So SPINNS just put out a photoshoot that they’re referring to as NeoMori, seems like we might be due for a bit of a resurgence! Ran it through a translator, this is what I got!

“ What is [NEO Mori Girl]? ”

“ Mori Girl gained popularity in the 2000s as a fashion style characterized by loose silhouettes and natural materials, based on the theme of "a girl who seems to belong in the forest." While maintaining a natural foundation, "NEO Mori Girl" incorporates urban elements and trends, evolving into a more everyday look that is more sociable and sophisticated, and is embraced by a wider range of demographics. SPINNS offers a "NEO Mori Girl" style that matches modern sensibilities, incorporating the latest trends such as "ballet core," incorporating lace and frills; "grunge," expressed through layering vintage clothing; and "geek chic," which adds a playful touch . ”

They also had a coord checklist, not as indepth as Choco’s list but I wasn’t expecting a coord guide anyway.

“ Key points for coordinating a NEO Mori Girl look! ”

“ Combining loose silhouettes, natural colors, and lace items with over jackets and knitwear , layering a knit vest over a lightweight dress, or layering leggings or tights over a skirt are key points.

Boots and sneakers with an outdoor feel are the norm, and accessories with a nature motif are the norm.

By incorporating urban sensibilities and ethical awareness while retaining elements of relaxation in nature , this fashion style is in keeping with the new era. ”

It’s definitely more fast fashion than a lot of us condone but it might be a sign of changing trends and a potential resurgence within Japan, the article also mentioned it being popular in Korea. The specific tag NEO森ガール was how I came across it, so there might be movement outside of corporate interests.

I’m not a big fan of this neo mori look since layering techniques looks way too much y2k and trendy feels to it. The pictures does not have the forest or mori charm like it used to back in the day. And lots of synthetics and barely any natural looking fibers were worn.

This style of mori kei or mori girl (this term is more used in Korea) is more like an exclusive fashion group or underground sub style of vintage in Korea. And I rarely see anyone wearing the new neo mori look outside. It shocks me when i saw price range for the classic mori brands from vintage shops roughly 65-90$. Which is why its pretty hard to spot someone wearing mori kei. I have been wearing mori for about 5 years now and the rebranded mori fashion in Korea looks insincere and feels like a trendy slap on the face to anyone who genuinely enjoys wearing mori girl clothes during its heyday. :/

The original feel of mori isn't there, it feels cold and just bleh. Mori kei/mori girl had such a cozy feeling to it, and you didn't even have to buy from the "official" brands, as long as you got the feel and more or less followed Choco's list you were golden... this feels like a cheap copy. Like one of those gentrified touristy cabins instead of the cozy grandma cottage.

Like, I'm happy there could be a resurgence, but I wish it was a resurgence of the original not this... thing.

Although I do agree we don’t have to buy or thrift og mori brands, but it’s a bit hard to second hand non-branded mori like pieces from where I live. A lot of non branded mori clothes and true branded mori clothes are always quickly snatched up by younger vintage store owners and they are always unethically priced. I always go to a vintage store where there’s a sweet old lady who own the place a give out discounts. ✨

Yeah... it's hard to find Mori clothes, branded or not. I understand that part, too.

I just meant that it was never a requirement to be a mori girl. If you can buy brand good, if you thirft? Good too! But this "neo mori" thing feels like "if you don't get it from us you're not wearing it right." Sorry for the confusion.

Most of the clothes I used to wear were thrifted and modified by me or made from scratch because of this. I wish I could've bought branded stuff, though... Maybe in the bigger cities I could find it thrifted but my city is small and people are weirdly into clean look and "90's vintage", so everything is bland and overpriced. Mexico already has a quirky fashion sense anyway, I don't know why people here don't see that, hehe.

In the UK I think we’re quite spoiled in terms of thrifting when it comes to mori-able clothing. Twee never really died out here, and there’s a great range of charity shops still around, catering to different eras. It’s not even particularly hard to find real Victorian clothes over here, though they might cost you a pretty penny.

Branded mori however is a whole other level, which is fair, we do exist on the other side of the planet to the epicentre of mori, and it’s not something anyone particularly knows about here.

I’m still thankful to have British brands like Fatface, Seasalt, and Cath Kidston (mostly for fabric on that end) that definitely accommodate mori sensibilities.

But gosh I love seeing unique second hand clothes in western countries! It makes me really jealous that there are such wonderful mori folk who wear stunning whole thrifted coords which got me into wearing mori in the first place! ^^

And thankfully I will be moving to the UK in 2-3 years because I seriously need to get unique mori pieces in my closet! :0
