6月になりました。 早めに植えた葉っぱ用のえごまは順調に育っています。

このところ毎日のようにツバメが巣材を集めに、畑の泥だまりに来ています。

野菜についていたイモムシを置いて、離れたところから見守っていたら、さっと咥えてどこかに飛んでいきました。

畑に行くたびに、ツバメいるかな、と遠くから確認してそっと見守る日々はいつまでつづくのでしょうか。来なくなったら寂しくなりそうです。

Lately, swallows have been coming to the muddy spots in the field almost every day to gather materials for their nests.

The other day, I left a caterpillar I found on some vegetables and watched from a distance. One of the swallows quickly swooped in, grabbed it, and flew off somewhere.

Now, every time I go out to the field, I find myself checking from afar—“Are they here today?”—and quietly watching over them. I wonder how long this little routine will last.

I have a feeling I’ll miss them when they stop coming.

春になり、ナメクジが勢いづいてきました。 毎朝、セルトレイの裏側をチェックしてナメクジを捕殺しています。

ひと作業終えて帰ってきた娘。しばらく宿題をしたり、本を読んだりしていたのですが、よく見たら娘の肩に小さなナメクジ！

ナメクジを使役してるの？ダイモン*なの？と絡んだら、とても鬱陶しがられてしまいました。

*ダイモン・・・「黄金の羅針盤」に登場する守護精霊

Spring has arrived, and the slugs are out in full force. Every morning, we check the undersides of the cell trays and pick off any slugs we find.

After finishing one round of work, my daughter came back inside. She spent some time on homework and reading, but then I noticed something on her shoulder — a tiny slug!

I joked, asking if she was putting the slug to work, or if it was her dæmon*. She found this very annoying.

札幌にいた頃、通勤で使っていたこのクロスバイク。 7年間放置していましたが、乗れるように整備しました。

ガソリンの高騰を受けて、出荷コストを下げるため、眠っていた自転車を復活させました。 ところが早くも「大量の野菜を背負って出荷できるのか？」という問題にぶつかっています。

とりあえず当初の目的はいったん脇に置いて、桜の季節になったら江の川沿いを走ってみようと思います。

ついにシーズンイン！

今年はどんな一年になるでしょうか。災害級は困るけど、夏にたくさん雨が降ってくれたらうれしいです。

1月末に川本小学校の学習発表会があり、えごまの授業を一緒に行ってきた4年生から招待してもらいました。

えごまの栽培から販売までの取り組みの中で学んだことを、何を、どのように伝えるのか。たくさん考え、準備してきたことがよく伝わってくる発表でした。

えごま栽培の苦労、えごまの栄養価や効果、おいしい料理法など、着眼点も表現力も独創的で、とても素晴らしかったです。40分ほどの短い時間でしたが、あっという間で、とても楽しいひとときでした。

At the end of January, there was a learning presentation at Kawamoto Elementary School, and we were invited by the fourth-grade students with whom we had been working on egoma lessons.

The presentation clearly showed how much thought and preparation had gone into deciding what to share and how to convey what they had learned through the process of growing and selling egoma.

They shared the challenges of cultivation, the nutritional value and benefits of egoma, and ways to prepare it in delicious dishes, using a variety of approaches such as picture-story shows, comedy-style skits, and live demonstrations. Their perspectives and expressive skills were original and impressive. Although the presentation lasted only about forty minutes, it was an enjoyable and memorable time.

今期の収穫が終わり、最近は搾油をしています。秋晴れが続いた11月から一転、山陰地方の12月はくもり空がとても多いです。カラッと晴れる秋の間に収穫を終わらせなければ、という焦燥感から解放され、ほっとしています。

The harvest for this season is finally wrapped up, and lately we’ve been busy pressing the oil. November gave us plenty of crisp, sunny autumn days, but here in the San’in region, December has settled into its usual run of cloudy skies. It’s a real relief not to feel that constant pressure anymore — the rush to get everything harvested while the weather was still perfect.

霧のまち

移住当初、霧が深い朝に「今日は晴れそうですね」と言われて「？？？」でしたが、今は納得です。

地元民天気予報は意外と侮れません。

10月中旬から収穫が始まりました。

株間を広くとった圃場では、枝を広げたエゴマ同士が絡まり合わず、作業がサクサク進みます。

曇り空が多いのでなかなか天日干しできないのが悩みですが、虫が発生したわりには昨年よりたくさん採れそうなので安心しました。

運動会がありました。 高学年になると競技中以外は仕事があり、応援席がありません。 小学生は仕事中も全力疾走。 娘に限らず、常に一生懸命な姿に感動しました。

蛾の幼虫が発生してしまいました。 BT剤を散布してたたかいます。

そろそろ収穫期なので、 虫に気を取られて時期を逃さないように気を付けます！

高温少雨にかなり気を揉みましたが、昨年よりはマシだったということなのでしょうか。今のところ結構いい感じに育っています。8月中旬に大雨が降って以降、ときどきパラリと降ってくれるのがとてもありがたいです。

9月は少しだけのんびりできる時期ですが、虫も出てくる時期なので、気を付けて見ていこうと思います。

We were quite worried about the hot weather and lack of rain, but it seems things are going better than last year. So far, the perilla is growing nicely. Since the heavy rain in mid-August, we’ve been getting occasional light showers, which has been a real blessing.

September is a bit of a slower time for us, but it’s also when the worms start to show up, so we’ll need to keep a careful eye on the fields.

短い梅雨が終わり、終わったとたんに猛暑が続いています。 今日は11日ぶりに雨が降りました。 昨年は40日間雨が降らない時期がありましたが、梅雨の期間はしっかり雨が降り、えごまがそれなりに育った後でした。 えごまの幼苗が無事に成長するのか気が気ではありません。

The short rainy season is over, and now it’s gotten really hot. Today we finally had some rain — the first in 11 days. Last year, we had 40 days without rain too, but that was after a good, steady rainy season, so the perilla seedlings had already grown well by then. This year, we’re a bit worried about whether the young perilla seedlings will grow okay.
