Day 22: An Underrated Movie
I know I’m only supposed to choose one, but for this specific challenge I just can’t. Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire are both such amazing films, yet neither of them get as much recognition as they should.
In a way, their stories are both similar: finding a land that some people believe do not exist, and both places have untold treasures, heroines that kick mega butt, and so much more.
They are such touching stories in their own ways, and let your mind explore thousands of possibilities, especially children. I just think that the amount of effort put into making these movies aren’t given enough credit, and are overlooked because they have male leads.
@solarsurfer: Interstellar Academy AU
Two more weeks of waiting, Penelope thought with a sort of grim anticipation as she walked through the hustle and bustle of the Montressor Spaceport.
In about two more weeks, she was going back to school via space shuttle (this was the nearest stop for her-Interstellar Academy, one of the best schools in the nearby galaxy. She was immensely grateful, of course. She’d worked her butt off to enter the science program (with honours) and she enjoyed the work she did there.
Yet…she still felt a sense of dread.
It wasn’t the coursework that bothered her Not at all. It was more or less the students. Roughly five or so months she’d been there, and Penelope hadn’t managed to make a single friend. Even worse, she’d made lots of enemies. Penelope, in short, was outcasted for being a little (okay, a lot) different and socially awkward than most. While she tried not to let this bother her and focus on her work, it still hurt, feeling so isolated from her peers.
She sighed, sitting down on a sort of bench that seemed quiet enough and pulled out a book, starting to read. In general, what she usually did.
Jim Hawkins sat quietly on one of the metallic benches of the spaceport as he toyed with a strange object in his hands, a small contraption of his making. In short, it was a gear connected to smaller gears with screws and bars here and there. Absent-mindedly, he spun the large gear with his middle finger.
Last week, Jim was granted a one week leave of absence by the Interstellar Academy to visit his mother. At first, he was thankful, but now that the week had come to an end he wished they had given him more time.
He lifted his head from his invention and began to glance around the spaceport. Nothing seemed to be of any interest to him until his eyes wandered to the bench besides his. There sat a girl reading a book. A book with the Interstellar Academy stigma.
The right corner of his mouth curled into a grin.
“I didn’t know there were other students from Montressor,” he said in friendliness.
Penelope looked up from her book to see a young man with dark hair, roughly her age, talking to her. She studied his face for a moment, trying to determine if he was just getting her goat or honestly wanted to try and make a decent conversation. Penelope had had a lot of bad experiences of that sort, and it kind of made her a bit wary of almost everyone. But so far, she couldn’t see anything in his tone or expression that suggested any ulterior motives.
Besides, it wasn’t very often that she got to meet students from IA that lived relatively close to her. Or were even remotely friendly to her either. She couldn’t say that she wasn’t at all interested.
In a sort of calm, half amused tone, she replied, “Well, I don’t reallly live in Montressor, just one of its outer moons.” She pointed to a small, pale glowing object in the sky, not very far up. “I live on the moon base, but it’s kind of small. Doesn’t have it’s own spaceport. But it’s pretty close, ” she admitted. “I didn’t know there were other students around this area, either.” She hoped that the conversation didn’t end up being completely about Interstellar Academy-that was a topic she didn’t like to talk about that much (or the other students at least.)
She looked over and saw the little contraption he was holding in his hands and started to gaze at it in amazement. “D-did you make that?… Yourself?…”
As she explained, Jim nodded with genuine interest. He then looked past her and through the large windows of the spaceport and saw the faded image of a moon in the sky. He hated to admit it, but he had completely forgotten about the moon base and the fact it was inhabited. He knew he learned bits and pieces about it from his high school years, but that was also during the time he didn’t care much for his studies, or anything for that matter, so he didn’t really remember much. Now he was beginning to wonder why the I.A. even accepted him, seeing that he didn’t know as much as he should about his home planet. If this girl wasn’t present at the moment, he would’ve facepalmed himself right then and there.
“Huh..” he mused, returning his gaze to her hazel eyes. “To be honest, I don’t hear much about students from Montressor, much less one of its moons. You must be pretty smart then, miss.. uh..?”
He looked down at his invention. “Oh, this little thing? Just something I made during a flight.”
He held it out to her with a sheepish smile. “Quite a long trip as you can see.”
“It’s not really well known…” she explained, “…it’s rather secluded. Even though it’s been referenced on different maps and things, the moon base isn’t necessarily common knowledge. Pretty much why my family and I live there, basically.” Penelope stopped, wondering if she had said something more than she should have.
“But anyways,” Penelope continued, “I guess I could say that I am…pretty smart. My grades are fairy decent. Probably a good chunk of why I got in.” She put a hand behind her hair, laughing a little nervously. Still, there was an unmistakeable change in her posture, just a little straighter.
She noticed that there was a slight hesitance, almost a wistful tone when he mentioned that, and it made her feel a little guilty. Almost as if she was boasting.“Of course, that’s not the most important thing, There are lots of different types of students studying different subjects and striving to become leaders in respective fields. Whether it is the area of science and technology, like I am, or future ambassadors for different planets and things, or members of the Royal Naval Cadets, people excel at different things. You learn different skills and have different qualities depending where you might want to go. ”
She hoped that was able to make him feel slightly better, even though it was probably more cold and technical than was helpful.
“Oh, I’m sorry!…I got so caught up going off tangent, I forgot to tell you my name…It’s Penelope, Penelope Van Der Kamp.”
Another comment that he made caught her interest,. A word, really. “Flight?…What exactly do you mean by that? …In any case..it must have been long indeed for you to have created this in that time frame..Just look at that craftsmanship!” She pointed to the small creation, still in amazement of how all of the parts seemed to fit together like a puzzle piece, each made to work as smoothly as silk.
Jim let out a nervous chuckle. "Well, I guess it was more of a.. trip. What I do at I.A. sometimes requires a lot of uh, traveling, you see. Most times we stay at the academy and train, but sometimes we get to chance to go on official assignments with higher ranking officers."
He looked down wistfully at the object. "One time, I was sent as far as the Coral Galaxy under the command of General Cross. We seemed to sail on forever. And I guess when I wasn't too busy with ship work, I spent some time on this little thing."
Jim smiled up at her.
"Smart and quite the talker too. Nice to meet you, Penelope Van Der Kamp. I'm James. James Hawkins."
He extended a callused hand out to her.
"But you can just call me Jim."
