     “you’re right…” the redhead nodded, thinking about some other faces she’d seen today. some of the people seemed to be struck by a sudden wave of shock. could it be–?

     “do you think it’s because of the… –the incident? the town was fine before it happened, and after… after it everything just – changed.”

“It would make sense...” The older woman responded before glancing around, glad for the truth that you’re most invisible in the open.

“I mean especially considering the fact that someone here has to know something... and if your alibi isn’t rock solid... well, who knows what someone who could kill is capable fo doing?”

“You wanna know what I think of this shit?” Callie asked, mostly talking to herself as she climbed out of her Jeep, not realizing that there was someone near her yet. “It’s some fucking bullshit, it’s what it is.” That damn letter, if it could even be considered a letter was there taunting her and she was so not here for it. What kind of asshole would do this? All because of a party? A party that she didn’t even understand because the dude they were celebrating wasn’t even there. Fuck that.

“Well I suppose even if I hadn’t wanted to know I’ve found out know.” The blonde responded as the darker haired woman finished her outburst. “Though lucky for you I do actually want to know what you think of it.” She continued as she allowed a slight smirk to cross her features. “What exactly is this fucking bullshit we’re talking about though?”

     nina glanced away after a moment, sniffing slightly as she shook her head and started digging into her bag for a napkin. “it’s– everything’s alright. not something i can’t take care of, at least.” she had no idea how to take care of it, but a lie was something she’d have to hide behind due to her over-emotional body. “i’m just a bit stressed, sorry you have to see me like this…” the redhead finally found the napkin she’d been frantically looking for, tapping away the single tear that escaped her eye before looking back up to the other. 

Sofi wished there was some way that she could offer help. “I’m very sorry. You don’t have to apologize though.” She offered in response. “We all go through some terrible things. I guess it feels like it keeps happening more and more often though...” The blonde mused as she let her mind drift off for a moment as she looked past the redhead.

     there couldn’t have been a worse time to remind her of what had happened before. the letter had her shaken to the core, nina’s eyes wandering along the ground but not looking up at anyone as she walked through the crowded street, surrounded by people, but feeling all alone. 

     it wasn’t until then that she’d noticed someone’s familiar shoes and finally looked up, her eyes still watering from the note received previously. not a word slipped out of her lips.

As the blonde walked past the other woman, she stopped and glanced over at her face. She wanted to make sure that she was alright... or at least, to find out why she seemed to be in a bad way. The letter that Sofi had received had been effecting her as well, though she refused to ever allow anyone to see her in a vulnerable state.

“Is everything alright?” She asked as she caught the other woman’s eyes.

“It truly is...” The blonde mused before walking closer to the brunette and looking down at the drawing. “What are you working on?” She inquired, looking at the other.

Vivian had been making her way through the crowd for the better part of the night, there was just no fun in staying in one place for too long. Her eyes caught sight of the familiar blonde hair and Vivian switched course her way, a smile on her lips when the other turned. “Sorry, I’d much rather stare at you–” She rose her hand, to show the cigarette playing between her fingers. “–lend me a light?” Of course, she could reach out to the fire, but there was something so intimate about lighting her smoke with that of the other’s. 

Sofi’s eyes instantly locked onto Vivian’s. It had been quite a while since she had last seen the other woman, though whether she felt it had been too long she wasn’t sure. The initial comment would have normally evoked a slight chuckle from the teacher, but she was still somewhat reeling from seeing her again. “You always did prefer to stare at me, didn’t you?” She mused as she looked at the other woman before leaning forward and offering up her cigarette. There was no need to respond, the action in itself was enough. Allowing her to light up with her own cigarette was intimate enough, and she knew her guard was already starting to fall.

“AROUND HERE? definitely not.” naomi replied in agreement. how could it not be? they were in california, after all. naomi’s bright eyes shifted to the fire although sofi had her undivided attention. she definitely had a point, not even naomi could deny that much “waiting for things to come back to life. huh. you know, i like that? it definitely does make me always appreciate seeing all the green again,” she then turned to sofi again, flashing the blonde a smile. “mhm, which is why i’m content right in front of the fire for the remainder of the night.”

“I’m just weird... though I’ve never thought that was a really bad thing.” Sofi responded as she let a smile tug at the corner’s of her lips. She was definitely a fan of the Californian weather, but she couldn’t deny that she was also a fan of many other kinds of weather. “I suppose the truth is that there is potential in everything. There’s probably a metaphor in that somewhere.” The blonde replied simply. “And it is a very nice place to be.”

NAOMI GAVE HER A NOD, figuring that she very well had a point. until, her face scrunched up at her question. “technically, yes. that one is just so hard for me to do, though. i really am miserable in the cold, you know,” naomi shook her head slightly at the thought before she raised her eyebrows at the other. “what do you like about the cold, then? maybe you can open my eyes.”

Sofi couldn’t help but shrug her shoulders slightly at the reaction to her question. “Well, that is definitely not an uncommon response.” The teacher responded easily. “I enjoy the disparity honestly... the difference from what we get more often allows us to enjoy the common far more. And also the idea of waiting for things to come to life. Though I’m sure many like the different ways to find warmth.” She offered as she made eye contact with the other blonde, before looking back at the fire again. “Warmth is always nice.”

Though many in her profession couldn’t look past the destruction that fire caused, Nova managed to see the beauty despite all the ugliness which it had the power to create. Perhaps that was how she had found herself standing close to the bonfire rather than avoiding it in favor of watching the ocean like many of the others. Of course, she’d been near the ocean once or twice herself already, but she needed a change of scenery. “And warm,” she commented with a light laugh, removing the shawl from around her shoulders as she felt her body temperature rising. “But yes, it is very beautiful. I can almost see why some people have an obsession with it.” 

The greatest metaphor that Sofi could think of when she thought about the fire was the scientific expression of heat. Potential being turned into heat and light... It was truly beautiful in her mind. It made sense. It was quantifiable.  Unlike most beauty. “I’ve always wondered what through the minds of people who tried to create them... though I’m sure you have to wonder that as well, possibly even more than me.” The blonde responded matter of factly before moving slightly closer to the other woman. “It’s been a long time. How are you?”

“Sorry, these town gatherings bring out my inner pessimist,” Landon cleared his throat, eyes fixed on some undefined point ahead of him. He breathes out something that’s quiet, almost a chuckle, followed by a low roll of his eyes as his focus soon returned to the cup in his hand and the fire before them. “So why aren’t you— “ He gestured towards the cup. “Indulging like everyone else?” 

“That’s understandable. There’s plenty of people here. Always can find old friends. Or old... enemies I suppose.” She responded with a slight chuckled as she glanced around towards the group of people who they had found their way further from. Hearing his question, her eyes bounced down to her own lack of a cup before bouncing towards his. “Just have never been much of a drinker. My father was though.” The answer was definitely honest, as she found nothing wrong with being up front about her father’s struggles.

NAOMI FIGURED that the closer she’d get to the fire, the more at ease she would feel. the warmth, the smoke, and the crackling of it all didn’t fail. in this instance, it was very easy to tune everything out. she let a small breath emit from her lips, almost jumping slightly when she heard a voice next to her. the blonde smiled, turning to look over at sofi. nodding slowly in agreement, naomi’s eyes fixated on the fire once again. “hm, it is. greatly appreciated, too, since this spring weather has been anything but.”

Sofi couldn’t help but let a small smile grace her features at the response from the woman beside her. The smoke only seemed to help the area around them feel almost somewhat mystical. It was an intriguing feeling, one that Sofi couldn’t help but find appealing. “It truly has been. But we have to find the small beauty even in the cold, do we not?”

“Can you see my eyes glazing over, yet?” Leia teased when the blonde explained what force and velocity were. She wasn’t sure what it was about Sofi that made her uncomfortable – not necessarily in a bad way but Leia found herself less sure of herself around the woman which was a strange phenomenon for someone with confidence for days. Maybe it was the way she looked at her, or the way her voice seemed to get lower when talking to her. Seductive almost. Was that what she was aiming for? Leia knew Sofi could be a flirt but she never knew what her intentions were past that and she never let herself get close enough to find out. Maybe she was just scared to, like something inside her knew something her brain hadn’t caught onto yet. She nodded when Sofi suggested they go and opted just to walk along side her rather than take her hand. As they treaded the sand up to the bar area the brunette glanced over to the older woman, “Sorry, I always just assume everyone drinks around here but if that isn’t for you seriously just get a water or something. You don’t have to poison yourself to impress me.” 

“It’s the same look I get from most of my students. But it’s just what schooling is I suppose.” She responded with a slight chuckle as she continued walking along with the darker haired woman, aware she hadn’t taken her hand. It appeared to be a slight, initially, though her logical centre allowed her to pass by it. Most likely it wasn’t something the younger woman had even consciously realized... so there was no reason to hold it against her. The blonde shrugged slightly, making sure to keep her smile plastered on as she glanced again at the brunette. “Oh it’s perfectly alright, but thank you so much for your concern.” The answer was immediate, though she did wonder if she should continue. After a second, she chose to finish her statement. “Well, what can I do to impress you then?” The teacher asked with a slight chuckle.

“The fire?” He began, lifting the nearly crumbled beer can to his lips to finish what was left. He shouldn’t drink, but the urge is there to have something to soften the unbearably harsh edges of the social situation. “Or the fact that everyone is here for the free booze, and not because they actually care about some guy who almost died.” He’s thinking, something that’s revealed in the set to his brow, the press to his parted lips, and the rigidity to his shoulders. “I think that’s beautiful—that we’re all kind of terrible.”

The blonde crossed her arms as she kept her eyes on the man next to her. His words definitely carried some measure of honesty, and it was definitely one she was acutely aware of. “That might be a fair point. Though I do find that somewhat... dour.” She offered with a slight glance back at the fire. “I personally was more thinking of the fire.”

Leia made a face when Sofi mentioned what she was teaching her students and looked up at the blonde almost apologetically. “Yeah, I can’t say I’d care much for that either.” Her shoulders rose up in a shrug as her bottom lip got pulled in by her teeth. “Nothing new or extremely exciting going on for me either, just same old. Oh… thanks… um, you too.” The brunette fumbled with her words a bit and for some reason felt herself tugging her black leather jacket tighter to her skin at the other woman’s compliment. She noticed the lack of cup in Sofi’s hand and used it as an excuse to change the subject. “I’d offer to buy you a drink but it’s an open bar so we could just go get one if you want?”

Sofi chuckled slightly and shrugged her shoulders almost expectantly. “Well force is just mass times acceleration. And velocity is just speed and a direction.” The blonde offered with a chuckle as she couldn’t help but let her gaze linger on the leather jacket the brunette was wearing, her own overcoat was somewhat too warm near the fire. “Well... I don’t typically drink much but i can always have one drink with someone as beautiful as you.” The words were barely past her lips when she reached her hand out towards the other woman. “Shall we?”

Bii had always had a penchant for bonfires. They laced there way into some of her fondest childhood memories, and even now thousands of miles away from the place she had grown up they took her back. The silhouette of the woman that stood in front of the fire drew Bii closer, and she almost jumped out of her skin when her presence was acknowledged. “Breathtaking.” She agreed after taking a drink to steady her nerves. “It’s so alive, but… so mindless and chaotic… Devouring.”

Sofi nodded slowly as she continued to look into the flames.  “It has raw power. The kind that most of us only imagine having during our lifetimes.” She offered as her facial expression didn’t change for even a moment. The heat and the strength had a perfect ability to mesmerize her. Maybe she wished she could be as passionate as the fire in front of her was... or maybe she just enjoyed the destructive power of it. She wasn’t even sure herself.

It took Leia a moment to realize the woman was talking to her – immediately her mind, for some reason, went blank and all she could do was nod in agreement. She never found fires to be particularly beautiful, she saw too much destruction in them, but then again she related a lot to a flame so maybe she decided she had to find some kind of beauty in them. “You could say that.” It had been a while since Leia’s eyes scanned over the blonde’s features. She’d almost forgotten how pretty she was, especially in the glow of the fire. “I haven’t seen you in a while. What have you been up to?”

Sofi’s eyes darted to the darker haired woman’s face as she watched her nod slightly. It had been far too long since the blonde had seen the younger woman and she couldn’t help herself as she let her eyes drip to the floor and take a long look at the woman beside her. “Oh you know... teaching kids who don’t care how to calculate force and velocity is always fun.” The teacher replied sarcastically before her eyes made their way back to the brunette’s face. “What about you? Been having much fun? You look spectacular.”

“right on. i was going to… but this looked amazing.” beck chuckled and unscrewed the cap, glancing over at her. “hmm? oh, i’m not sure yet. i just let fate decide really.. or i let the previous drink choose.”

“Well then you better start making up for the lost time, eh?” Sofi offered with a chuckle, trying her best to be a compatriot to the man with the drink. “I hope that fate smiles on your choice of drink then.”
