameleon either. The core idea of each Socialmon is still the same: a cute lil' monstrous fella, and he sure is.

For Lodara, I explored the idea of a bird sprouting reptilian elements like sailfins and long, thin tails. Though we're used to the sight of birds, it's good to remember that these little creatures are the legacy of the dinosaurs from many millions of years ago.

The teddy bear has always been a common pop culture element, and the bear creature has been interpreted in all kinds of ways. Some things never change throughout the ages!
