“You will? You’re an angel and if I felt your muscles, I don’t think I’d be WORTHY, I’m just amazed when you take charge, Bron. It’s fucking brilliant!” The best part about being drunk for Fleur was that words could tumble c a r e l e s s l y out of her mouth and she’d be able to blame it later on the alcohol. The good, the bad, the freedom that her being honest came with and herself not trying so hard to to be vicious she had no real problem with. Everything that wasn’t perceived as who she was, could be later blamed on the The Alcohol™. Fleur didn’t think about how this may have effected Bronwyn though, she just thought about how much better she felt now that she could express herself to the other girl, forming a temporary bridge between them. Taking Bronwyn’s hand, Fleur got up, stumbling over her own feet a bit. 

“Is it sad that I’m not even sure I remember what I drank? Also, what hair products do you use, Brownie?” Fleur went to sniff the other girls hair, “it smells like Honeyduke’s Chocolate!”

         &&.   “that’s not true. i’m just a person, the  S A M E  as you.” a fact the company fleur kept often forgot, she felt. it could be spun in circles, circles, circles, the reasons why she was worthy of their torment. but at the centre of it: it reigned TRUE. just a teenager, the same as them. just a human, the same as them. bron could only hope they’d catch up and realise. perhaps, judging by fleur’s liquored ramblings: she ALREADY had. 

          “i’m not sure. i don’t OFTEN drink. or, more accurately, i don’t at all.” just sip, occasionally. very occasionally. “... i suppose it’s worrying though. someone could have spiked your drink. do you think someone spiked your drink, fleur?” she supported the girl’s frame with her own. a bout of laugher thoughtlessly slipping from her lips, fleur’s face close in an attempt to sniff her hair. “it’s shampoo maverick bought me. he really ought to stop, i don’t know what to do with all the things he gets. i have a spare, if you’d like to keep it.”

“Perhaps you’re right,” she pouted slightly but nodded her head, deciding maybe it would be best to stay in. She had an assignment to do anyways. “Yes, thank you, Bronwyn.” 

         bron eyed the disappointment that flickered in dawn’s features, and pursed her lips, a small smile seeping into her features. “... i suppose ten minutes couldn’t hurt? and there’s always charms to dry our clothes.” she slipped out of her seat, and bopped her head expectantly in the direction of the hall that lead to the entrance. “are you coming, then?”

“Yes, because people are usually worse and if you don’t get your hopes up they won’t disappoint you. You have to be disappointed, all the time, with how you’re treated sometimes–aren’t you?” She was curious, now, because Bron’s way of thinking was so unlike her own and she couldn’t understand why someone would do that to themselves. “So you just take all the cruelty people like Rosenthal heap on you and do nothing? How’s that helping anyone?”

         “a little, yes.” bron couldn’t lie. the way people treated her often was disappointing, and that could be on a good day. on a bad day, it had the potential to merit sadness and humiliation and tears. “but how would anyone know kindness is an option if it wasn’t shown to them? an eye for an eye makes the WHOLE WORLD blind, and that’s a terribly sad thought, don’t you think? if i bit back every time sterling said or did something awful, if i was just as awful right back, he wouldn’t know there’s any other way to be. and maybe my kindness doesn’t mean others will care to return the favour —- but how could i ever expect them to do so at all, if i wasn’t the change i want to see in the world? if i didn’t lead by example?” 

          she tucked her hair behind her ears. “i don’t just take it,” bron challenged, a tiny sliver of frustration present in her tone. “i’m choosing not to fight back, not surrendering to the fact that people will be cruel to me. you can’t fight fire with fire. that DOESN’T mean i’m alright with being bullied and walked all over and harassed.”

“What?!” He spat back almost immediately, as her question threw him off completely. “Well, th–… That’s another stupid fucking question, isn’t it?” It wasn’t. It wasn’t at all, and moments continued to pass as he came short of a decent answer. A blood traitor, yes, but there was more to it than that. She was easy to pick on, thus easy to laugh at; merely a source of entertainment to brighten their boring school days. “I could go on all day, but we have to get you to a fucking hospital wing, don’t we? I’ll tell you one thing, though. You’re a filthy blood traitor. Obviously I’m not going to fucking like you, am I? Now let’s go.”

     ❝that’s it?❞ she asked, gentle voice voice breaking off into another sob. bron continued moving, shakily, for awhile, in near silence. FILTHY BLOOD TRAITOR. if she had a galleon for every time she’d heard that. bron had accepted that because she refused to outwardly denounce muggles and the like, the society her parents forced her into would never be welcoming. it was a small price to pay to display solidarity for the victims of prejudice. however, the brand of ridicule she faced seemed much more  p e r s o n a l  than the usual punishment for such a crime. in fact, aside from the haughtiness, mostly she witnessed other blood traitors being ignored. ❝i’ve seen crius be less hateful towards muggleborns,❞ she started, confusion and sadness lacing her tone. ❝you call me names, you humiliate me. you yell at me and crius... you know WELL enough what he does,❞ she shook her head. ❝and you’re not even completely sure why, are you? other than the fact that it’s easy. don’t you... don’t you feel anything, sterling? don’t you SEE what you’re doing?❞

And now she was crying. The hushed cackles of his friends’ as he left to escort Bronwyn rang in his ears, which did nothing to calm his already flared temper. “I’m not upset, Bronwyn.” He stuffed his hands into his pockets, pouting like a grumpy toddler. “I’m just a bit fucking annoyed that I’m missing out on my education, but I guess you really needed someone to watch you drag along your fucked leg? Fuck, teachers are so stupid.” He glanced down at her leg, grimacing slightly at the state of her wound.“I mean, you’re fucking crying, again, and I’m just having a normal fucking conversation with you?” 

     ❝annoy you, then. i don’t mean to do that.❞ he was pouting like he was upset. she listened to him rant, and felt increasingly more like taking a detour to her dorm room and crying in private. she could never pick out what exactly it was she’d done to enrage sterling, and binks, and crius. all of them. it wasn’t that she doubted her capacity to do something stupid, it was that she really had no idea how someone could dislike another person so intensely when she barely uttered a word to them in the first place. at his last ‘ fucking ’ bron did let out a small cry. ❝merlin, why do you HATE me so much?❞ she asked, brows furrowed together over her shoulder at him.

“No,” Nadia disagreed, “It would be my fault for not knowing my own limitations. You’re not responsible for the actions of others or their well-being. Do you even consider how often people must take advantage of your sense of duty?” Nadia couldn’t imagine it–did Bronwyn have any pride or dignity? “Admirab–? Hmph.” She scoffed, sinking further into her chair as though the words had offended her somehow (oddly embarrassed, maybe, would be more accurate). “You just like to believe the best in people even if evidence is overwhelmingly to the contrary–stupid at the best of times, but in the current climate it’s particularly dangerous.”

     ❝people make mistakes. people do stupid things. it doesn’t mean i should leave them alone when they’re vulnerable. why would i think about something like that?❞ bronwyn’s kindness didn’t make her an imbecile. she knew she more often than not gave more than she was returned. but what you got back for the things you did wasn’t the point of being nice at all. ❝is that such a bad thing? to believe that people can be better, if given the chance? i know you think i’m a fool, nadia. and that’s okay. maybe i am. but i’m not going to be rude and mean and unwilling to help whenever i can possibly manage it. i couldn’t bear to add to the cruelty that already exists in the world i live in. i don’t want to.❞

“What the fuck…” Sterling threw his hands in the air, entirely stupefied, really fucking flummoxed, and just generally speechless. Did Crius finally have sex with her? Why couldn’t she walk like a normal person? “Is this a fucking joke?” Sterling looked around to see if anyone else was seeing this ridiculousness. “Fucking hell, stop making weird noises,” he groaned, and begrudgingly helped her up, though he tried to keep her at maximum distance as if she was a bag of poo. “This isn’t me helping you, by the way. I just want to get back to fucking class as quick as possible, so if you could not do this every 100m, that’d be great, because I’m not fucking carrying you, if that’s what you’re thinking. No fucking way.”

     when his hands moved toward her, bronwyn really DID flinch. as if they were intended to hurt, not help. how was she supposed to know the difference with sterling and his friends? all they ever did was hurt her in one way or another. she bit back the sounds that came along with crying, even if tears dampened her eyes. ❝i didn’t mean to,❞ ——— she stopped trying to explain herself. ❝i know. i’m sorry,❞ bron apologised for the third time. this time, when she began walking again, her fists clenched in pain by her sides, she didn’t make noises. ❝i don’t MEAN to upset you, sterling.❞

     the flinch at his harsh words could be easily mistaken as one from the sharp stinging pain stemming from her leg. it wasn’t like he was wrong. she was stupid, stupid enough trip and injure herself. and be forced upon someone who so clearly hated her. a stupid, clumsy burden. ❝sorry,❞ she said, quietly, and tried to will herself to hurry. only to stumble toward the floor. ❝i'm sorry, i... ow, ow,❞ bron whimpered whilst trying to stand.

Nadia swallowed the myriad of retorts that came to mind at Bron’s words–honestly, the girl made it too easy to even be enjoyable sometimes. She couldn’t help the snort that escaped at her reaction to the drink, “Because I don’t have the palate of a child, maybe?” She tilted her glass around, the contents swirling as they sat in silence–until finally Nadia broke, “So you’d really feel obligated to sit here and look after me, knowing there’s a chance I could be awful to you? Would you do that for anyone, regardless of what they’ve done to you in the past?” She took another drink, “I do not understand you, Travers.”

     ❝i suppose that’s a fair call,❞ bronwyn replied. she couldn’t stand anything too bitter. she could barely stomach coffee. ❝what if i didn’t, and something happened to you? it’d be my fault for not being there. it’s about... duty, morals, more than it could ever be about how i personally feel about you.❞ she took an even tinier sip from the glass, and this time, managed not to twist her features. ❝i don’t think you’re awful, even if you can be unkind. i’ve seen the way you defend your friends. it’s very admirable.❞

“–I can always count on you to say exactly what i need to hear.” He joked, attention immediately placed on her before anyone else could pop around the corner. A grin curved onto his lips as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder to pull her against his side, pecking a kiss to her hair. “Where’ve you been all day? I really needed the pep talk.”

     bron may as well have been a string of christmas lights the way she LIT up. ❝long day? i had a study club with some third years —- who, by the way, were astounded to learn that i’m dating ‘ hogwarts’ best quidditch player. ’ and then i saw reggie for a bit.❞ she idly smoothed out his tie, ❝you, sleepy maverick morgan, have my undivided focus. pep talk? hmmm, let’s see,❞ she hummed, ❝only a few months until you graduate and, since you won’t be at school with them, there’ll be more than just a table between you and your hoards of fans?❞ she laughed up at him fondly.

“Moral compass? Merlin.” Nadia rolled her eyes, “Reggie Mulciber’s replaced me with you? Wretched.” She gave her a searching look, before handing her a glass, “Here, then. either drink it yourself or hold it for me until I finish this one. Make yourself useful.”

     ❝personally, i prefer the notion that friends are IRREPLACEABLE. me and you aren’t the most similar of people,❞ bron offered, though, not in a way that suggested their differences meant she was any better than nadia. reluctantly, she accepted the glass. when she sipped it, her face screwed up like she’d been handed a lemon. ❝——— that’s awful. how can you drink that like it’s nothing?❞
