so there's a point in my day when i have to cross like a busy two-lane road without any crossing areas or stop signs or lights or anything and it's like a road where people are pulling off from the highway so i usually have to wait awkwardly for a while and then do a little sprint but anyway. i was waiting today and somebody stopped to let me go despite cars piling up behind them and i was frantically gesturing trying to convey "i can't go now bc the cars are still zooming by in the other lane" and so they like pulled a diagonal move and blocked both lanes of traffic so i could cross and everyone behind them was soooo mad at us. like i was very grateful but omg you should probably not do that

Bc I'm annoying and like maps and statistics, here's the numbers for every major urban area in the country, based on their combined statistical area (so not just the 5 boroughs but the whole tri state area for NYC, for instance):

I WAS WORRIED ABT THIS MISCONCEPTION. So these numbers are from CSAs, Combined Statistical Areas, meaning not just the city proper, and not even just its immediate suburbs, but also including exurban areas and nearby smaller cities. And if you look at patterns of Republican vs Democratic voting nationwide by population, you see that the conflict is not between cities vs rurals but rather cities vs exurbs, with the suburbs as the swing area. So for example its not Dallas vs Texas Hill Country, its Dallas vs all the weird lil towns ppl own homes in outside Dallas and commute from for work. And BOTH those populations are captured in the numbers here!
