notes: this fic is looooong, way longer than intended.
It was a Friday night, and like usual on Friday nights, the group had decided to go out. The friend you had since high school really had a thing for late nights at some shitty bars downtown. Sarah, the total sweetheart of the group, was the one to send out the details. Bear, without a backbone and following Nikki like a lap dog, had happily responded that he and Nikki were coming and Ian had only typed back how drunk he was going to get. You had sighed when reading the group-chat, you were not excited for going out at all but agreed anyway, just to keep peace. Nikki hadnât replied in the group at all, which made a weird feeling settle in your stomach as you had gotten ready.
Nikki was your best friend, or at least used to be your best friend. You had grown up on the same street, just a couple houses in between yours. Both in childhood and in your adult life, you were inseparable. If you were missing, theyâd only had to find Nikki, and if Nikki was missing, theyâd only had to find you.
Ian, your⊠boyfriend, brought you to the bar. He had commented on how well your ass looked in your dress when you had gotten in his car. The comment didnât make you happy in the slightest. You didnât like Ian, absolutely not in a romantic way. There was one reason, and one reason only you decided to date him, and it wasn't because of you nor him.
Because of Ianâs shitty time frame, you arrived last at the bar. Sarah, Nikki and Bear were already seated at a corner booth when you came in. Sarah and Bear waved enthusiastically for you and Ian to come over, calling your names, but you didnât look at them. You looked at the quiet girl next to Bear, and the arm around her. It had been two months since Nikki and Bear had come out as a couple. Sarah and Ian had cheered for Bear because he had finally gotten the girl he had pined over since high school, but you didnât cheer for him. It felt so absurdly wrong to you. Sarah and Ian had cheered for Bear because he had finally gotten the girl he had pined over since high school, but you didn't cheer for him. It felt so absurdly wrong to you. Nikki had always denied him any romantic interest, so why? Why had she gotten interested? After what had happened between you just days before she started dating him?Â
Your parents had arranged a family dinner, and of course Nikki was invited. She was always invited to family events. After dinner, when both of you had gotten a little bit too wine drunk, you had decided to walk to the playground, just two neighbourhoods away from your old street. You and Nikki had spent endless hours there as kids. On the way over you two had skipped together and danced, all while holding hands, on the empty streets. You were over the moon. You always loved when it was just the two of you.Â
As you sat on the swings, Nikki drunkenly slurred out, âI love you, Y/N.â You laughed and replied, âI love you too, Nikki,â but Nikkiâs facial expression didnât carry a similar smile as yours. It had a frown. âNo, Y/N. I love you,â and then it clicked for you. This wasnât a drunken cheer for friendship. This was something real. That something real that had lingered between you and Nikki since you were teenagers. For the last five years of your friendships, things hadnât been exactly strictly platonic. You had started cuddling in ways friends didnât do. You had started complimenting each other in ways friends didnât do. You had started to notice small details about each other in ways friends didnât do. You did so many things that friends didnât do, but not in public. Never in public, not if you couldnât brush it off as just being close friends.
âYouâre drunk,â you answered, mumbling while looking down on the sand beneath you. âIt doesnât matter. I love you,â she retorted, in that way only she did, and stood up from her swing beside yours; pulling you up from your swing and hugged you. Nothing about that hug was platonic, not the way her hands crawled around your shoulders and your arms hugged her waist. You both hummed into that hug. You had felt so warm in it that late summer evening. Nikkiâs touch was the warmest, softest thing you knew.Â
After a while, you two went back to your parentsâ place. You two were both too drunk to drive so you had crawled into your childhood bed. âYouâre so warm,â you mumbled into her tank top, smiling droopily. She chuckled at that and replied, âIâll keep you warm forever, baby.â
That was why it felt so wrong. You had been so much more than friends and just days after telling you she loved you, cuddled with you in your childhood room and called you âbabyâ; she had gotten with someone else. You were so completely hurt by that. Sure, you had been afraid to date a girl, but you wouldâve done it for her if sheâd just asked. That was why you had started dating Ian. He was the perfect candidate for you. Both you and Nikki had been friends with him for so long, and it wouldnât be so blatantly obvious that youâd be with him to stir shit. You wanted her to be jealous, for her to come back to you; but it hadnât gone as planned. She hadnât broken up with Bear. The only thing that had happened was you growing distant to each other.
Nikki often thought about that night too, but she couldnât think of that anymore. She had someone else. That someone had his arm around her proudly at that moment. She knew she had fucked up by telling you that she loved you that night, because you were a risk. A risk she had been too afraid of taking. Everything felt too much with you. You overwhelmed her in a way no one else could, and yet most importantly, you were a girl and girls werenât supposed to love other girls.
The night moved on. Bear, Sarah and Ian talked about everything from heaven to earth, laughing like they were having the time of their lives, but you couldnât. The only thing you could think about was how your and Nikkiâs knees occasionally bumped into each otherâs. It felt like scorching fire every time. Your bodies had always had that way of moving towards the otherâs, especially since everything started five years ago, and you hated that. To retaliate against that, you leaned into Ian on the other side of you. You wanted a reaction from her. A reaction that said âNo, youâre mineâ but you didnât get that. The only thing you got was a small frown on her face. That couldâve meant absolutely anything.Â
You could see Ian in your peripheral vision, an annoying smirk falling onto his face. His hand crawled onto your waist and then fell lower and lower so it was practically on your bum. Ew. You hated that. Sure, you could appreciate a little PDA in a relationship, but this was too much, especially from a person you didnât even like.Â
Ian had left your table and you couldnât bring yourself to mind. His possessive touch had made you want to puke all night. âY/N, donât turn around,â Sarah said, looking behind you. You, never the one to listen to anyone when they told you to not look or be discreet, turned around and when you did, you wished you wouldnât. Behind the crowds of people, you saw Ian with his tongue down another girlâs throat. It didnât make you jealous, because frankly, you never liked him, but you felt humiliated. You had come here with a guy, who you were clearly in a relationship with, and he had embarrassed you by ignoring you and made out with someone else. Strangers were looking at you with pity, like you were supposed to be heartbroken, and you hated it. âIâm gonna go,â you said as you slipped out from the table and went out.
Nikki had noticed Ian at the same time you did and she wanted to punch him into oblivion. How could anyone ever treat you like that? That you were just something to throw away? But her attention changed when you left. She had to find you. You were probably heartbroken and she couldnât leave you like that.Â
She had gotten up, not saying a word, and started her search for you. With the big groups of people, she had a hard time seeing you. Both you and her were really short, you even shorter than her, so she couldnât possibly see you behind all the people. She squeezed between the crowd, not caring about the annoyed groans from behind you. It didnât matter. You were her⊠best friend after all.Â
You had gone out on the parking lot in the pouring autumn rain, trying to call a taxi down. You just wanted to go home, forget everything about the night. Forget about Ian, the strangers looking at you with pity, and her. You didnât want to remember any of it.Â
âY/N,â you heard behind you, from the one person you wanted least to hear from. When you turned around, she stood barely a metre away, a little out of breath, âIâm so sorry. I canât imagine how youâre feeling,â Nikki said with that caring tone, like she cared about you. You snapped at that, all the emotions from the evening collapsing down on you. Your finger was pointed into her chest. âYou have no right to come here and ask anything! You donât know me at all!â That was what your mind said, but not your heart. You knew you were lying. No one in this world would ever know you as well as she did. She knew your body and mind, in and out. âY/N,â she sighed while rubbing her eyes, clearly confused and lightly annoyed by your irritation. âJust listen to me. Iâm not here to stir some shit. Iâm here for you!â âNo, I wonât listen to you. I donât want to hear another word coming from your mouth. Iâve loved you for over five years and then you started parading around with Bear like we didnât mean anything,â your voice broke midsentence, âlike I didnât mean anything.â A tear rolled down your cheek as you had admitted that. You and Nikki had never put a name on what had been going on between you, but now you had. You had said the word that never had come out of your lips, âloveâ, and what a word that was. Both of you froze for a second when that word had left your lips, but as soon as your senses came back to you, you ran. You didnât know where you were going, you just ran. It was almost impossible to tell the difference between your tears and the raindrops that had fallen off your face. You were so stupid. Firstly, you had believed she loved you. Secondly, you had moped after her when she suddenly got with Bear and thirdly, you had gotten with Ian, the classic fuckboy, just to piss her off but he fucking cheated right in front of your eyes, like you didnât matter. You didnât matter to him. You didnât matter to Nikki. You didnât matter to anyone.
Nikki didnât know what to do. The love of her life, the girl she had quietly loved for years, had just admitted what had forever been between you and then you had bolted, like you couldnât stand even being in her presence for a second longer. She was so distraught by everything going on. As her face filled with tears and her knees gave up on her, falling to the ground, she could only wonder, what had gone so wrong. If you just had stayed together after that night, like one instead of distant halves, then nothing of this wouldâve happened. If you both just hadnât been so scared of liking another girl, then she wouldnât have gotten with Bear, and she surely wouldâve swept you off your feet and called you her own for the rest of your lives. She knew you craved it, as much as she did. She wanted to run after you, hold you down, and admit everything that had ever been on her mind. How beautiful you looked with your hair down. How sweet you were when you read all her drafts, nodding absentmindedly in approval. How holding you, feeling your warmth, was the only thing that felt right, that felt like home in such a cold world. But she couldnât run after you. The only thing she could do was cry.
You didnât know how long you had run, but long enough for your fingers to lose sensation by the cold and wet rain. Your breath ran out as you approached a street light on the pavement, to recover your breath, you decided to lean back on it. As you tried to calm down; to recover your senses, you closed your eyes for just a second. Just one second. One second too long. You didnât see the car until lights flashed through your eyelids and everything became dark. You felt it hurt, like you had been endlessly stomped on your chest. It felt harder to breathe, but that lasted for only a millisecond before you lost your other senses too.Â
As Nikki sat outside, becoming completely soaked by the rain, Bear and Sarah came out the backdoor, seemingly looking for her and you. She had always been by your side when you were going for a rough patch, that wasnât a secret to anyone. They probably thought that you would be there together, but you werenât. Nikki was the only one left, kneeling and crying unconsolably. Bear crouched down beside her, clearly worried. âWhat happened?â He asked, putting a hand on her shoulder. His touch felt like fire on Nikkiâs bare skin and she couldnât help pulling away from it. She didnât want his touch. She only wanted you. She wanted to cuddle with you on her couch, laughing at some stupid movie, just like you used to do. Not a single word came from her, just sobs, until a single word came out, âY/Nâ, and that was it. No more words were needed. She couldnât even consider saying another word than your name, like it would solve everything. Like the past months would just go away and you would be back by her side, as if everything were okay. She didnât know that you laid out on some street, approximately two kilometres away, unconscious and hurt.Â
âWhat happened, Nikki?â Sarah tried that time, with a softer voice than Bear had. At the sound of someone, someone who hadnât messed everything between you and her up, Nikki whimpered out, âShe left. I donât know where.â As those words came out, Nikki saw how Sarah and Bear only grew more confused, like they couldnât grasp why she would be so distraught by that. âIt will be okay. She probably just went home. It has been quite a night for her. Weâll take you home too, Nikki, so you can go to sleep. You can call her tomorrow,â Sarah said, with that same soft tone, and although Nikki wanted to argue, argue that she didnât want to go home; that she only wanted you, it would be no help. She was probably the last person you wanted to talk to, so she didnât say anything. She let Sarah and Bear help her to Bearâs car. They sat her down in the passenger seat while her sobs calmed down.Â
The car ride was eerily quiet. Everyone was too much in their own thoughts. Nikkiâs head only circulated back to your words. If she had been quicker to reply after your outburst, maybe you wouldnât have run away. Maybe you wouldâve been beside her, so she could comfort you and beg for your forgiveness over and over again. That choosing Bear, the safe option, was wrong and that her heart belonged to you and only you.
Through the rearview mirror, Nikki could spot Sarah with her usual thinking face, like Sarah was trying to figure out what had left you and Nikki so shattered. It was no secret that you had a tendency of running away and hiding, and even if you and Nikki had grown more distant recently, you had never run away from her before, and that was what Sarah probably thought of.Â
In the corner of her eye, she could spot Bear glancing over at her multiple times, like he was searching for something. Something she didnât have to give him.
Bear drove Sarah home first. The silence was interrupted by Sarah getting out of the car, saying through the open window on Nikkiâs side, âThank you for the ride, Bear,â before turning to Nikki, âIâm sure sheâs fine, Nikki. She probably just wants to be alone for now.â Nikki only hummed in response. She didnât want you to be alone, especially when she wasnât sure you were safe and sound. Sarah tried to give her a comforting smile but Nikki looked away, down on her own shaking legs, so she redirected her smile towards Bear instead. In the corner of Nikkiâs eyes, she could tell how both Bear and Sarahâs eyes had softened at each other but she didnât pay mind to that. How could she when the only thing she could think about was you?
As Bear pulled away from Sarahâs house, he finally let out a âI think you should come home with me tonight. I donât want you to be alone when youâre like this.â After hearing that, Nikki snapped, her quiet demeanour all gone. âNo. I donât want to go with you. I only want Y/N. I was so stupid for trying to hide who I was, who I am. I shouldnât have done this. Itâs not fair to either of you.â Words that she had been hiding for so long just poured out. âI love her, Bear. And Iâve been so mean to both of you. I thought that I could be the perfect, ordinary woman if I chose you instead. That everything would be better this way but it isnât fair to anyone. Not you, not Y/N, not me.â Bear physically flinched at her words. This was probably what he had been searching for. The answer for why she didnât want to cuddle with him or kiss him. The reason why she had pulled away earlier. Why this relationship probably felt one-sided for him. After a breath, Bear asked, with his heart on his sleeve, âdid you ever love me?â, and that was the first time during this car ride that Nikki looked at him, truly looked at him. She saw the hurt in his eyes, the same hurt that she had seen earlier this night. âI love you platonically, Bear, but I donât think Iâm able to love you anymore than that. Iâm sorry,â she said. She regretted everything even more. She had always known sheâd hurt Bear if he ever got to know her real feelings, but she couldnât help it. She loved you more. She always wanted to be close to you and feel your hands on her body but she had never wanted that with Bear. She thought that she couldâve just learned to yearn for it, as much as she yearned for you but she couldnât, and nothing in the world would ever change that.Â
âItâs okay. We can be friends if youâd like,â Bear said, but she heard the hurt tone that he was trying to hide. âIâd like that,â Nikki almost whispered in reply, but continued even more quietly, âif you could even consider being my friend after this.â She looked away from Bear, not being able to see his reaction. Bear had always been one of her closest friends, like a brother she never had and now she had destroyed that. Bear reached over to quickly squeeze her thigh before putting his hand back on the steering wheel. âI wonât lie, this hurts like a bitch and it might take time for this to heal, but you are one of my best friends, Nikki. I would like to be friends again.â He was too kind for his own good, Nikki thought. She deserved him screaming at her for playing with his emotions like that, but he was too kind for that. âIâm sorry,â Nikki said as they could see her house in the distance. Bear waited until the car was parked by the curb outside the house until he replied, âI know.â He took a breath before continuing, âThis will take time, but Iâm sure weâll be fine, somehow.â A tear threatened to escape Nikkiâs eye once again and she quietly asked, âCan I give you a hug?â âYou can always give me a hug, Nikki,â Bear replied and put his arms around her. Small, quiet tears left both of their eyes as they hugged. For Nikki, they were tears of regret but also from the platonic love that existed between them. She knew how much this hurt him to hear, but she knew that this hadnât been a secret well kept. She was certain that he knew, somewhere in his heart, that her heart wasnât his. She could tell it by the way he had looked at her after refusing his affection. No matter what he did, he couldnât win her over, and she at least hoped that the friendship they had had before could return. That he would rather have her as a friend than nothing at all. She felt his lips on her forehead, as they lingered. A kiss that said good-bye for both of them. Nikki let her grip slip after a while and got out of the car. She leaned through the car door and said, âIâm sorry,â before closing it after her and headed inside.Â
As she closed her front door, she could hear Bearâs car rolling away. She hated how much she had fucked up. She had fucked up with you, by not being able to love you openly, and she had fucked up with Bear, by playing with his emotions, and right now, she didnât know if she had anyone left. She didnât know if you or Bear would be able to forgive her. Bear had said heâd try, and that was to some comfort but it wasnât a confirmation that he would stay around, and you⊠You, who she had no idea where you were. The woman her heart desired for. She had been so stupid by pushing you away, the one that had always been there for her. She wanted to call you, but she didnât know if she could, so she texted Sarah instead.
Nikki
âHave you heard from her?â
Sarah
âNo, let her cool off for the night, sheâll probably call you tomorrow.â
Nikki couldnât argue with that. Even if all she wanted was to hold you and tell you how much she loved you back, she knew this wasnât the time to talk.
âItâs never good to talk to someone directly after an argument,â you hummed at the movie you and she were watching on her couch. Nikki had her arm around you and you had rested your head on her chest. âWhy not? Isnât it better to go to bed having resolved everything rather than waiting it out?â She asked, looking down at you. Your way of thinking seemed absurd to Nikki. How could you think that a night of restless sleep would be better than to solve everything beforehand? âIf you take it in the morning, both of your minds would be a lot clearer. Youâd have time to figure out how to say what you were thinking in another way,â you hummed once again, saying it like it was as clear as the fact that the grass was green. Nikki pondered over it for a while. Now that you had said it, it didnât seem so weird anymore. âYou are smarter than you look,â Nikki had teased you, ruffling your hair. âShut up. I look as smart as I am,â you replied, with a feigned offended tone. âOf course, you do, Y/N. Of course, you do.â
Sarahâs reply had reminded her of that instance, and maybe you were right. She should probably let you be for the night, no matter how desperate she felt. If there was a risk of pushing you away further by calling, she would push her own feelings aside just for this night. Just to let you think it all through.
Nikki tried to get some rest for the night but her thoughts lingered back to you every time she let her mind stray away. She could see your sweet little smile, feel your warmth beside her, but it was only in her head. You werenât there with her. She was all alone.Â
Nikki woke up the next day by her phone ringing. She practically jumped up, with the belief that it was you, but only got met with confusion. The phone showed a picture of you, Nikki and your mom from a vacation a few years ago. It wasnât you who were calling, it was your mom. In groggy confusion she answered and lifted her phone to her ear. âHello?â
âOh, Nikki,â came through the other line, mixed with quiet sniffling. âWhat is it, Andrea? Has something happened?â Nikkiâs voice sounded as panicked as she felt. Sure, your mom called her once in a while. Your mom had declared her as a second daughter when you and Nikki were still kids, but she had never called with this saddened voice. âY/N,â your momâs voice broke, before continuing, âshe was in an accident last night. A drunk driver hit her while she was walking home.â Your mom sobbed out and Nikkiâs heart stopped. No, no, no. This wasnât real. It couldnât be real. This was all her fault. If she hadnât upset you last night, you wouldnât have left the bar alone. You would be safe at home, probably still sleeping, snoring that cute, quiet, little snore that always amused Nikki every night you had spent together. Y/N, Nikkiâs Y/N, the one who Nikki would fight God herself for, was hurt, possibly evenâŠÂ
âHow is she?â Nikki said, almost slurring on her words by how fast she was speaking. She had to rule out the worst, that it wasnât over. That you wouldnât have left this world, not knowing that she loved you too, that she adored every part of you. âItâs not looking so good. Sheâs in surgery. They said something about punctured lungs and almost a completely shattered leg. She almost died out there,â your mom continued sobbing, but took a breath to continue. âSheâs still in operation. Mike and I have been here all night.â Nikki thanked whatever higher power that you had at least survived, but you were still far out of the woods. Something, anything could go wrong, and she would lose you forever. âWhere are you?â came out of Nikkiâs lips, not as hastily as before, as the shock wave had mostly passed, but not calm, not calm in the slightest. âCedars. Please come. I think she would want you here,â and that was the breaking point. Tears started to roll down Nikkiâs cheek. Of course, she would be there. She wouldnât want to be anywhere else. Nikki tried to pull herself together before answering, âIâm on my way.âÂ
In a matter of minutes, Nikki got dressed and ran out to her own car in her driveway. The sight of the fluffy two pandas hanging from her rearview mirror made her chest feel even tighter.Â
The friend group had visited an amusement park and had the most fantastic day, even if it stung in everyoneâs wallets. At the end of the day, you had seen a claw machine with the two cutest pandas you had ever seen. âThey are just like us,â you had said to Nikki, pointing them out. Nikki had only laughed at you, âWhat resemblance do we have with pandas?â âYou see the one to the right. It looks grumpy, just like you, and the one to the left looks all fun and happy, just like me.â You teased her, and she only playfully rolled her eyes at that. She thought you were really cute whenever you did stuff like this. When you pointed at things and said âthatâs so usâ, but she would never admit that out loud. âIâm gonna win them,â you had said determinedly and almost immediately pulled out a quarter to play. Once again, Nikki rolled her eyes at you, but this time more affectionately.Â
You tried again and again to win them, but failed each and every time. âIâm out of quarters,â you mumbled, clearly disappointed. You had wanted to win them so badly but now you were out of luck. Nikki didnât like that small frown forming on your face. She would win those damn bears if it was the last thing sheâd do, just to see you smile again. It only took her two tries until she got them, smiling proudly at you while handing them over. âFor you,â she exclaimed, and before she knew it, your arms were around her. âThank you! Thank you! Thank you!â You cheered and left a small kiss on her cheeks. She would never admit to blushing that time, but she had definitely blushed.Â
When it was time to go home, you and Nikki waved good-bye to the others and headed to her car, those pandas clutched tightly in your hand. As you sat down in the passenger seat, you let your grip on them go and reached up for the rearview mirror. âWhat are you doing this time then?â Nikki teased as she got in herself. âIâm hanging them here, so youâll always think of me when you drive,â you answered in the same teasing manner.
And reminded her of you, it did. You, now in some OR, were fighting for your life. That memory seemed so distant but still so close. She nearly had to get out of the car to take a breather, but she didnât have time for that. All she wanted was to be at your side as fast as possible. So, she ignored that feeling and drove as quickly as the laws prohibited, and a little faster than that, to the hospital.Â
When she parked her car at the guest parking lot and looked up at the hospital, she couldnât help the feeling of fear running down her spine. Last night, she had stupidly thought that you had gone home. That you were safe and sound, but you werenât. You had been here, probably in surgery while she slept.Â
When she hurried in, she went right to the reception. âY/N Y/L/N, where is she?â The tired receptionist just sighed, like he had to do this all day, like he didnât understand that the love of her life was on the cusp of death. âWhatâs your relationship to the patient?â He muttered out, and that made Nikki freeze. What were you to each other? You werenât friends, you were more than that. You were best friends, yeah, but that wasnât enough either. You had named whatever had been between you as love, just the night before, but it felt wrong to call you her girlfriend. You may be hers in every other way, but not formally. She settled for âbest friend' and to her fortune, the receptionist accepted that answer, after another quiet sigh, and pointed her in the right direction. Her foot rushed forward, with the same hurry that she had before. The endless corridor almost threw her off. Where was she supposed to go again? But she heard a quiet sob further down the corridor. It was your mother. And before Nikki knew it, she started running, sprinting towards the noise. She spotted your parents sitting on some chairs outside a door that said âORâ. She could see the clear distress in your momâs eyes, as your dad tried to comfort her even if he had tears rolling down his own cheeks. They looked up at her and rose up from the stools they had sat on. Their arms opened up to welcome her into the hug. Nikki dived right in. She had loved your parents like they were her own. They had welcomed her into your home every time she had problems with her own parents. Their touch made her finally break down. Tears started flooding down her face, just like it did from your parents. Even if your parents didnât know that you two had a falling out, it felt like a safe place to land.Â
After a while, your mom stuttered out, her voice completely broken. âThey called in the middle of the night. She was hit. Weâve been here all night. We wanted to call you earlier but we wanted to let you sleep.â Nikki couldnât care less about sleep if you were here. If she had the opportunity to be here the entire night, she wouldâve. She wouldâve sat next to your parents, waiting for the doctor to come out, telling them your status. If you were stillâŠ
âItâs okay,â Nikki sniffled back. It was somewhat of a lie. She wouldâve wanted nothing more than to be here with you, but she couldnât imagine what this situation would be like as a mother; a parent. Nikki used to call you her baby in a romantic way, but you werenât her baby for real. You were your parentsâ baby. As harsh as this felt on her, she couldnât imagine how it was for them.Â
The hug became silent after that. No words left either of them, just small sniffles. There were no words needed. She didnât know how long it lasted, but it was interrupted by someone from behind her, clearing their throat. âFor Y/N Y/L/N?â he asked. âYeah?â Your dad sniffled out. âThe operation went well. Weâve restored her lungs to the best of our abilities, and tried to repair the bones in her leg. Weâre hoping it will heal nicely.â Nikki felt a breath that she didnât even know she was holding leaving her.
âWhere is she now?â Your dad was the only one with enough strength to speak up. The doctor sighed, âSheâs on the way to a room in the ICU. Sheâll be in an induced coma for a couple days, to help her recover.â Induced coma? So you would recover? That wasnât what Nikki wanted. She wanted to go into the room; explain everything to you, see you smiling at her, but no. You would be unconscious for a couple days. âCan we see her?â your mom stuttered out. She seemed as desperate, if not even more, than Nikki was. âSheâs in room 331, but I warn you. It may not be a pretty sight.âÂ
Nikki let your parents see you first, settling down in the hallway outside. As much as your parents had accepted her as their own, she didnât want to intrude on their meeting of their daughter that almost died. Her mind wandered back and forth. What would you look like? How did you feel?
When your parents came out from your room, they tried to give her a smile of comfort. âYou can see her if youâd likeâ and Nikki nearly ran out from the chair. She gave them a quick hug before walking in, but nothing couldâve prepared her for what she would see.Â
You had a breathing mask on top of your beautiful face, bandages around your ribs and your leg was propped up in a cast. You looked so⊠broken and vulnerable. All she wanted was to pull it all away from you and drive you home, like it hadnât happened, but she knew you needed this; needed to get well. She dragged her shaking legs towards the plastic chair beside your bed and sat down. âY/n,â Nikki sniffled, âmy baby.â Her hand rose towards yours, pale and cold. She flinched at first, because that wasnât what she was used to. Sure, you had a habit of pressing your cold toes between her calves, practically using her as a human radiator but even your godforsaken toes werenât that cold. You didnât have that small smile when she touched you. You were just⊠there.
Her legs couldnât stop shaking and she felt her breathing getting faster but she couldnât tear her eyes off you. She saw the blood and grime under your nails and she so badly wanted to clean that away, to clear any traces of the night before.
A couple days went by while you were in your induced coma, but Nikki never left your side. She called in sick every shift she had at the store. What would money do if she didnât have you with her?
Sarah came and visited you frequently. Sarah talked to you about everything; from childhood memories to what she had eaten for lunch that day. It warmed Nikkiâs heart whenever Sarah would come around, because she knew how much that wouldâve mattered to you if you knew.
âRemember when we went to Bearâs grandmaâs cottage outside the city by the lake?â Sarah told you and chuckled a little. âYou were a-game at fishing to everybodyâs surprise. You cheered so loudly when you caught that gigantic fish, almost tipping the boat.â A tear rolled down Sarahâs cheek. She had been one of your best friends, and Nikki could tell that this had clearly hit her hard. âYou insisted we shouldâve cooked it for dinner, but neither one of us knew how to prepare a newly caught fish, so you let it go back into the water again.â
Nikki remembered that instance too, of you and your gigantic fish. She had a polaroid of you holding it somewhere in her momâs house. What Sarah said was true, you had been so proud but ultimately let it go back into the water. After letting it go, Nikki had asked you, âare you okay?â which you had responded to with, âyeah, the fish probably deserved a better life than being our food.â Nikki, ever the sweetest, giving money to the homeless, felt proud of you that day. Even though you were so happy about catching that fish, you had let it go.Â
Your smile that day, when you caught it lingered in her mind when Sarah interrupted her. âMaybe you should go home, Nikki,â Sarah gave an attempt of a comforting smile and continued, âgo home, put some food in your stomach, have a shower and then come back.â âNo,â was the only thing that left Nikkiâs lips to that. How could Sarah even consider her going home? She had to be there, by your side, if anything happened. A quiet sigh left Sarah as she tried once again, âNikki, Y/N would want you to take care of yourself,â and that nearly broke Nikki all over again. She knew that Sarah was right. You would want her to take care of herself, eat something more than the granola bars from the vending machine in the hallway; sleep more comfortably than leaning her head on the side of your bed, still clutching your hand as a lifeline. âIâŠâ Nikki stuttered out before mumbling, âI donât want her to be alone. I promised her parentsâŠâ Sarah interrupted her mid sentence, âShe wonât be alone, sheâll have me. I promise to call if anything happens. For Y/Nâs sake.â
Nikki lost that fight. She actually went home, showered, pushed down a frozen pizza and was on her way again. In reality, Nikki was probably gone for about an hour but to her it felt like an eternity. As much as she trusted Sarah with you, she wanted to be there herself. She longed for the touch of your hand, which had grown slightly warmer those last few days.
When she got back to your room, she saw a bouquet on the table beside you. It hadnât been there before. Sarah, who sat in the same chair by your side as when she left said, âBear dropped them off. He didnât want to stay around.â Bear, who also had been your friend for years, had dropped off flowers for you, but didnât want to stay around because of her. She knew that it would take time for him to forgive her, if he ever did, but she still felt guilty. As if she was a hindrance for him to pay his condolences to you.
Touch was the first sense that came back to you. You felt someone holding your hand. Where were you? What happened? The last thing you remembered was running. You had been publicly humiliated by Ian, the man that was supposed to be your boyfriend. Nikki had followed you out and tried to speak to you, but you had blurted out madly that you loved her and then ran. You had run, but what had happened after that?Â
It disturbed you that you couldnât open your eyes, couldnât move your mouth or hear. You only felt that touch on your hand, and you knew that touch. You knew it better than anyone elseâs. Nikki. She was there, the one you loved, but had broken your heart. She was right there beside you. You wanted to give her a sign that you felt her, that her being by your side meant more than anything; even if you were so mad at her, but you couldnât. You were powerless.Â
With enough force, like you had run a marathon with a car on your back, you managed to slightly twitch your finger. You tried everything to get her to know that you were here. You felt her hand grasp yours more tightly and heard mumbles. You wanted to hear her voice but it was good enough for that moment. She was here. What had happened, you didnât know. Your body hurt like hell and you didnât know where you were, but she was there with you. She had chosen you.
Nikki thought her mind was playing games when your hand twitched. She knew they had lowered your dose of medication, for you to wake up, but she had a hard time believing it would be so soon. It had only been two days since they had cut back, and they said it would take longer than that. Approximately three to four days, theyâd said, not two. Either way, if her mind was playing games or not, she tightened the grip on your hand. âY/N, can you hear me, baby?â she tried, stroking the back of your hand. A tear fell down her cheek as she continued, âI love you, baby. Iâm so sorry. Please, come back to me. Come home.â
âCome home,â were the only words that you caught from the mumbling. âCome home.â What did she mean? You canât recall anything after you ran. Where have you gone? A brightness, like the sun was right in front of you, hit you and you squinted. âNikki?â left your lips, in a weak attempt to call out. âIâm right here, baby. Iâm right here. Itâs okay,â you heard. Her voice was shaky, like she was holding back tears. You felt her hand, that wasnât holding yours, moving to stroke your hair. You tried to lean into her touch, but you didnât know if you managed. âIâm so sorry, Y/N. I love you.â If you had been in all your senses, youâd probably cry after hearing that. They were the words you had longed to hear for so, so long. âI⊠love⊠you,â you stuttered out to the best of your abilities. âShhh, donât strain yourself. Wait, I will call the doctor.â Doctor? What doctor? Where were you? In a hospital? You tried to grasp her hand, trying to keep her from leaving. It didnât matter if you were mad and disappointed at her. You wanted her right by your side. You wanted her in every way at all times. âIâll stay right here. I promise.â
A few days had passed once again and you had moved from the ICU to another part of the hospital. The doctors didnât want to leave for another week at least, due to your situation, and you werenât ready to go home, living on your own, just yet. Your memories had started to come back to you, what had happened after you ran away. It scared you a little, remembering the car hitting you and the darkness that had followed but you werenât left to deal with it alone. Friends and family came and visited you. Your room was filled with flowers and âget well soonâ cards. You would lie if you said that you werenât disappointed that Ian hadnât shown up. Sure, you had dated him out of convenience and he had cheated on you, but you had been friends since high school. You thought that he wouldâve cared about you enough to at least send some condolences. Maybe that he cheated on you showed you how he had never cared about you, not at all, just like you had thought that night.Â
You had never voiced your thoughts about that to anyone, just like you and Nikki hadnât gotten the time to talk about what had happened that night either. After waking up, you had convinced her to go back to work and she had quickly argued back. Sheâd told you that she would much rather be by your side, that you shouldnât have to be in the hospital alone, but you had been stubborn. You didnât want her to miss work just because of you. You werenât exactly made of money. But because of that, you didnât have time. At first you had been way too weak to have that conversation and after that you barely got to spend any time alone because of everyone coming and going.Â
Bear and Sarah had come together and visited you once you had woken up when Nikki was out. They had told you everything you had missed these last days. Bear had told you what had happened between him and Nikki, and gave his blessing while trying to jokingly say, âif you hurt her though, I will hunt you down with a pitchfork.â It didnât take a genius to figure out that he was trying to hide his true emotion, but you didnât prude around. Anyone would be hurt in his situation and you didnât want to accidentally cause trouble between Nikki and him. They had been friends for so long and you knew how much they meant to each other, so you didnât want to cause any drama.
It was evening, when Nikki came straight from work to the hospital. The sun outside was setting and you wanted to go out, and of course, Nikki couldnât deny you that. She helped you from your bed down to your wheelchair, which you had because your body was still weak and your injury was too severe for crutches. As she rolled you down the corridors, out to the hospital garden, you struck conversation. âHow was work?â you asked, looking back at her. âIt was fine. The shift rolls way too slowly without you there,â she answered, as she kept her eyes on the hallway, trying her hardest to roll you around without being in the way. You hummed in reply, reading between the lines, and said âI missed you too.â Things hadnât been awkward between you, even if you hadnât talked about it. You acted like you were in a relationship without the title. It wasnât like it had been before, before Bear and Ian. You werenât ashamed anymore. You acted like you had done before, but in public. Neither of you minded when people saw the forehead or cheek kisses you did or when your touch lingered longer than friends did.Â
When she had rolled you out, parking the wheelchair on the side of a bench, you sighed in relief as the sunlight hit your face. It was the first time you had been out since the accident and it felt so refreshing feeling the cold air filling your lungs. Nikki sat down on the bench beside you and took your hand in hers. It felt so right. Her touch always made everything feel better.
Nikki had hated going back to work, but she couldnât deny you anything after the accident. She hated standing by the counter, not knowing how you were doing. She longed to talk about everything that had happened with you, tell you how sorry she was, but she was certain about one thing. She would never try to deny her love for you ever again. She would love you loud and proudly every second if youâd let her. Kissing your forehead and cheek in public felt weird at first but it felt so good to love you like that, so openly.Â
âNikki,â she heard you say. You sounded so soft, so vulnerable. âYeah?â she asked back, intertwining your fingers together. âI was really hurt when you started to date Bear,â you mumbled, looking down in your lap. A quiet and broken sigh left her lips. It was time for that conversation. That conversation you had started that night. That conversation that was left unfinished.Â
âI know, baby. Iâm so sorry.â She probably shouldâve planned what she wouldâve said at that moment, but she hadnât. She had only dreamt of what to tell you, not how, so she decided to tell you the truth; unfiltered, right from the heart.
âI was scared. I thought that I could push my feelings for you aside, like they didnât matter. I tried to date Bear, but he wasnât you. Every time he reached out, I wished it was you. I longed for your touch, your smell, your smile; you.â She could feel your fingers grasping tighter around hers. She felt so stupid after she had done that, but you seemed to love her enough. Love her enough to listen, to stay. âAnd when you started dating Ian, I thought it was over. I thought that I had lost you forever. And when that bastard cheated on you, I was so mad. I wanted to beat the shit out of him, but I prioritized you. I tried to comfort you, and when you said what you said that night, I didnât know what to say. It felt so surreal hearing that you loved me the same way and I didnât have time to answer before you left. I wanted to run out after you but I couldnât and when I heard about your accident, I thought Iâd lost you again. I was so scared.â Nikki teared up, while recalling that night. She couldnât face you. She was too scared of your reply. Â
You could see the tears forming in her eyes. You never wanted to see her cry. She had been in the wrong, yeah, but you had also messed up by trying to date Ian just to make her jealous. When she was done, you took your free hand and cupped her face, turning it to face you. Your fingers stroked her cheekbones as you said, âI know. I did wrong too. I only dated Ian to try to make you jealous. I loved you too and I was also scared. I thought that I wasnât enough when you started dating Bear.â Nikki interrupted you quicker than you realised, âyouâre enough. You are more than enough. You are everything.â A tear left your eyes too as you whispered, âIf I forgive you, can you forgive me?â She didnât reply to that, she didnât have to. She put both of her hands on your cheeks and kissed you. Her lips were so soft and gentle against you. You had never kissed each other before. Sure, on the forehead or on the cheek but never like this, never on the lips. Nothing could ever compare to that feeling on her lips on yours. It was like coming home after years of yearning. You loved her more than anything. All her rights and wrongs, all of her.
Nikki felt the same way. She had yearned for you, just like you had yearned for her. She hadnât been able to reply to her question, not with words. Kissing you was the first thing that had come to her mind and that was exactly what she did; and she couldnât stop kissing you. You, in her arms, on her lips, were addicting and she never wanted to stop.Â
When she heard your breathing getting heavy, she pulled away. She didnât want to risk putting your strained lungs in any danger. âYou have nothing to be sorry for,â Nikki said, stroking your cheeks. âIâm the one who should be sorry,â she tried before you interrupted her âWe both did wrong, Nikki.â You let out a breath and continued, âCan we start over? This time only us, together.â âYou donât even have to ask.â
It was finally time for you to head home from the hospital, and you had longed for it. You had missed the independence of choosing when you eat and sleep. You craved that independence but you knew you couldnât be completely independent even if you got to go home. You were still in your wheelchair, and even if you had finally gathered enough strength in your body to roll yourself more than a few metres, you still needed help to get in and out from it. You couldnât even really dress yourself fully, and it annoyed you to no ends.Â
Nikki had offered to take you in during your recovery. Well, it hadnât really been offering; more like begging. She had been insistent that you could come with her instead of your parents with excuses like that it was closer to town and she had a more flexible schedule than them. It warmed your heart because you had seen the look in her eyes, that warm look she had only reserved for you. She didnât have to beg, because you had always wanted to go with her but didnât want to ask first because you didnât want to risk being a burden to her. When you had told her that, she had scoffed and teasingly said, âSometimes you are so stupid, baby,â before turning into a softer tone. âI would take care of you for the rest of our lives if you needed it,â and left a soft kiss on top of your lips.
The sunrise shone through your hospital window as you laid in your bed watching Nikki, Bear and Sarah move up and down your room, trying to pack down all your belongings. You could touch the tension between Nikki and Bear. As far as you knew, they hadnât talked to each other after that night, but they seemed to hold it together for you.
They asked you about each and every âget wellâ card and the bouquets that had started withering. You didnât care that much about them. Sure, it had been nice that friends and family had cared enough to leave you gifts, but at that moment, you were more enchanted by the girl stressing around, seemingly wanting everything to go perfectly. Her set jaw, that she only when the perfectionist side came out, was clear as day. You wanted to stroke her cheek, telling her that things didnât have to be perfect, that you only wanted to go home with her but it felt wrong. It wasnât hard to tell that Bear was still hurt by Nikkiâs action and you didnât want to rub Nikki and your new relationship right in his face.
It wasnât hard for Nikki to hang out with Bear. She had wanted to be his friend, like they used to be, again and doing this, helping you together, made her feel like maybe he could actually forgive her one day. He had said it that night and you had told her about his teasing remark about you two, but actually being there with him made her feel like it wasnât just words. It would take time and she had prepared for that but she hadnât expected him to act so⊠normal?
Her thoughts were interrupted as her eyes caught yours looking at her. When looking at you she couldnât help feeling her heart skip a beat. You looked so beautiful, even if you were in a hospital gown and had the biggest cast she had ever seen on your leg. She knew she had almost come out as pathetic, practically begging you to come with her, but she wanted it more than anything in the world. She had meant what she had said. She would take care of you in this state for the rest of both of your lives, just for you. The first time you had rolled yourself in your wheelchair, just maybe ten metres, towards her, she had nearly let a tear fall. You looked so tired and weak but you had powered through. It may not have been much in reality but she was the proudest person on the planet. No words could ever describe what she was feeling towards you. You were more than just the person who had hung the stars for her, you were the stars. You were the sun, moon and so much more than that. Anything you might need, she would give it to you on a silver platter.Â
Nikki heard the conversation around her. Bear had said something that had made you and Sarah laugh and she saw something, a look from Sarah. A look towards Bear that Nikki herself had never been able to give him. A weird feeling rose in her heart. It wasnât jealousy or anything like that. That look, she had seen it before, that night. Sarah had looked over at Bear with those exact same eyes, the same eyes Nikki looked at you with. Maybe⊠just maybe, it had been in front of her eyes all along and Bear would get a happy ending with a woman, just not with her. That feeling was nice. She wanted Bear to receive the love he had given her, even if she hadnât loved him back, and a possible candidate was right before her eyes.Â
It didnât take long for Nikki, Bear and Sarah to pack, and that left only one task left, helping you get dressed. Nikki had brought a bag of clothes for you that sat beside your bed. It was her favourite sweater, the one you always used to steal, and a pair of loose sweatpants. âAre you ready to get dressed?â she asked you, walking over to your bed. She saw how your eyes twitched towards Sarah and Bear and it made her protective side flare up. That side of her wasnât new to any means but it had grown after your accident. Her heart couldnât deal with putting you in an uncomfortable position, especially in your then current state, and if that meant she needed to âman upâ, she would. Unconsciously, she puffed up her chest and turned towards them. Sarah and Bearâs hands flew up in the air, like she held them at gunpoint, and Bear had yelped out a âWeâll go outâ and quickly took the bags of your belongings out with them.
When she turned around to look at you again, she heard you chuckle, âCalm down, Nikki. They probably donât want to see me naked either.â A huff of air left her lungs as she muttered, âI donât care about that. I only want you to be comfortable and besides that, they donât get the privilege to see you like that either.â She had learnt your body in an entirely different, more vulnerable way, after helping you with showering that last week you had spent in the hospital, and your body was the most beautiful yet vulnerable thing sheâd ever seen. It wasnât meant to be a show for anyone, it was just you in the most sacred version of yourself. To her muttering, you had only chuckled again and tried, to the best of your weakened state, to turn around and let her untie your hospital gown. Her hands moved slowly and softly to your back and carefully untied it. Your bruises had turned greener than when she had seen them last time. They were still there, but softer, a sign of the accident that she hadnât been able to wash away, like the dirt under your nails, was slowly but surely fading.Â
She moved with careful precision over the bruises as she put on the sweater. She couldnât see your face but she heard the soft sigh you let out of being dressed in that exact sweater. âThank you for taking this sweater,â you whispered as she saw your fingers tracing the pattern. âI only want you to be comfortable, baby,â she whispered back and left a kiss right under your ear. Even if that seemed quite sultry, and she noticed you freezing for just a millisecond, she hadnât meant it in that way. She knew by heart how you always had a tendency to steal her clothes, specifically that sweater, and if just a mere sweater from her made your heart swell, she would lend you her whole wardrobe at the same time.Â
It was a little difficult to get the sweatpants over your cast but with stubbornness, and brute force, they were on. âYou are too kind to me,â you whispered, looking her in the eyes as she was kneeling before you on the floor beside your bed. âDonât be stupid, Y/N,â she retorted as she stood up and transferred you into your wheelchair and quietly muttered, âYou deserve the best.â You had smiled up at her by that and reached for one of her hands when she had finished transferring you. âI love you,â you said while playing with her fingers. Hearing those words leaving your lips never got old for Nikki. It made her heart beat faster every time. âI love you more,â she replied and when she saw you trying to contradict it, she bent down and left a soft kiss on your lips. A quiet laughter came from you as you teasingly said, âyou donât have to kiss me just because Iâm gonna say something you disagree to,â and that made Nikki copy your laughter and replied, âWhy not?â before letting her voice get more vulnerable, âI have years of kisses to catch up on either way so why not make it useful?â She saw how your cheeks blossomed at that but decided to let it go. Even if she just wanted to talk, tease and kiss you for all eternity, she didnât have time. She was taking you home.
As she rolled you out from your bedroom, you met Bear and Sarah that had been waiting for both of you. âWhat took you so long? Have you been making out the entire time?â Bear teased when you two had appeared. It shocked Nikki a bit, that he was comfortable enough to crack a joke like that, but it made her heart swell with love for her best friend. âWouldnât you like to know?â she answered with the same teasing tone. He had started it so it was game on, but Bear only chuckled at her reply and said, âNo, actually. I donât want to know.â
Bear and Sarah walked out of the hospital beside the two of you, helping to put your belongings in Nikkiâs car while she moved you from the wheelchair to the passenger seat. When Nikki was folding your wheelchair to fit into the car, she saw both Bear and Sarah come to give you a hug as you thanked them for helping you through it all. âYou would do it for either of us in a heartbeat. Thereâs no need to thank us,â she heard Sarah say to you and after you all had bidded your good-byes, Nikki closed the passenger door for you and moved onto the driverâs side. As she sat down in the car, her hands on the steering wheel, she looked over to you and asked, âReady to go home?â You only replied with, âHome is wherever you are.â
content: hurt/comfort. fem! reader dealing with internalized homophobia. 3.7 k words.
summary: you and nikki have had a thing going on between you for a while, but what happens if that secret would come out?
notes: this turned into an entirely different direction than intended. this was supposed to be a fun, short fic but turned into something completely else. if internalized homophobia is a sore subject for you, I do not recommend reading this!
it was trivia night in that bar downtown and like usual, you and your group were seated in the far front, completely captivated by the game, well most of you. you, nikki and sarah were a-game with that night's questions, answering them without flaws, but the other two were completely in their own heads. ian was mostly there for the drinks and fear of missing out on a group hangout and bear was staring at nikki, like an uncomfortable amount, with basically heart eyes. you only rolled your eyes at that, knowing his attempts of getting her attention were futile.
no one in the group knew how you and nikki had for months spent nights talking over the phone, flirting over text, how your hugs lingered a little longer when you spent time together alone without the others. you and nikki werenât exclusive, but neither of you had been seeing someone else during these months so maybe it wasnât completely fruitless flirtingâŠ? as far as you knew, the group didnât know about you and nikki, but if theyâd figured it out, the gossip would spread like wildfire. compared to nikki, who was confidently public with liking girls, you werenât. it was a big deal for you to let out something so personal to the public. nikki, who had been your best friend years before whatever was between you, knew that and kept it a secret, for you.Â
the questions rolled in feverishly, with the next one being âwhat is a group of flamingos called?â you buzzed the button without thinking it over with the group and called out âa flamboyance,â which was correct, of course. all nights playing trivia werenât for nothing. âsince when are you a flamingo expert?â nikki teased you, lightly shoving your shoulder. you let out a little chuckle and opened your mouth to reply when ian interrupted you. âyeah, y/n, you are such a nerd.â it wasnât in the same teasing tone as nikki had said, and you didnât really know if he had meant it in a joking manner or not, but you were once again interrupted, only this time by nikki. âdonât be an ass, ian. we got a point, and every point we get is closer to the victory beer,â she snorted back, not playing around with you, like usual. she always got to tease you endlessly but when someone tried to do it back, with a tone she didnât like, she retaliated. âwell then y/n, get me that beer faster,â he answered, raising his third pint for the night that was almost empty. ianâs eyes werenât pointed at you though. they pointed to the girl right beside you, the girl who had just defended you. he always had that habit of annoying you when you got close to nikki but he had a glint in his eyes, like he knew something he shouldnât. it made a chill run down your spine but it was calmed when nikki patted you on the shoulder and gave you a sweet smile. although it seemed like nikki didn't approve of that comment either, she had decided to play nice. her smile has always been one of your greatest weaknesses. she could say basically anything, but at long as she smiled at you like that, it didnât matter.Â
you caught bear watching her smile towards you, seemingly jealous, but you didnât really mind that. he could be jealous all he wants but youâre still her number one. she had said it herself one night.
you and nikki were talking over facetime, discussing everything from life to death and everything in between. âwhat do you mean âyouâre lacking love to inspire you to write your bookâ? have you seen the way bear looks at you? the man is fully encaptivated by you, like he wants you forever and ever,â you teased her, after she had complained about having trouble with inspiration. it was a calculated move by you, that you had carefully laid out. you knew bear liked her, maybe a little over âlikeâ but thatâs another discussion, and you wanted to know her thoughts of it. as you had started falling for her a little bit, you wanted to locate your competition. âno. ew. donât say that. heâs like a brother and nothing else.â her face scrunched in disgust at the idea of her and bear being lovers. âoh, like hansel and gretel, but grown up and become incestuous?â you continued pulling her leg with a big smile plastered on your face. only what she didnât know was that your smile wasnât just accompanied by the teasing, but also from your pleasure of her not seemingly having any other potential love interests. âew, youâre psycho. stop it,â she called out, putting on a disgusting look, but you could still see the small smirk on her lips.Â
that was why you could confidently rule him out of the equation. yeah, sure, there were other signs too. like how she touched you more than him and leaned more into you when talking, but that was nothing compared to the confirmation.Â
as the trivia questions kept rolling in and the night moved on, you started to feel something nudging your ankle. you didnât have to be a genius to figure out what it was as when your eyes met nikkiâs from beside you, a secret smirk struck her lips. she was trying to play footsies, that cheeky girl. your cheeks blossomed a little, but whose cheeks wouldn't when such a beautiful girl was trying to play footsies with you? of course, you reciprocated it, a little hesitantly with the fear of being caught, but still reciprocated. her closeness had always made your heart flutter and then, when doing such an act in public, you couldnât help to hear your own heartbeat rise more than usual.Â
nikki had always had her way of being secretly flirty when you were out in public. it was like she adored you and wanted to shower you with affection all the time, but since your mutual agreement, she only did it secretly. for example, when the group were discussing the answer to a question, nikki leaned in, close enough for you to feel her breath hitting your ear. âyou look really good tonight,â she whispered, not sultry, but rather in a tender way, like she had thought about it all night and wanted to let you know. if your cheeks had blossomed when she had started playing footsies, which she was still doing by the way, your cheeks transformed into a tomato red shade.Â
when nikki leaned back a little, you made eye contact. if you werenât in such a public environment, you would beg her to kiss you. you were completely encaptivated by her. her smile, her eyes, her warmth oozing from her. maybe you should just let her kiss you and let that be your come out story⊠but of course, the moment had to be ruined by sarah, who seemed oblivious, despite the bluntness of both of your actions. âwell, do you know the answer? is jupiter or saturn the biggest planet?â it seemed like the moment had only been interpreted as you discussing the answer. both you and nikki cleared your throats, it seemed like she, just like you, had forgotten everything around you except the other, and answered at the same time, âjupiter.â
the trivia night ended shortly after and therefore the group were planning on going to the next bar, and then a next and a next probably, but you werenât interested in going. sure, it would be fun to spend more time with the group, but you were tired. it had been an exhausting day already and you actually wanted to be sober enough to drive yourself home. you all stood up from the table in agreement to leave this bar, at least, but you still had to tell the others that you werenât planning on following them elsewhere. when you had stood up and prepared to push your stool in, nikki beat you to it. she always had that way to act like a gentleman towards you. if others could read nikki as well as you could, it would be obvious that it was in a romantic manner and not just like a joke between friends. she beamed up at you after pushing it in, and you jokingly made a little bow. âwhy, thank you, my lady.â a little blush rose on her cheeks but she reciprocated the joking manner, ânothing short of the best for my woman.â
when you all had reached the parking lot, ian wrapped his arms around nikki and sarah, who seemed confused by his sudden action. âi take sarah and nikki and you take bear,â he ordered you, like you didnât have a say in it. it was weird that he was trying to decide this then. you and nikki had come together and ian had driven both sarah and bear but all the sudden, that wasnât in play anymore. no one seemed happy by that request, at least by their facial expressions. of course, you and nikki would complain about not going with each other. bear clearly wanted to go with nikki so he could probably try to smooch her in a car and sarah wanted to go with bear, because of her blatant crush on him. if bear opened his eyes and realised nikki wasnât interested, there would be a girl happily waiting for him, but that was another discussion.Â
you muttered to ian, his usual asshole behaviour didnât exactly put a smile on your face. âactually, i was planning on going home. iâm tired.â it made bear let out a little relieved sigh, which you were probably the only one to notice. if you didnât go, his chances of being with nikki were higher, but his dreams didnât come true. âif y/n is not going, iâm not either,â nikki exclaimed, pushing away ianâs arm and moving to your side. a little smirk tugged at your lips. you had always liked when it didnât go ianâs way after he had planned something without including othersâ thoughts.
âwhy, nikki? so you can fuck y/n in her car?â
bear and sarah gasped and they looked shocked. their eyes turned to you and nikki and widened with disbelief, like they hadnât seen that coming, but seemed like they were putting the puzzle pieces together. like the truth was always in front of their noses, like it had been, and they had finally figured it out. the smirk that had been on your face faded as quickly as it appeared on ianâs face. a fury bloomed all over your body, but it also had an edge of panic. you hadnât wanted the others to know about you and nikki. not because you were ashamed of her, not in any way, but you were a little ashamed of yourself. since you had grown up in a not so welcoming environment and were taught that people like you should hide, you really had wanted to do this at your own pace, and now that was seemingly ruined.
âshut the fuck up, ian! you donât get to come here and tell us anything you donât know anything about.â nikkiâs voice drew you out of your trance. it seemed like nikki hadn't told him which led you to the conclusion that he had figured it out on his own. he had noticed your lingering touches and your body language. you felt your hands start to shake and your eyes start to water, but you couldnât act weak now, then everything would be even worse.Â
âcome on, y/n. letâs go,â she continued, final in her tone. you both got to your car, leaving the others behind. you didnât know what to do. what were you supposed to do? your biggest secret was out, much to your dismay. it had been your story to tell but it was stolen from you. nikki put her hand on your shoulder and said softly, âlet me drive.â as much as you wanted to brush it off, act like this didnât hurt you, you handed her the keys. you were in no condition to drive anyways. nikki moved to open the door for you and you sat down, brain far too filled with your thoughts that you barely noticed her doing it. what would happen now? would the group split because of this? you didnât really care much for bear, since you just never had been so close, but you actually liked sarah. she was a sweet and funny friend youâd had for ages. would your friendship evaporate because of this? a part of you knew that she wouldnât judge you for anything but what if she took ianâs side because of her undying crush on bear? you noticed that you had zoned out when you woke up from your trance by nikki sitting down in the driverâs seat and driving out from the parking lot. you could see ian, bear and sarah on your way by. sarah seemed to be yelling at ian, pointing her finger into his chest. it was nice knowing you at least got one friend backing you up, but bear just stood frozen. like he couldnât comprehend that nikki had someone else.
âiâm so sorry,â you heard nikki say from beside you as she put her hand on your thigh, not realising until then that it had been shaking, and gently stroked it with her thumb. her warmth gave you the comfort you desperately needed at that moment. âi⊠i wanted to tell them myself. at my own pace,â you whispered out, looking at her hand on your thigh. her hand squeezed your thigh a little as she focused on the road. âi know, baby. itâs okay. it will be fine,â she tried to comfort you, and then continued, sounding more annoyed. âianâs a dick. weâll stop hanging out with him.â you almost let out a broken sniffle and said âokay.â a silence sat in the car with you as nikki continued to drive. âyou can come home with me if youâd like. i donât want you to be alone now.â you grabbed her hand on your thigh and intertwined your fingers with hers. she knew you so well. you didnât want to be alone tonight, not after that. âplease,â you whispered out, sounding too vulnerable for your liking. the silence fell once again, this time not as cold but it still tugged at your heart. you wished the night had gone differently. that ian wouldnât be that much of a dick for no reason. that you hadnât gone out at all.Â
you reached nikkiâs house after a while, and she parked in her driveway. when she had pulled the parking brake and killed the engine, a sigh left her lips. an exhausted, worried and regretful sigh. her head turned to you and her hand that had been on the steering wheel reached up to your cheek, softly stroking your cheekbone. âiâm so sorry, baby. if i knew that ian would do something like that, i wouldnât have been so obvious at the bar earlier.â âitâs not your fault, nikki. you couldnât have known,â you answered, trying to avoid eye contact. nikki frowned slightly at that and pulled herself up from her seat to give you a sweet kiss on your forehead. it was the first kiss between you that had actually meant something. sure, you had kissed each otherâs cheeks at parties for fun but it had never had a deeper meaning, not in that way. her lips lingered, soft and warm, and you threw your arms around her like you couldnât bear there being a distance between you. her arms came around you and almost pulled you over the centre console of the car. her hand stroked strands of your hair and you buried your face in her neck, filling your nose with her familiar scent.Â
you sat like that for a while, having nothing to say, just soaking up each otherâs closeness. it felt good to have someone know you so well. after what felt like an hour, but was probably five minutes, she whispered, âcome on, baby, letâs go in.â you reluctantly let her go so both of you could move. as you opened the car door, you felt the cold air hit your face. it gave you a sense of freedom but also a reminder of reality, of what had happened just twenty minutes ago.Â
nikki came over to your side of the car, put an arm around your waist and led you in. her house felt as familiar as usual. you had spent endless evenings there, with just her, doing whatever you felt like. you had cuddled on the couch, crawling into her during horror movies as she laughed at you. cooking, and burning, countless dishes in the kitchen while dancing to the music from her phone. for fuckâs sake, you had your own stash of clothes in her bedroom drawer, which you barely wore, because she always insisted on you wearing her clothes instead. âdo you need anything? water? food?â nikki asked, like always, making sure you were taken care of. âno. i just want to go to bed,â you mumbled back, wanting just to close your eyes and forget everything. nikki smiled at you and tugged you towards her bedroom, âthen weâll do exactly that.âÂ
once in the bedroom, nikki handed you a pair of her shorts and shirt for you to wear, which you gladly did. wearing her clothes felt like a protective layer from the outside world, like you were secure from any harm just by some fabric sewn together. after changing, you looked at nikki, whoâd also changed to pyjamas, her lips tugged up just a little, in that smile she seemed to only keep for you. âyou look really cute in that,â she said softly, with a hint of pride in her voice. you blushed a little before retorting teasingly, âyou are such a flirt.â âonly for you,â she smirked and kissed your cheek before laying down on the bed. her bold action made you blush even further but you lay down next to her. she quickly put one arm under your head as a pillow and the other around your waist, spooning you from behind. maybe it would be okay to be out as queer if you got to have nikki with you all the foreseeable nights ahead. if you got to come home to her and live a domestic life, just like you always dreamt of.Â
you stayed like that for quite a while, the only noises being both of you breathing and the occasional sound of the sheets moving. you stroked her arm that was around your waist while her hand snaked under the hem of your shirt, softly laying on your bare stomach. it was the peace, the familiarity you craved after such a night. but your thoughts were interrupted by a buzz from the nightstand, your phone. a fear tugged down your spine as you were reminded of everything that had happened before. you considered ignoring it, but you knew you wouldnât be able to relax again until you knew what it was. was it sarah or bear? did they text you that whatever you and nikki had was disgusting and didnât want to be a part of it? you pulled up your phone, the background being you and nikki from a year ago, drunk out of your minds, smiling widely at the camera while having your arms around each other. once you unlocked your phone, you could read the text you had received.
sarah
âiâm sorry for tonight. ian is an asshole. even bear agrees. we took a taxi to bearâs and left ian to himself. i hope we can still be friends after this <3â
her text warmed your heart in so many ways. maybe you wouldnât be all alone once people knew about you. maybe your dad had been wrong. maybe you werenât a âdisgusting sinnerâ for liking girls, loving girls, loving a girl. you were still not out of the woods about those thoughts and you knew that yourself. all of the condescending thoughts you had about yourself would live with you for the rest of your life, but maybe they would fade over time. if sarah and bear, who seemingly didnât agree with ianâs outburst, maybe they could accept you, just like you were.
nikki smiled at you, with a smile youâd never seen on her. she seemed so happy for you, so proud, like she felt everything with you. âsee, baby. i said it would be fine,â she whispered as she stroked your stomach under your shirt. âi thought⊠i thought thatâŠâ your eyes started to water as a feeling of being overwhelmed settled in your body. you couldnât have imagined a better outcome from such an experience. âshhh, itâs okay. nothing bad will happen. they still appreciate you as a friend.â a sniffle left your nostrils as you turned around to face nikki. seeing her smile from the front made you smile back at her. âyou were right,â you mumbled at her while looking into her warm eyes. âi usually am,â she teased you back and kissed your forehead again. it made you feel a little giddy and you hid your face in the crook of her neck. her hand that had been stroking your stomach had moved to your back. you could feel her warm fingertips stroking it slowly but surely as she pulled you closer.
âyou know how i used to complain about not feeling enough love to inspire my writing?â she asked, breaking the silence with a low tone. her body still felt warm around you, with her legs tangled with yours. âyeah?â you replied. âi lied. iâve felt it for so long,â she continued, her breath hitting your ear. âso, am i your muse then?â you asked her teasingly. âalways been, baby.â

summary: being at ian's fourth of july party brings out your worse sides and the truth you been hiding forever.
notes: this is heavly inspired by sombrs' song "my body isn't ready", if you can't tell. and also this is my first time writing on my own, scary. this fic is mostly oc!nikki. she deserved so much better.
you didnât necessarily want to be there. as usual, ian threw an excessive fourth of july party with all his friends, their friendsâ friends and so on. the living room, covered in red, blue and white decors, was filled with loud noises from drunken and high people, all tables full of half empty glasses and sticky surfaces. it wasnât that the party was bad per se, you just hadnât been in the mood. not that day, and not in quite some time. this party seemed like what you would imagine a college party wouldâve felt. you didnât go to college, you got stuck here in l.a with the same friend group from middle school as your coworkers. a friend group that didnât really heightened your mood.Â
already mentioned, ian, the casual fuck boy, not usually caring much about others. sarah, a quite nice artsy girl, trying to get into college at twenty-four. bear, a complete weirdo, whom you didnât like but youâve been friends for so long and he was in your friend group so what can you do? and then lastly, nikki⊠nikki. how could you begin to explain nikki?Â
you had known her way longer than the others. when you were about five years old, you had biked on your new bike, without those awful training wheels, up and down your street but ultimately fell, just like your usual clumsy self, and a girl your age approached you as you sat on the pavement, clutching your scraped knees with tear filled eyes. âi saw you fall, are you okay?â the girl crouched down beside you and when she got close, you recognized her, she lived further up the street. her kind eyes, that little freckle under her left eye, made your breath hitch before you blinked and came back to your senses, making a tear fall down your chubby cheek. âno, i scraped my knees. it hurtsâ you cried out, the feeling was terrible for your, little too sensitive, five year old soul. âoh no, donât cry.â her little hand reached out to wipe off your tears and then leaned down to kiss your scrapes. âmy mama always does that when iâm hurt. i hope it made it a little better.â you blushed a little, not that you would ever admit that, as she helped you stand up. âthank youâ you sniffled. you were old enough to realise that kisses on physical wounds didnât really make it better but it soothed the psychological wounds. âyou can come to mine. my mama can help youâ the girl, whose name was still unknown, helped you up and supported you to her house. her mom was on their patio, knitting something, when you came. âoh nikki, who is your new friend?â she asked, not really noticing your injuries. nikki. that was her name. âmama, sheâs hurt. can you help?â little nikki asked her mom and when her mom noticed your scrapes, she helped you clean and bandage them, then treated you and nikki for one glass each of lemonade. it felt better then, both physically and mentally. it was quite peaceful with nikki and her mom on the patio, enjoying the fresh drink after such emotional turmoil. âwhatâs your name?â nikki asked, leaning her whole body towards you on the bench. ây/nâ you mumbled, a little shyly. ây/n. i like your name. can we be best friends forever?â
and that you were. from that moment that you scraped your knees, through the awkward preteen phase, during high school when you met the others, after graduation, you stayed best friends. you and nikki were just like two peas in a pod, always by each other's side. you couldnât tell when you fell in love with her. it wasn't like you just woke up one day and decided to fall in love with her. you actually didnât want to love her in the way you did. you didnât think, already as a teen nor then, that she could ever love you back in the way you did. sure, the line between best friends and lovers, sometimes blurred. like when you borrowed her clothes a little too much, when your hugs lingered a little too long and when someone flirted with one of you the other gave a death glare. but that wasnât anything. friends borrow each other's clothes. friends can have long hugs. friends deathglare someone trying to flirt with their friends to see if the charmer reached the right standards.
earlier that day, when ian sent a reminder of his party in the group chat and you replied that you werenât sure if you could go, nikki had hastily called you. âplease y/n. can you please come tonight? it will be fun. you need to get out of the house more. iâll be there with you the entire timeâ she promised you over the phone. you could hear the worry in her voice and the way she said it, that she had noticed your recent change. usually, she wouldâve been harder on you, more forcefully made you go, but her perceptive self saw right through you. it wasnât that something really had happened to cause your sudden change in behaviour. during those last few weeks, you had started noticing more flaws in your appearance. you had always been a little insecure, yeah, but not like this. you felt like your skin started to sit weird on your body, your nose had grown bigger and your hair was thinning out. the new flaws that youâve noticed probably weren't even real but it had made you uncomfortable in your own skin. you didnât want people to see you, and that was why youâd tried to decline the party but of course nikki had convinced you otherwise. even if you usually told nikki everything, you didnât want to worry her. she had a habit of worrying about you and you didnât want that. âokay, nikkiâ you had sighed back to the other line.Â
so you came to the party, just as you told nikki, but as you expected, you felt uncomfortable. before the party, you had changed your outfit a million times, feeling like nothing sat right, until you found a red dress that matched the theme close enough and looked good enough. nikki had complimented your dress when she picked you up, which made your heart flutter a little, but when you showed up to the party, watching others look flawless in their attire, the feeling came back. you had asked to borrow nikkiâs jacket to cover up. her nose scrunched a little at that, confusion mixed with worry, but she had lent it to you. you covered up yourself as you sat down on ianâs couch, next to nikki.
at first, it had been fun catching up with your friends, but you felt so out of place. you drank two glasses of pina colada, but like when you usually drink in a bad mood, it just made it worse. you curled up, tugging your legs under your chin. nikki, who still hadnât said anything, knew your mood. it was quite easy to tell by the way she had tugged you closer to her and laid your head on her shoulder. each time nikki was near it felt so much better but it tugged on another part of your sensitive heart. even if she was your safe space, you didnât want her to see you when you didnât want to see yourself. you wanted to be pretty for her, just as anyone would want to be in front of their crush, but you didnât feel pretty. your thoughts had been interrupted by a man, whom you barely recognized, possibly ianâs distant cousin. it didnât matter who it was, but he had asked nikki to talk to him outside on the patio and she had reluctantly pulled herself from you and went with him, offering you a comforting smile as she left.
you tried really hard to ignore the faint feeling of jealousy spreading across your body. even if the man had made nikki stop looking at you, not making her able to see the flaws youâve recently had seen in your own appearance, you longed for her company. you loved her and wanted her close, wanted her to choose you, but she didnât. you didnât even know if she liked girls.Â
after twenty minutes, she still hadnât come back. you had already been in a bad mood before arriving here and now that youâd gotten a little tipsy, it brought a bad buzz, one that made you even sadder, rather than the familiar bubbly buzz you used to get. you only wanted to go home, and you should probably tell nikki that since you came together but that was the last thing you wanted. if she knew how you felt, that you just wanted to go home, you knew sheâd probably ditch the party with you. you wanted her to have fun as she had looked forward to this for the last week, bringing it up every time you spoke. her heart was just so compassionate, and it would break you if she gave up this just because you werenât having a good time. you sat up from the couch, silently moving through the crowds of people, reaching ianâs front door, opting for an irish goodbye, most likely texting nikki later that night that you were just tired and wanted to restâŠÂ
you suddenly bumped into someone, bear. âleaving so soon?â he asked, more of politeness and not real friendship. you know how you didnât like bear? yeah, this was one of the reasons why. it had never felt genuine to talk to bear, like he had never really liked you. he always clung to nikki when the friend group hung out, and since you and nikki were so close, you were always there, but sometimes he just acted like you werenât. nikki always denied that he did that. she saw him as a brother and he just couldnât seem to get that hint. you saw the way bear looked at her. but you wouldnât necessarily call the look in his eyes as love, but rather a possessive look, like he owned her. once ian had told you, after his third joint, that the reason why bear didnât like you was because nikki was in love with you, and that just seemed absurd. you should always take what ian said with a grain of salt, but that was just too unlikely, nikki was definitely not in love with you, so you just interpreted it to mean that bear didnât like you because you took nikkiâs time and attention from him.
âyeah, bear, just tired. donât tell anyoneâ you muttered back, not enjoying this chat at all and just wanting to head home. âhave a nice eveningâ you continued, and walked out the front door. the nice breezy air hitting your face, leaving the nasty smell of alcohol, smoke and probably vomit from inside as you started to walk. walking to your house would probably take you twenty-five minutes but you didnât mind. it wouldnât hurt to sober up from this bad buzz. you felt like you were in a sad movie as you walked, kicking the rocks on the pavement while staring at the ground. it was a clique really. you were sad, and a bit jealous and now you had just left without saying good-bye.Â
you thought about nikki the whole way home. what did that man even want her that took so long? did they start flirting? is that why she hadnât returned? you didnât want to think of that, or be so possessive about it. you didnât have a claim on her. she was her own and you were just her best friend. you had known for years that you should prepare for nikki to get into a relationship, and as much as that would hurt, youâd be happy for her. you just wanted her to be happy. interrupting your thoughts, a ding from the side pocket of your, nikkiâs, jacket pocket, that you had stolen.
nikki <3Â
âwhere are you?â
she would most likely be upset that you had left without telling her, but you didnât know what to reply. what were you supposed to say? âoh sorry, i just hated the way i looked and felt jealous you went out with some guyâ no, you wouldnât tell her that, so you just put your phone back down in the pocket, leaving her on âdeliveredâ. âyou were almost home anyways. you could reply thenâ you tried to justify yourself. you knew she wouldnât accept that, but you had to figure out what to tell her and how to word it so you just kept walking.
soon enough, you arrived home, unlocking your door and entering your dark house. you tugged off your shoes and changed out of your current, uncomfortable, party outfit, into your pajamas, one of nikkiâs old t-shirts and a pair of shorts, and tugged yourself into bed. in your lightly drunken self, you actually forgot to text nikki back and opted for mind-less scrolling instead until you got another notification, and another and another.
nikki <3Â
âwhy arenât you answering?â
ây/n, this is not funnyâ
âiâm worried about youâ
âfuckâ you sighed to yourself. why did you have to forget? now she probably would be even more upset that you left. you felt the guilt spread all over your body as you sat up, starting to type back. you had never meant to upset her this much. yeah, you had expected her to be annoyed, but not like this. the last message wasnât from annoyance. nikki was hard to read but by being her best friend for almost twenty years, you could tell she wasnât just pissed.
you
âiâm sorry, i left. i was tired and wanted to rest.â
âiâm really sorry for worrying you <3â
you let out another sigh, hoping to blow it over quickly.
nikki <3Â
âyou left???â
âiâve been searching for you everywhereâ
âwhat the fuck y/nâ
âiâm coming overâ
this was exactly what you didnât want to happen. you just wished she couldâve had a fun night without having to worry about you and your stupid insecurities.
you
âno nikki, enjoy yourselfâ
âiâm just tired and it shouldnât ruin your nightâ
nikki <3Â
âi know youâ
âyou arenât just tiredâ
âcome on baby. just let me come overâ
fuck, why did she have to call you baby now? she usually called others babe in a joking manner, like even the bartender at trivia night was her âbabeâ, but she kept âbabyâ only for you and that was your greatest weakness. you always caved when she called you baby, and she knew that, that cheeky bastard.Â
you
âthe door is unlockedâ
you texted back, like said before. you caved when she called you baby and when nikki had made up her mind, nothing would stop her. it wouldnât help to tell her otherwise now. you had lost, like most times.Â
when you laid back down again, you tugged the blanket tighter around you and just waited. what would happen when she showed up? you could tell by her choice of words that she wasnât mad but rather worried but what if that changed for the period it would take her to leave the party and show up?
soon enough you heard the door opening and closing then footsteps from the hallway. âbaby?â nikki called out, her voice⊠sounding so hurt. it broke your soul, really. you had never meant to hurt her. her voice in that fragile state had always been one of the worst noises you could imagine. âin here!â you called out, it wasnât really your strongest voice either. you felt embarrassed and stupid and like a bad friend andâŠÂ
nikki appeared in the doorway to your dark room, as the only light was the street lights outside and your phone, which was forgotten as soon as you heard her voice. the dim light made you only see the outlines of her face, and it didnât have the shape of the smile youâd fallen in love with. there was a small pout. âwhy did you leave, y/n? i was so worried.â she said, sounding less fragile when she could actually see you but it was still holding that hurt tone.Â
you felt speechless. why did your own insecurities ruin everything? if youâd just been normal, this wouldnât have happened. ânikkiâŠâ you stutter out before your voice breaks and a tear falls down your cheek. after a breath, you cried out âiâm so sorryâ. how pathetic could you be? you had hurt her feelings by just leaving and now you were the one crying. âshe shouldâve just left, found a better best friend, not an ugly pathetic oneâ you thought for yourself, but that was clearly not a mutual thought as nikki practically flew to your side. she sat beside you, pulling you into her arms as one of her hands strokes your hair. âsssh baby, itâs okayâ soothingly, she hummed back to you. only she could give you comfort in this way. in the way she did back when you fell off your bike at five, when a stupid boy broke your heart in high school, when your anxiety became too much. she rocked you softly back and forth as you broke apart on her shoulder, the excessive amount of make-up youâd put on earlier probably ruined her shirt but you couldnât bring yourself to care. youâd buy her millions of this exact shirt if she just held you like that a little longer.
when your tears started to still and your cries turned into sniffles, she pulled apart a little, just so she could see your face. âwhatâs wrong, y/n?â she asked, reaching up to wipe some off your mascara from your tear streaked cheeks. âi just feel so ugly, nikki. my body looks weird. my boobs are too small. my face looks out of proportions. my nose is too big.â your thoughts puked out and as those words left your lips, you wanted to start wailing again. how could she always bring you to tell the truth when you didnât want to? when you only wanted to hide from the world? but you knew you could never hide from nikki. you canât hide from her like you hide from yourself.
her face constorted into a confused but so saddened look, like she couldnât ever understand how you could see yourself in that way. âno, baby, listen to me. you are the most beautiful girl iâve ever seen. you are so beautiful, so, so beautiful.â she almost whispered, holding your cheek a little tighter as if she was trying to convey her words via touch.Â
oh, how you wished you couldâve believed her. that her words were the truth. another sniffle came from you and you mumbled âi wish i was. i wish i was pretty enough.â
âpretty enough for youâ you didnât plan on saying that either, and frankly, you didnât even realise what you said either. the only thing you actually consciously did was digging your face into the crook of her neck. a familiar fragrance filled your nose. that sweet vanilla perfume that she had worn forever and the unique scent from herself. you desperately searched for the familiarity. the warmth of her hands, the sound of her breathing and heartbeat from her pulsepoint.Â
âi love you, nikki. i want you but the mirror wonât let me.â
you only cry further, pouring out your heart in a way neither of you probably expected. it wasnât until nikki froze and her breath hitched, becoming almost completely stale, you realized what you had said and pulled away. âiâm so sorry. i didnât mean that.â all you could try was to backtrack what you had said. she didnât feel the same. she couldnât feel the same for you. and now that youâd stupidly said whatâs been on your heart for so long, you risked losing her. what if she didnât even want to be your friend after you admitted your feelings? what if she was too weirded out by you and wouldnât talk to you ever again? you may have loved her, but she was your best friend first. your rock. your lighthouse in the middle of a dark sea youâd been sailing for too long. your⊠everything.
she looked at you with a look you didnât recognize. it wasnât her small little smile when she was flustered. not her smirk when she teased you. not her annoyed expression when you had ragebaited her on purpose. not her mad look when you lost at trivia night. nothing. her expression portrayed nothing. you always thought you could read nikki in every situation, but clearly not this one. you couldnât figure out what she was thinking for the life of you and that was clearly a bad sign. you had never seen nikki act with you in any other way than when you were best friends, and then, when that couldâve been ruined forever, just by your own stupid insecurity, maybe you had to face reading her as something else. just as a friend, or something way worse, an ex-friend.Â
you knew that she liked boys, just by the way that she had gone out with ianâs cousin, or not clearly declining bearâs advances towards her. so why would she ever consider you as someone in a romantic setting? you were a woman for fuckâs sake, and sheâd never shown any signs of being interested in women, so why would she now?
her face still carried no expression, until it did. she reached out with both of her hands towards your cheeks. nervously, you pulled back, but she didnât stop, just reached longer. her thumbs stroke your cheekbones simultaneously. it carried a gentleness that you, even from her, the one always the most gentle with you, wasnât used to. she stared at your lips for a few seconds, and you couldnât resist doing the same until she looked up, looking you in your eyes. âtell me you meant it, baby. tell me you love me again.â she whispered, with a tenderness just as soft as her gentle grab on your cheeks.
âwhaâŠ? are you sure?â you mumbled back, embarrassed, shocked by her reaction. what was she doing? was she pulling your leg? no, nikki would never be that mean, and you knew that tenderness was maybe the most vulnerable youâd ever heard her.Â
ây/n, say it again. pleaseâÂ
âi.. i love youâ you stuttered that time. you had always liked knowing the next place, knowing what would happen each and every second. maybe thatâs why you pulled away when things got complicated. why you left the party, because you couldnât face not knowing what happened out there on the patio.Â
she looked at you and you tried to pull away once again. this was it. now you had poured your pathetic heart out and the decision was completely up to her. it was her time to respond and you couldnât change her answer, no matter what. she couldâve leaned into it, continuing this raw, heartfelt situation, or just completely ignored it, letting it pass her by. âdonât pull away from meâ she said quietly, sounding hurt by the way you were acting. âstay here. with meâ
the only thing you could muster was stop trying to physically pull away. you had already messed up so much in just one night, and hurting her even further wouldnât help the chances of her still wanting to be your friend, despite everything. âiâm sorryâ you whispered, not daring to look her in the eyes anymore. it felt like everything you did just messed things up even further.Â
âstop saying sorry, you idiotâ she retorted quickly and as your breath hitched with hurt and confusion, her lips were on yours. all the time you had imagined kissing nikki, which was quite a lot, couldnât have prepared you for this kiss. you had always imagined first kisses to be like fireworks, like everything felt exciting and fierce, but this kiss wasnât like that. it wasnât rushed nor desperate. it felt like it was the most natural thing both of you had ever done. it felt like coming home, finding a place to land in. you never had been two peas in a pod but rather like a flower, branching out into the sky, helping each other to grow together. a sense of peace filled your lungs as the air slowly but surely ran out.Â
as all the air actually ran out, you pulled apart. both your heavy breathings melted together by the still close distance between you, forehead against the otherâs. a silence filled the room, and this time it wasnât the one you had before. your insecure thoughts didnât scream your ears out from the inside. they were silent for the first time in a long, long time.Â
nikki was the first to break the silence, to no surprise either. sheâd always been the more talkative person between you. âyou are beautiful enough, y/n. your worth isnât based on what you see in the mirror. itâs based on whatâs in your heart and i know your heart. i know your kindness. i know how youâve always sat by my side, through the good and the bads. how you laugh at my bad jokes, just to make me happy. how you defended me in middle school when they called me âfreaky nikkiâ. how you read my little drafts from my book, complimenting me endlessly, even when i think itâs shitâ her voice, still with that tenderness, but also with a desperation to help you understand. understand what she saw in you, that part of you that you didnât see as clear. and, yes, you knew what she was stating was true. you had always been by her side, just like she had been by yours, but it felt unreal that it mattered to her in the same way it did to you. ânikkiâŠâ you tried to start but your breath fell short. you didnât know what to say or how to say it.Â
âeven if you donât believe that you are the most beautiful person in the world, i do. i see you in a way you donât see yourself. just like you see me in a way iâll never truly be able to comprehend.â
you sniffled once again, as your eyes threatened to tear up again by her sweet words. âyou really mean that?â you asked, just to make yourself believe her, just a little more. you could tell, once again, that it wasnât teasing, light hearted nikki speaking but a raw, emotional side of her taking over.
âi love you, baby. i donât lie to the people i love and you know that.â you couldnât argue with that. sheâd always been quite honest during these twenty or so years youâd known her. she never hesitated to retort when she didnât agree nor lied just to make anyone happy. she was always just herself, voicing it out in a way you never had the courage to.Â
her words always made an impact on you and now that you had let out your inner demons, you just wanted to be held. you wanted to soak up her warmth, her comfort and her sweet nothings, taking it selfishly for yourself.
âcan you hold me?â
she chuckled a little, not in a condescending way, but in an endearing one. âall night if youâd let meâ while talking she laid down in your bed, shamelessly crawling under the sheets and opening her arms to let you into her embrace. you smiled softly at her before curling up in her arms, facing her. her eyes looked into yours with the same softness she had always had, even back when you had fallen off your bike and cried. twenty years didnât make a difference to her essence. of course, she had grown up. her eyes didnât look as big as then, and her mole under her eye had grown a little darker but there was no question. she was still your nikki.
âyou wear my shirt to bed, you weirdo?â she teased you all the sudden, finally making a comment about you wearing her shirt.
you chuckled lightheartedly, finally sounding like yourself again. âwhat? i like it. itâs comfy.â
âyou were mine before we even kissedâ a continuation of her teasing left her lips.
âiâm yours?â
âyouâve always been mine, babyâ
âeven when ianâs cousin and bear try to flirt with you?â
âthey have never mattered in the same way you doâ
