Structures – Life through a Window Album Review
Structures are back and better than ever! On May 13th 2014 Canadian Progressive Metal trio released the follow up to their October 2011 effort Divided By. Two and a half years later and some major lineup changes have not stopped them from progressing as one of the modern day heavy hitters in metal. The departure of lead vocalist Nick Xourafas has led guitarist Brendon Padjasek to fill his shoes as lead vocalist and surely does not disappoint. Brendon’s vocal style is quite different than Nick’s and the difference can be clearly heard on the record.
The first track on the album, “Buried” draws back elements from their first EP “All of the above” and their debut album “Divided By”. It begins with a nice bouncy chugging pattern and an in your face, pissed off, mid ranged screams. The sound of this record as a whole is definitely a more mature and a more structured (pun intended) sound. In addition, Structures brought on board some of their friends to do guest vocals on LTAW. Drew York of Stray from the Path is featured on track 3 “The Worst of Both Worlds” and Adrian Fitapaldes of Northlane is featured on the track 10 “Follower”.
Guitarists Brendon and Spyros brought some great riffs to the table with tons of groove this time around. Drummer Andrew McEnaney proved himself to stand as one of the top drummers in the genre through his efforts on LTAW. The production on this album has gratefully improved from their last release. However, the only complaint I have about the release is that at some points I found that the vocals overpowered the guitars. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the fact that Brendon pronounces almost all of his words with his screams so you can actually understand what he is saying without having to refer to lyrics.
In conclusion, LTAW was definitely worth the wait and I am excited for the future of the band. I am glad to know they are still around even after major lineup changes such as their lead vocalist Nick and their Bassist Spencer. If you guys get a chance, I highly recommend checking them out when they tour in your area. You can catch them out at the All Stars Tour 2014 with I See Stars, The Acacia Strain plus more this summer and make sure you pick Life through a Window on iTunes or your local music store.
