AS THOUGH A STRING is attached to her sternum, her chest rises & falls as her lungs fill with air & then release it all. BREATH is strange - you need it, and you need to be deprived of it, in an endless cycle. In and out, in and out, over and over again. But after a few seconds her breath normalizes, though she can still feel her heart pounding against her ribcage. The overall effect is pleasant - she is tired, but rightfully so. Her muscles ACHE from a strenuous workout, and she knows she’ll be sore in the morning, but it feels good. She feels good.
She presses a hand towel to her forehead, patting her face then moving to her neck, under her chin. She grabs the plastic strap attaching her water bottle to its lid and walks over to her instructor, the towel still pressed to her neck with the opposite hand. She SMILES - the weeks since she’s started taking classes have not only improved her physical health & given her a new skill set that might come in handy considering her line of work, but she’d grown FOND of the woman; Mara admired Mulan’s strength & tenacity, the fire that was evident in the way she taught - Mara could only imagine facing such a woman in a fight.
‘That was good,’ she begins, still a little breathless. She clears her throat and drops the towel onto her shoulder, reaching over to unscrew the cap of her water bottle. ‘I think I’m getting the hang of it,’ she takes a swig of her water & gulps it down. ‘More or less.’
