How much do you – well, when Mads comes in at the door how much will you talk about his job? Will he just be Mads or do you talk a lot about what he has been doing?

Hanne: It’s not something we talk a lot about, actually. At home we’re just Hanne and Mads, Carl and Viola. But I am with him when it comes to deciding what he’s going to do next and how it fits in with our family – so not artistically, but with the family, definitely. I sort of approve: Yes, it’s okay you do that one, too.

And you chose to step out of your own choreographing career 5 years ago which was something you decided to do. Why did you make that choice?

Hanne:  Well… I sort of looked at Mads whose career was going full speed after Rejseholdet (television series) and I just didn’t want to be the angry wife who’d say: “It’s your turn to empty the dishwasher!” when he came home, maybe I should relax a little and do more of that stuff. And it has been amazing – I love being around the house and I don’t feel like I’ve sacrificed my own career in any way. I have done my dancing and been very happy because of that.

Mads Mikkelsen interview: ‘I spent so much time alone, I was going crazy’

The Danish actor tells Alexandra Pollard about the gruelling shoot for his new film ‘Arctic’, which included working with a semi-trained polar bear, and why he won’t fall into the ‘trap’ of veering off-message

“That’s not what the film is about, that’s not the reason we made the film,” he says. “It’s a film about the difference between surviving and being alive. It’s a film about humanity.” Does he feel that in the current climate, both literally and politically speaking, people are increasingly seeing allegories that aren’t necessarily there? “I know exactly what you’re talking about, it’s The Guardian,” he says. “Of course that writer chose to make it what he wants, so I’m not making that mistake again. I’m talking about this film, and that’s it.” So he doesn’t want to talk about anything except the film? “No, because it always turns out to be the main message in the interview, and I’m not walking into that trap.” 

Does he feel he was misquoted [about #MeToo ]? “Basically what I was trying to tell him is that when there is a conflict in the world, which there always is, and there is definitely now, the problem is the lack of communication between the two sides. The real lack of communication. And it seems to be that nobody is really interested in having that conversation, and that communication. And that’s all I have to say about that subject.”

I had wanted to ask him his thoughts on the progress of diversity in Hollywood, given that he’s been involved in three major franchises – Bond, Star Wars and Marvel – all of which are having to confront historical deficiencies in that regard. “I have tons to say about that,” he says, “but not in this interview. I’m trying to sell a film that I’m immensely proud of, and I know that it will drown unless we just stick to the subject.”
