What you’re seeing here seems to be a displacement map or height map of the original image, the moon. Pure black (0 RGB) represents the lowest possible height value and Pure white (255 RGB) the heighest. Similar such maps are used in video games to improve performance by baking some data into maps like bump and normal maps and applying them to the mesh to create the illusion of greater polygonal density.
